Thinking of Moving to Ipswich 15:37 - Jul 29 with 4132 viewsCustardCream

Aside from the town centre and Portman Road my knowledge of Ipswich and the surrounding areas is minimal. Just looking to see if anyone has any advice on areas to avoid

Simple, don't move into 'Ipswich'. Some lovely places just on the outskirts . Most people who have been here for life avoid the town center if at all possible. If the Mrs wants to go shopping we head for Bury or (whisper it) Norwich.

I am not local these days though I grew up in Suffolk. Have often considered moving back that way at some point and if I was there is no way in h3ll I would live in Ipswich. Suffolk is blessed with some beautiful places, some amazing countryside. Much better places to live where you can go into Ipswich for the football etc.

I went to school in Ipswich and nowadays its an absolute shell of a town that it once was. No vibrancy, no life. I walked through the town center a few years ago with my mother and my then 7 yo daughter and I was struck about how it felt a little unsafe. Dark, crap lighting, no life and people just hanging around doing nowt.

If I was to return I would head deeper into Suffolk, Essex/Suffolk border, Woodbridge or BSE.

That's pretty much every town and city up and down the country unfortunately, it's not unique to Ipswich.

I was brought up in east Ipswich - IP3 area and it’s mostly quite nice and that goes for a lot of the other areas of the town. You get rundown areas in all heavily urbanised towns or cities.

It gets a bad press from a lot that live in the countryside or the smaller towns of Suffolk which is quite strange as there’s not a lot to do in those places. However, Ipswich compares fairly well to other similar sized towns.

The town centre has seen better days but I think that there are plans to improve it.

It’s not the greatest of towns but it’s definitely better than a lot of other 100k-160k towns.

Edit. If the town was a football club then it’ll be lower end championship.

Where are you moving from?

Personally I would say North and East if you're going to be within a few miles of the centre. If you're not then there's nice areas in all directions.

Yes very strange are the ways of Suffolk. I went to school in Ipswich but it's not until more recently that I've realised how many of the inhabitants of the minor towns situated around the county can't wait to tell you how they don't like Ipswich and don't want or need to go there. Good for them.

Most other counties talk up the major town / city but not here. It is ironic how these same people are happy to venture in from the dizzy heights of Woodbridge, BSE and even Kesgrave (yes they class themselves as not being in Ipswich when it pretty much is) when it suits them such as for watching ITFC.

Don't think you'll change them but yes, for what it's worth I think Ipswich is actually quite a nice area to live particularly the areas around Christchurch park. Town centre shopping is a bit rubbish but in fairness it always has been. Hopefully it gets repurposed with some of this town centre funding that's become available.

depends on how close you want to be. I'm in Suffolk, not overly far from Ipswich between Bury and Sudbury, lovely down this way and easy to get to Ipswich for the games..
but it is village life and not for everyone.

Good luck trying to find a modest size house in Woodbridge or BSE for less than Argentina's current deficit.

Sadly, you are right. Many towns in particular have been allowed to run down into cesspits. But there are many worse than Ipswich. It’s really not that bad. There are some decent areas. The NW/W side is ok.

Now for a real town of turds I recommend Blackpool. Went there for a few days this time last year to watch cricket. There wasn’t one single element to it that was any good. The best bits were very run down, the worst bits - sort of scenes from Terminator when the robots were on top.

The reason I don't "talk up" Ipswich as the town is because the surrounding area is much nicer than the town itself. People may only come to the town to watch ITFC but that's because it's one of the few things that is worth venturing in for.

It's not a patch on what it used to be, the town centre is dead. Which is a shame as when I was growing up it was a much more vibrant place to be.

Agreed the areas around Christchurch Park are lovely, I used to live in that part of the world. I am not saying that there aren't nice areas, it's just suffering from what a lot of towns suffer from these days.

I always looked the US and saw their strip malls and their scattered random shops around their smaller towns and cities and used to wonder how they could live without a proper centre. Nowadays we are heading the same way.

It's been a long time since I lived in Ipswich. I lived in what I would call an upper working class area on a street called Back Hamlet about 1/2 a mile south-east of the town centre not far from the docks. The richest areas were on the eastern edge of the town and the middle class areas to the north-east. The only less than desirable area in the east of the town I knew of was The Nacton Estate along The Foxhall Road. Other places to avoid were part of London Road about 1/4 a mile north of Portland Road, the large Castle Hill estate on the north west edge of town and the huge Chantry Estate to the west/south west of the town.

It does. I think it has to do with Ipswich being somewhat isolated from other large towns/cities. Where I live there are middle sized/large towns and cities every few miles.

I moved to Kesgrave about 9 years ago. The locals hate it when I refer to it as an estate in east Ipswich!

When I first moved to The East Midlands I lived in a place called West Bridgford about a mile away from Nottingham City Centre and a stones throw from The City Ground. I made the mistake of telling my neighbour that this seemed a nice part of city. He corrected me telling me we were not in Nottingham. I told him Forest play a couple of streets away. It turns out The City Ground is not in Nottingham either. At that time I worked as a temp for Directory Inquiries and the when a snobbier person asked for a number in somewhere such as Harrow or Kingston upon Thames they insisted they were not in London insisting they were in Middlesex and Surrey.

The general advice of North & East beats South & West is pretty good.
So much depends on your budget... but also, just how close to the centre you want to be.
Town has some really decent pubs, restaurants, theatres incl the Regent & New Wolsey plus other smaller options. Shopping is far better than many claim, unless you want to find the big chains; there are some very good independent businesses.

Budget over 750k, I'd look around Christchurch Park and the roads heading north around there. Budget under 300k, or lower,, I'd check out the areas off Woodbridge Road / Spring Road within a mile of town.

I'm further out east, still within the urban area, but my last bus is 6pm, which is an utter ballache.

I was lucky enough to grow up around the Christchurch park area, and often visit my parents who are still there. It is one of the few areas I'd still consider living - there or the waterfront.

For what it's worth, I moved to a new build eastate just outside Colchester at end of last year. While Colchester is by no means perfect, since it's got city status I find the city to be thriving and would highly recommend it. Only half an hour drive or a fast train to Ipswich.
