For all the criticism of England, some justified, these two supposed football powerhouses have dished up a bore fest of epic proportions. Toodle pip Ronaldo indeed though.
We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub.

Contender to be in the Worst XI of the tournament. Actively made Portugal worse, took charge of all their free kicks despite being rubbish at them, missed pretty straightforward chances, lost the ball whenever he tried to run with it etc.
The end of his career has to go down as one of the most undignified of all the greats.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Why are people focusing so much on the free kicks?
Pretty rubbish at them? One of them in the last game went narrowly over the bar at pace, the next was on target and the keeper punched clear, and the next one went over the bar (I think). He was probably their best chance of scoring from one.
Silly narrative that isn't necessary. Not arguing the rest of it though.

Because his record at taking them is awful. He just hits it so hard that when they do go in they look quite spectacular.

There’s definitely something in knowing when it’s your time. He offered them nothing off the ball, which isn’t exactly new news to anyone, but he’s lost that zip. Thought Portugal looked pretty decent until that final 3rd, whether another player would have made a difference in terms of goal scoring I’m not sure but pressing from the front they would have.
Piers Morgan has been pretty silent about him, after telling Ten Hag he was a bad manager because Ronaldo was scoring goals in Saudi. ( not that he’s a relevant football pundit)

How many has he scored in tournaments?
In the last two games he has taken two free kicks in good positions, which had no real chance of being scored, but which could have provided a dangerous delivery. Guess which options he took?

I think the stat was highlighted during the last match. 50 something free kicks in tournaments….One goal.

Regarding any free kick that he takes, he tries for the ultimate net buster that he scored against Pompey at old trafford in 2008... Poor old David James just stood and watched it...
His ego is bigger than his country... Which is a shame for such a brilliant player..

All players reach their use-by date, Messi is the same now. Neither are or have ever been in the top 10 of greatest footballers, but the media have bigged them up.
But what I would say about both is they keep trying to give something to their country, it would have been easier for them to have walked away from international football and retire years ago

It seemed the team was set up to provide him with opportunities. Shame because they have some outstanding players and if they had a worker upfront would have been more effective.

1 from 61.
Ronnie's Juventus record was 1 in 72, so it isn't a case of him just being plagued by bad luck on the international scene either. He hasn't been a good scorer of free kicks for many years, but when they do go in phwoaar.
I'd be interested to read Bloom's top 10 list which misses out both Messi and CR7!

Indeed. Silly to claim they are not up there on most criteria.

Depending on the criteria I reckon it would be possible to pick at least 10 from this list before considering Messi or CR.
Di Stefano Puskas Beckenbauer Charlton, R Best Maradona Pele Zidane Cruyff Ronaldo Iniesta Zico Yashin Muller Garrincha Cafu Rivaldo Baggio, R Matthaus Maldini Moore

I genuinely don't know what your criteria could be for discarding both from any list though, unless it was the more intangibles of personality or 'he couldn't have done that with a pig's bladder'.

No chance.
You can remove baggio maldini mathais rivaldo cafu zico iniesta and yashin from that list instantly.

And how many of those footballers have you watched consistently on telly? Like him or not, Ronaldo performed at the highest level in an era where almost every match was televised. Consistently at the top of his game - maybe not now.
Pele was overrated.

That's the nub of my point (if I had one).
Messi and Ronaldo certainly get the advantage of recency bias. And the regularity with which players from the modern game are now seen also gives them an advantage over players from previous eras when such "all time great" lists are drawn up.
Edit: So who can say Messi is better than, say, Duncan Edwards when there is only limited footage of the latter from which to judge?

Most of those players played in an era of poorer pitches, heavier footballs, tackling allowed and much more besides. You look at the treatment dished out to the likes of George Best and Ronaldo wouldn’t have lasted five minutes. His histrionics and cheating alone would have seen him ‘dealt with’.
I’d have Paul Mariner in my team before show pony Ronaldo any time. Better football, better team player, better bloke. Oh and as hard as nails.
I’m guessing you’ve not watched Pele or some of these truly great players. I don’t see the relevance of tv to your argument.
Regardless, it’s all opinion but even if you want to discard old footballers, you cannot ignore Messi who was a better footballer than Ronaldo all day long.
