One area left to strengthen. 11:51 - Jul 18 with 3599 viewsGeoffSentence

The front four have been strengthened with the signings of Hutch and Delap. The back five with Greaves, Johnson and Muric. It's just the middle two that have not seen any work yet. Got to imagine that there will be someone in the pipelin to help out Morsy and Luongo.

None of the above means I think we have finished with the front four or back five, sure there will be more incmings there too, just that we haven't started work on DCM yet.

Think for first 11 we need LW/LAM and CM and depends where Hutch plays but likely a CAM too if he’s out right.

Then can see another CM and LB as back ups.

I imagine we'll look towards another 5-6 players.

Quite possibly 2 keepers, with Slicker out on loan, and if Walton wants first team football.
Back up left back (maybe someone who can cover the whole back 4 if needed)
Centre mid, could even argue we may need 2 there as well.

Think it's a very tricky position to recruit for. We ask a lot from CM and in the Prem even if you're not *quite* up to the level you can get overrun very easily. I like Sheaf but I think if he were first choice we'd have heard a bit more by now about making a serious play for him. Reckon we're still testing the water a bit with who we can get in.

Given that we were prepped to spend almost £20 mil on a LW I imagine we're seeing that as a bit of a priority position as well.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Don’t forget we have signed David Martin in a player-coach role to be 3rd choice to allow Slicker to go on loan, so only 1 more gk needed max. But otherwise agree.

I don't think Martin is a player-coach, certainly not from the official announcement a couple weeks back. Of course, there's every chance we could register him in an emergency though.

"Meanwhile, David Martin has joined Town in a role that will see him assist Head of Goalkeeping Rene Gilmartin in supporting goalkeeper development throughout the Academy pathway.

David, who has represented MK Dons, West Ham United, Southend United and other clubs between the sticks during his career, will also help with training, scouting and recruitment, and monitoring the Club’s shot-stoppers who are on loan at other clubs.

A former teammate of new signing Ben Johnson at London Stadium, David will be a positive presence around Playford Road and will train with the first-team group when required."

Bang on. Could make a good argument we need 3 in CM. Imagine one of them will be that Yank we have been linked with. Not sure I fancy Taylor up against Prem teams.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Almost certainly our weakest area. The apparent chase of Downes suggests its an area we're looking to strengthen, it'll be interesting to see who we get in.

True. It’s this Stuart Watson article that says differently, although I don’t currently have access to see the article…

Disagree, plenty more to do.

Left midfield, CDM and then LB and GK cover and possibly one more up top.

Not 1 but min 4 could be 5-6

LWB,
CM x 2,
a 10/LW,
perhaps a Striker

GK if Walton ends up moving to get games.

I think we need two CMs and one of them needs to have some proven pedigree at PL level and/or genuine PL physicality - arguably be our most important signing of the window as many games will be won/lost on the midfield battle.

Expect we will see a £15m-£20m signing and another on a free/loan.

Yeah, need to be a bit of a physical demon to be a Prem midfielder but for us I guess it's tricky as the sort of players we'd want would happily be taken by more established clubs. Seen a few shouts for Ugochukwu on loan which I think would be good as one player in there.

Wouldn't be surprised if we look abroad for someone who fits the bill - seems we're interested in this Yank from Italy but would be another loan and as you say think we'd want to spend a decent fee getting someone in who's ours to keep, as evidenced by the Downes chase.

Depending on how many keepers required I'd say about 6 to 8 more to come. Also if players go out on loan or sold it could be even more.

Think we're going to need two CMs minimum.

Morsy and Luongo are not getting any younger and we don't yet know whether they'll adapt to the pace of the Premier League. And even if they can, they won't both last a whole season.

Taylor showed flashes but couldn't nail down a starting spot in the Championship, and in any case seems more effective when played further forward.

It's definitely our weakest area right now, which shows how quickly things can change because it's arguably been our strongest over the last two years.

What's wrong with Taylor? Surely he would be able to do a decent job in midfield, can certainly get stuck in and can score a goal or two

Humpheys need to go out on loan or sell.

Not good enough for top flight football imho!

There's nothing wrong with him, but given he never fully claimed a starting spot in the Championship there's got to be a question mark over how well he'll adapt to the Premier League.

We started last season with Evans, Ball and El Miz in the squad; regardless of how few minutes they played for us over the past couple of seasons, they were still occupying a space in the squad (and collecting a wage), other than Travis coming in on loan, no recent recruitment in that area so probably fair to say we'll bring (at least) a couple CMs in...
