I hope Cleverly retains his seat otherwise the leadership contenders will come from the crank side of the Tory party.

You mean there is still a side of the Tory party that is not "crank"?

He's far from a big cheerleader for it.

It's government policy (until tomorrow) and Cleverly, like all members of the cabinet, is bound by collective responsibility.

a less weak person would stand up against the policy if he's against it

instead he's agreed to be the home secretary and contributed to the hundreds of thousands of pounds wasted by this government on sending consecutive ministers out there to cheerlead the project

He would have to resign from government of he spoke out against the policy. You know this full well. Not much different than Starmer endorsing Corbyn to be Prime Minister in 2019 and just a few months later kicking him out of the Labour party and deciding he isn't fit to stand as a Labour MP.

Your point was that he was a big cheerleader for the policy. He wasn't.

he did speak out against the policy according to your link.

it's quite possible to refuse to take a job and/or resign from the cabinet to avoid being the poster boy for it!

you know as well as i do that the swivel-eyed loons in the conservative membership would never vote for james cleverly as leader above the likes of truss/braverman/badenoch/farage. his only hope is if the tory party being reduced to one mp! (i could cope with that)

I’ve got a horrible feeling that the Tories and Reform are going to do a lot better than forecasted.

I think you may well be right. In the present climate plenty of people not wanting to admit that they are still tory.

A couple of days age Coffey was 7/2 to win. I thought that was very tempting though I hope she is wiped out.

I will love it, love it, Kevin Keegan style love it if I wake up tomorrow and Andrea Jenkyns is no longer my MP.

And I strongly suspect she won’t be.

Didn't you resign your membership of the Labour party due to his handling of antisemitism?

Yep, and stand by it. But that was a while ago during a very different political landscape. I'm fine with him winning as an independent rather than Labour party leader.
