Genuinely I'm not. Might be a bit of nose cutting to spite my face but as a matter of principle I would honestly just give Blackburn the big feck you and never deal with them again. Also its Szmodics, he's a good player don't get me wrong, but in what world is he worth close to £10m. Blows my might how quickly we've all become desensitised to that sort of fee.

This is it though - if we spent £9m on someone who had scored half the goals Szmodics did in some European league that was no stronger than the Championship, people would probably be excited.
I think some of the numbers now are crazy but it seems to be the market we are in and you kind of have to desensitise yourself to it. Yaser Asprilla is off to Rennes for £25m after scoring 7 goals/9 assists in 81 Championship games. We paid £15m rising to £20m for Delap, 12 goals and 2 assists in 68 Championship games. People will say 'potential' but these are players that were far less effective and influential than Szmodics. | | | |

I don't disagree with your point, its as much a reflection of the market. My nervousness with Szmodics is that he's done it once in a career that has been spent in L2, L1 and the Championship. His 3 seasons of Championship football saw a return of 6 in 36, 5 in 34 and last seasons 27 in 44. I'm not normally one for stats like that, I prefer the eyeball test and he's no doubt a good player at that level, he certainly looked it last season and has real pace and energy, clever movement and can finish. I just wonder if he's come off the back of a purple patch that's an exception rather than the rule. No shame in those numbers being an exception, nobody will expect that again, but the norms that proceeded it never looked anything more than a decent, middling championship player to me. Not the sort of player I would expect us to part with 8 figures for or anything close to it.
Some deals are exciting enough where they're worth the pain of the negotiation. Philogene for example, the juice was worth the squeeze, if we landed him it would've been amazing. Szmodics I can take it or leave it, at £6m its a punt. At £10m its a no thank you and a "feck off Rovers" for me. | | | |

The only other thing to say - as per Phil's stories - is that he's one we've been after for 2-3 transfer windows now, so clearly a long term target, and much like the majority of our business in the past, has been with the view that players can step through the leagues with us.
Clearly one McKenna feels that can do that, and now we're relatively flush with cash, a deal worth doing at around £9m.
FWIW, I think he suits the way we play down to a absolute tee and can see him being a real asset in the Prem. Nobody will care in 12 months time that he's 29 (nearly 30) if he's contributed enough goals and assists to help keep us in the League and earn us another £100m+ for another season in the Prem. | |

I wouldn't expect McKenna and Ashton to follow that approach, hence why they're doing the job and I'm not.
That said, it IS way more fun on football manager to sign a young Brazilian lad from Gremio with all the potential to become the next R9, rather than sniff around the likes of Szmodics. I want to see a little Spanish lad we've never heard of sat on our bench in his tracksuit being readied to come on against Fulham. | | | |
