Szmodics 17:34 - Jul 31 with 3739 views | Zx1988 | Seeing the article about him having had 'showdown talks' with Blackburn today, is there any particular reason why he hasn't submitted a transfer request to try and force things through? Maybe he's hoping to cash in a loyalty clause in his contract? Or is it just that it wouldn't serve to change much in the grand scheme of things?

We know they have to sell. They will play games for as long as we continue to accommodate them. You make what you believe is a fair offer. You set a deadline. If they can't make a decision by that point, you pull the offer and move on.

Quick, someone give Ashton a call and tell him how to do transfer negations!

Glad you are not in charge of things. Football is a different beast to what you may have experienced in your working life. Sometimes, you just have to be patient and bide your time. We are probably still below what they discussed as a final price, so nothing to see here.

Our first offer was a low ball offer. We appear to have done exactly what you're suggesting with the latest offer.

Blackburn are terrible on and off the pitch. Seems to me SS was their golden goose and they think they deserve far more for him. Denying him a move to the Prem simply won’t work, and we can look elsewhere so really they are trying to up the price from a position of weakness. I’d heard it was all done ages ago, told to expect it to be announced yesterday, but obviously that hasn’t happened/wasn’t true/ Blackburn are playing silly bvggers.

Even if Leeds are interested, he isn't interested in going there. I am surprised it has taken this long for him to kick off (assuming he has).

You aren't understanding. It's taking a long time because Ashton has encouraged it. They strung us along with Gallagher. We came back with increased bids. He reportedly did this with the Greek striker as well. Everyone knows the situation. They have to sell. The market is not robust and we are his preferred destination, yet we are still playing this game. And we will play this game every time we go in for a Blackburn player (which seems to be happening entirely too often). We should have an abundance of potential targets. They have how many potential buyers for Szmodics? We should be in the position of strength. This is especially true if the proceedings were indeed initiated by Szmodics' agent. It's game theory. You can't leave it open-ended. It's the primary reason there are transfer deadlines. If there weren't, these things could drag on indefinitely. Withdrawing an offer doesn't mean you are no longer interested. It's a means of avoiding relinquishing control to the other party. What they set as the price is entirely inconsequential with regards to our valuation. If the two don't intersect somewhere, then the deal should not happen. You do not identify the target and then proceed to figure out how to make it happen unless you have unlimited resources, which we do not. Every player's value is relative to the outlay required to acquire them.

Everything points to us doing the opposite of what you say. We are sticking at a price point. We don't need to pull it. We got early business done. He's a player we like and want but we're happy to walk away rather than overpay. Why pull the offer and walk away when we need a couple of forward players still. You think we aren't active with others and it's one at a time? We'll walk away if we get 2 others we are happy with. Blackburn know this and it puts pressure ein them also. It isn't easy to just get every player you want. We probably paid a bit over to get some in early. Now we are in the more hardball negotiations and need to meet a budget.
