Saturday 14:59 - Sep 12 with 4071 views | victorysquad | I remember going to the Goldstone ground, where the crowd was 8,000 and we probably had 1,000 of that. We have had to watch clubs like Brighton, Bournemouth, Brentford, be far more successful than we have in the last 20 years, and it has been frustrating to watch. I don't know why, but watching these teams do so well has just highlighted how badly we have done during that period, especially as we really should have had much better resources than these clubs. They are confident, they think they have got a fairly easy 3 points, we need to disrupt that plan and take the initiative ourselves. We need to be ready for an early onslaught as they are going to try and build momentum early doors. I want us to go down there and smash them, make a real statement win. Lets make ourselves heard.

Err, have a look at the ownership models and compare them to us pre-Gamechanger before making daft statements like that. Brentford and Brighton have achieved success by being generally well-run clubs who have used the money they spent well.

I'm sure someone will know. Found it. 12 October 1991 Brighton & Hove AlbionA 2–2 9,010 Milton, Dozzell [Post edited 12 Sep 2024 15:18]

I know how they have done it, and don’t dispute they are well run clubs, but if you remember the goldstone days, it seems to exacerbate our abject failure the past 2 decades. We will improve each week, but i want is to make our mark on this league as quickly as possible. We did well against Fulham, but it would be great if we can improve again Saturday.

One of my first away matches. An enjoyable game on which was a lovely afternoon on a crumbling terrace.

Did you ever watch Brighton v Town at the Withdean? We all used to feel sorry for B&HA in those days..

Saturday on 16:11 - Sep 12 with 3700 views | Blue_Balls | I remember watching Sudbury Town at the Goldstone ground in an early FA Cup round back I the late 90s. Amzing how far they've come since those and the Withdean days. For me their achievements eclipse that of Bournmouth and Brentford given how far they fell and where they are now.

What a god-awful place to watch football that was. And we only had to go once a season. Poor Brighton had to play there all the time. But at least they didn't have to travel to Gillingham any more. I don't begrudge Brighton anything. They deserve their success, as do their die-hard fans. My favourite (non-athletics) Withdean memory is taking my daughter to her first Town game there. A friendly. I think we won 3-2. Garvan looked good that day. [Post edited 12 Sep 2024 16:24]

Saturday on 19:21 - Sep 12 with 3464 views | Churchman | Went to the Goldstone twice in I think 1979 - we were awful and lost 2-0. And again I think in 1982 - we were awful and drew 1-1. The ground was all broken bricks and decrepit. Amazing how low Brighton went and how they’ve recovered. A real rags to riches story and their supporters have every right to enjoy these times. I’ll never forget that last game of the season in 92 when we’d won the second division and they were going down. They wore white and pink/reddish splodge toothpaste kit with Nobo written on the front. ‘Poor b’stards, forever doomed’ thought I. How wrong can you be. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Went a couple of times, never went to the Goldstone sadly. The stand they put away fans was a temporary one and it never felt all that safe tbh The locals hated it too, given was in a posh suburb not used to hosting footie fans.

Wonder what they think of the new one being in Falmer!

They were miles adrift and hadn’t won for 20 matches or something. Was the last season under Bobby F and first ever play offs when we lost to Charlton

We played at Withdean just days following their successful application to build their new ground at Falmer. A free glass of champagne for all.
Saturday on 20:49 - Sep 12 with 3074 views | tractorshark | Loved the quirkiness of the Goldstone. Started off standing in the corner with a great big floodlight in the middle of the away end and then, in later years, the away fans were further down the slope on the side. Living only about 20 miles away, that was the venue where I saw Ipswich live for the first time. 1982, 1-1 draw, Eric Gates scored. Saw Ipswich quite frequently there after that. One of the most memorable games was 1989 or certainly memorable for me. It was September and I was in awe of that beautiful orange away kit, which we had just released. Game was pretty uneventful until Craig Forrest got injured and midfielder David Hill went in goal. Did all right until he dropped a cross which Ray Wilkins' brother Dean scored from.

Was plentiful too, wasn't just one glass you could go back for more.

They won 2-1 in the last minute to put them in the POs, Kiwomya missed a penalty and Phil Parkes played in goal for us. Also went to the Withdean for the last game of the season in 2005 - a win for us and results going our way would have secured automatic promotion. We drew. Had hospitality tickets and sat on the same table as Dick Knight (their chairman) for the pre-match Sunday brunch, and met Norman Cook, Des Lynam and Jimmy Hill.

I was there twice in 3 months? I went last away game of 81-82, and think it was the first away game 82-83? Skirmishes in the park at back of away corner!

Watched that game in a bar in Barcelona. It clashed with Spanish GP they put the football on one screen without commentary, did reserve a table for us. Which was nice.. Annoyingly the English barman was a Nodge supporter and just for us he wore his Norwich top.

I was at the same game. Memories for me were the orange kit and dandelions growing through the terraces.

I went to that; my one and only visit. On the train from Newcastle as there was deal for young person’s rail cards that month. Think the train ticket cost £12 or close to.
