If it were just McDonnell, it wouldn't be an issue. But it is not.

The comments below the line in the Guardian have overwhelmingly condemned what has gone on, and even centrists in the paper like John Crace and Marina Hyde have mirrored what McDonnell said.

The problem is that Starmer promised higher standards than the Tories, and many on the left like me expected the same.

And things like this are having a real impact which is worrying this early in a government.

"The problem is that Starmer promised higher standards than the Tories, and many on the left like me expected the same."

This for me is it. Whilst I didn't vote for Labour, I had hoped they would set a new standard following the last incumbent's sticky fingers in many pies. Sadly they seem to be falling into the same trap as previous lots. Greed greed greed.

I find it incredibly hard even to fathom how Starmer thought accepting these gifts was a good idea, especially when he consistently berated the Tories in similar situations.

My concern is didn’t any of them appreciate the optics of this, coming off the back of successive governments - particularly Johnson’s - which were mired in sleaze, scandal and mutual back scratching? No one, particularly Starmer himself, didn’t stop for one moment and think it’d be better to say no? They are supposed to be making major decisions to get the country back on it’s feet but they can’t even reach the right solution to the simplest of conundrums.

Exactly this

The country was willing the new govt. to be a complete break from the greed and sleaze of the past 14 years

Why did no one think of how this would look to the average voter, or indeed the pensioner who really really depends on their Winter Fuel Allowance

It seems such a rookie error, a completely avoidable blunder that has squandered so much goodwill..... and given Tories the chance of a free hit at goal....and all for a few garments and a freebie ticket to watch the Arse

In fairness to Starmer, he has said that he, his wife, Rachael Reeves and Angela Rayner will no longer accept free clothes as donations moving forward.

I'm sure the public is in awe of them making this sacrifice.

Since 2019 starmer has allegedly been bunged circa GBP107,000.

A figure that I believe is not disputed.

It seems not just clothes and football tickets;)

i'll defend him for receiving donations towards campaign costs - and i included clothing within that. it would have been much better as a donation to the party with the party then funding his and his wife's campaign related clothes. but i'm a bit taken aback by him receiving £40,000 in free football tickets - that's not a good look.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

How dare you. Their parents single handedly won the war, which means they won the war. They deserve everything we can give them. How dare Liebour take away a benefit that the party they voted for virulently opposed when it was introduced.

The left of the Labour are a bunch of losers who would prefer to be in opposition holding meaningless fringe meetings than holding power.

You can't blame the left for all the mishaps these last few weeks, they're all self-inflicted.

And this is the impact.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/sep/21/honeymoon-over-keir-starmer-now

Keir Starmer now less popular than Rishi Sunak, poll suggests

Opinium poll for the Observer finds a 45-point drop in the prime minister’s approval rating since he won the election

Keir Starmer has suffered a precipitous fall in his personal ratings since winning the election, according to a new poll for the Observer that comes before his first Labour conference as prime minister.

The latest Opinium poll reveals that Starmer’s approval rating has plunged below that of the Tory leader Rishi Sunak, suffering a huge 45-point drop since July. While 24% of voters approve of the job he is doing, 50% disapprove, giving him a net rating of -26%. Sunak’s net rating is one point better.

This article is also illuminating.

A bung is a bung, doesn’t matter how big or how small, it’s still a bung.

Yes, it's the principle that counts not the amount, but under Starmer, with so many changes of policy, it has been difficult to discern what their principles are, apart from getting elected.

It's all above board and legal, and has been going on since time immemorial, across all political parties, and indeed the corporate world.

Given that the right wing press is desperately trying to dig up some dirt on Labour, we should be delighted that this - perfectly legal and normal gifts - is all they could find, because it's a world away from Tory corruption.

There's an argument that it shouldn't be allowed... but it is allowed, and I didn't see you complaining when the Tories were getting the most gifts. Funny that.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

That would not have been true of my parents-in-law, and is not now true of my mother-in-law, being just above the pension credit limit, fearful of heating their home and relying on us to help them get by generally, and also when it came to installing things like a (costly) stair lift, which they couldn't afford but could get no help for.

The means test cut-off should have been much higher, and if this could not be done, they should not have proceeded at all.

A single pension earning over £218.50 a week is not entitled to pension credit but that is barely £10,000 a year, a shockingly low figure for the cut-off.

I try to avoid right wing press, I'm more of a bleeding-heart Guardian kinda guy

I would argue that the cut-off threshold for WFA is too low, that the withdrawl of non means tested universitality is bad politics and that the amount saved by the Exchequer will be tiny if this cut results in greater uptake in Pension Credits

If it had to be cut, then surely a taper over 3 years would lessen the impact

Poor optics...very clumsy and frankly disappointing

After 14 years of performative cruelty and personal self-enrichment....I was hoping for something a bit better

Wrong, some of the bungs were not declared.

Blaming the right wing press is convenient for you, but when the labour movement are dissatisfied by it, that puts you on very shaky ground.

You are the only person on this thread that is blindly defending him.
