Wooooo Like some kinda Pleasurewood Hills V Atlas Park super theme park?

Think Alton towers on the seafront.

Casino’s, strip joints, music shows, big hotels. Wouldn’t surprise me if Clacton is the capital of England by the time he’s finished his stint there.

I don't think Maitlis quite hits the mark, here.

It would have been better to put his record of absenteeism from European Parliament committees to him, and ask him if he is serious about being an MP and the difficult work of Constituency representation, or whether he is just interested in crowds and photo opportunities.

Spot on Mr Moorhen

I think his disdain for hard work and his fast 'n' loose approach to expenses/party accounts are his 2 weakest points

I would be delighted if he were to be questioned relentlessly on these points rather than indulged and simpered over by journalists

Mind you, he would doubtless still get rakes of votes from his worshippers

It’s worrying enough that people actually listen to that waste of oxygen. But it’s truly staggering that people actually voted fo it.

There’s a serious case for those individuals (all traceable) being disenfranchised. You can’t give the vote to people like that.

Have you been to Clacton? Its not truly staggering at all.

In Clacton's case, I expect it's because a lot of them are desperate and feel let down by their lot and just want change. The demographics of the place are frightening:
- double the average rate of economically inactive 16-64 year olds
- employment rate well below average
- number of 16-64 year olds with no qualifications is well above average
- similarly, adults with A-level or equivalent qualifications is well down on average
- crime significantly higher than average
- number of shops/facilities well down on average

People like Farage offer a life raft, even if it's one based on lies and empty promises. Let's face it, the past systems haven't worked for them. The anti-foreigner rhetoric obviously makes no sense either - foreigners have nothing to do with Clacton's decline. It's one of the least diverse places in the country, with low numbers of BAME people and low numbers of white foreigners. But again, logic doesn't come into it when people are desperate and feel as though 'normal' is against them.

It's been left behind following the collapse of the seaside tourism, lack of internal investment and probably some local cock-ups in planning and local governance. Poor, desperate, poorly educated people are fertile ground for populists unfortunately.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?
