Philogene Latest 12:34 - Jul 12 with 11654 views | portmanking | Starting to get a bit horny again... The Athletic's Villa correspondent, Tanswell, now thinks it's "unlikely" that Philogene will return to Villa Park. Game time is being prioritised for his development with ITFC still in pole position.
Philogene Latest on 12:49 - Jul 12 with 6572 views | portmanking | Another source also suggesting the bidding has reached £27m for Philogene alone now. Credible source usually, but I'm struggling to see how the bidding has escalated? Maybe Villa really were just trying to bump his transfer fee?

The Hull blog yesterday for their local paper suggested that it was a bit higher than 18m. Perhaps top ups could see that amount increase

Well if he costs that much I don’t think he’ll need to worry about game time!

It would certainly be the most dynamic front line we've ever had and maybe the most dynamic in the bottom half of the Premier League?

I think it feels like one of those 'moments'. If we get this one over the line, with the other two, feels like we are starting to make a really strong statement. That will make it easier to get others here too. Everyone wants success here, and if we want to keep McKenna, we have to back him.

Philogene Latest on 12:56 - Jul 12 with 6192 views | burnbudgiesburn | If any of this was credible and Villa are genuinely not interested in buying him, then they appear to have try to change the £40m valuation between the two players from £18m Philogene/£22m Greaves into a £25m/15m split instead.

Heard the same, but there's a world of difference between 18m and 27m! Not quite sure how the price has got that high unless Ipswich have continued to try and outbid Villa to a point where they're giving up and happy to take the 30% sell-on fee?

Sky Sports are saying it is £15m for Greaves so if the £40m + add ons reported before is correct then that isn't far off.

Is there a situation in which the Greaves deal decreases should the Philogene deal have to increase? Clever bit of accounting to put off Villa and Hull still get the double deal they wanted.

If we pay 27m for philogene, that is not over priced that says we have totally lost all perspective as to the guys worth.

£27M seems a very high fee for him. He is good, but he would have to have a hell of a season at that price. Just hope we know what we are doing, otherwise we could end up like others who gambled and lost. I am sure that those that be are happy with all of this, but must admit, as an older fan, these figures worry me slightly. I know that is just the going rate and all that, but still, the amount we are potentially going to spend, makes me a little uneasy.

Respectfully disagree. Both Tanswell and Bardell said he's easily a PL starter, but perhaps not quite at Villa's level right now (top 4/6). Do you really get much change from £25m+ for a mid-table PL star? This is the pond we're now fishing in.

You've got to stop worrying about the fees. We're signing players who, in the worst case scenario, can be sold on to cover losses. That's unlike 2002 when we were forced to pay off most of our higher earners to terminate their contracts i.e. Finidi. [Post edited 12 Jul 2024 13:14]

Yep, we have bought appreciating assets, not depreciating, so in the worst case scenario, we will have saleable assets.

It is a bit of a gamble, but so is any signing. If McKenna can get him performing to his limits on a regular basis, he will be worth £100m

Well look back at some of Hull City games last season and tell me how he is even worth half of that.. we paid 18m for Hutchinson, who is in a totally different league on last seasons performances

How would matching rights allow a team to alter a player's valuation? Is it by offering the player much better personal terms, and advising us that they'll remove or reduce the offer if we increase our own transfer bid? Villa's bluff contract would need to be real and meet their valuation of the player though, in the event we keep to our original bid and accept losing out.

You realise Philogene scored and assisted more than Hutchinson last season, right?
