Waterbutt Watch. 06:53 - Jul 8 with 4386 views | Benters | Hello good people I hope to find you all healthy and well. How are your waterbutts doing? So far to date I have four 240 litre rammed with Adams Ale as my dear Grandmother called it,one 80 litre waterbutt connected to my main down pipe,I then drain it off into my surplus butts and four 80 litre dustbins full! I had started to use old milk bottles to collect more rain water, but Lady B thought it was a tad odd. In other news Yesterday I saw two Butterflies and a few bumble bees, they seem very slow to start up this year. Then a thunderstorm arrived and that was that.

| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

Waterbutt Watch. on 07:40 - Jul 8 with 2871 views | Dubtractor | It's been a terrible year for butterflies so far. Hopefully there is time for them to recover a bit. Water butt is full to overflowing after the weekend. Think I need to invest in a connected water butt system to maximise the benefit. [Post edited 8 Jul 2024 7:49]

Waterbutt Watch. on 07:43 - Jul 8 with 2851 views | brogansnose | I fitted a waterbutt last year and it hasn't stopped raining since but it does come in handy for watering the house plants as they don't like tapoline.

Yes it has been bad,a cold wet spring and a wet summer is to blame me thinks. In June last year I had completely ran out of rainwater, nothing like that this year. All I do regarding surplus butts is whack a hosepipe on the tap of the full butt and fill my overflow butts like that.

I was on top of a wee hill called Monamenach yesterday and saw a couple of butterflies playing chase (still that time of the year, there's hope for us all yet) right on the summit. Can't tell you what species, I was having a sit down after walking a couple of thousand feet uphill. We have no need of butts on the West coast of Scotland but I can confirm that they have them on the East coast where I was on my way back from.

...and the bees and hoverflies too. I am worried that I'm not getting my tomatoes pollinated this year, although my plums are going great guns.

It’s amazing what difference a day makes,my garden is rammed with plants to attract the wildlife and today when I look out on it there are loads of bees buzzing about.Earlier in the season I did have some miner bees that live in little tunnels in the soil, they are nice to watch.

There are definitely more things flying about this morning in my garden.

Waterbutt Watch. on 09:00 - Jul 8 with 2414 views | IndependentlyBlue | My two waterbutts on the allotment are nicely full. Lots of bees about, but a distinct shortage of butterflies. Usually packed with Cabbage Whites by now but hardly seen any this year yet. Though not a bad thing by itself but just saying. Had horrendous year with slugs this year though, as have most people.

Waterbutt Watch. on 09:23 - Jul 8 with 2291 views | Kievthegreat | My water butt was only put in a couple of months ago as part of the drainage for a log cabin in the garden and it had been going fine. There was always enough to water the plants and always had a decent level left over. Last 2 weeks has seen it full to almost overflowing! Will have to find some additional uses or else I'll have to just run a hose to the main drainage and let it all go. Could do with some nice sunny weather while I'm in such surplus!
