So we should respect the armed services then? 17:20 - Aug 2 with 7680 viewsfactual_blue

What this woman had to suffer is disgusting. I wouldn't be surprised if her former colleagues were at Southport the other night.

As further evidence, a friend's son is a trained and skilled MOD civilian mechanic. He was based in one of the army bases out there.

As his parents said, he went out an normal, decent lad and came back a racist.

Some years ago he went on a tour of duty in Afganistan

Why pick on one case? I myself served with ethnic minority soldiers and indeed trusted my life with them on more than one occasion!

Horrible for that poor women, and the rest of the decent members of the armed forces, who will no doubt be tarnished with the same brush.

The armed forces are a reflection of society. You can't tar the entire service with the same brush because there are vile racists in their ranks. Just as you can't tar the NHS with the same brush as murderers because of people like Beverley Allitt and Lucy Letby or the BBC as paedophiles because of "Huw", Saville etc.

I wanted to write something similar, couldn’t be arsed with possibly be called out as a racist or something similar. No need to drag the whole armed forces through the mud because of tragic idiots like those in the article, let’s hope They get thrown out.

Indeed. What this woman went through is disgusting. She is entitled to every enny she received in damages and I hope they come down hard on the knuckledraggers who made her life a misery.

Yes, we should respect the military. And the police. These people do hard, sometimes appalling, difficult, dangerous work and are what we have between us and people who are evil beyond your wildest dreams.

They should be supported. There are wrong uns in all walks of life. It’s not a unique thing. The trick is to try and keep improving things, educate, weed out if necessary etc. A broad sarcastic statement like ‘so we should respect the armed services then’ is wrong and unhelpful.

As it goes, thanks to decades of under investment and neglect the military is shrinking before your eyes anyway. I’ve heard that it would be hard to put two divisions in the field and actually there’s no means of transporting them anyway. Can’t see Labour doing anything about it.

Let’s hope so.

Institutional racism has been proven to be rife in our police force repeatedly over a period of decades. It’s deeply embedded. I’m not sure I share your confidence that the same conditions don’t exist in our armed forces. I hope your values are prevalent but I think the OP has every right to be curious.

Agreed, it all starts off with the few bad apples claim, and then we find out it's a whole lot more than just a few. The Met admitted it was institutionalised in the police and from this tragic case it's right to ask if the armed forces share similar problems.

Funny how nobody has responded to someone who has served. They're all experts though.

It's no shock that racism exists in the forces. Young, mostly white, men from working class backgrounds and often poorly educated, is the target demographic. It just mirrors society.

As a whole we should as should we the police. Sadly the forces like the police have units ran by a-holes. From experience I can tell you that the attitude of the commanding officer who is lieutenant colonel, and the RSM who is a warrant officer class 1 reflects on the behaviour of the unit. The CO is responsible for keeping the officers in line and the RSM the other ranks. If these two people are EDL and "It's a man's army "types or generally do not give a damn and there is a minority who are you get incidents like this. They will not be to ones who will be disciplined though. The Army finds the lowest rank possible who has any responsibility to carry the can. There is proof of this with The Bloody Sunday prosecutions. Yo don't hear of Major X or Sergeant Major X being charged, you hear of Solider X.

I would like to see you in action on the streets of Sunderland last night and how well you would cope with bricks, bottles and other items being hurled at you by groups of drunken thugs when you make your pompous, elitist remarks on here. You should be ashamed of yourself FB.

The target demographic is whoever walks through the door to sign on! Mostly young white men you say ,this country is still mostly white so that’s not really a surprise is it? The vast majority of soldiers quickly realise it doesn’t matter on the colour of the blokes skin if he has to have your back and you his!
