Venice on 08:00 - Oct 3 with 2802 views | WeWereZombies | Not been for a while but I think it is like most of the overrun tourist destinations at the moment, best enjoyed in the early morning or evening when the daytrippers have gone. A walk, maybe from the book WestStander recommended, that includes the Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs first thing before a relaxed breakfast and then the lesser travelled back streets and canals until later on.

Venice on 08:17 - Oct 3 with 2749 views | Pinewoodblue | If you are going in winter months check the tides and consider taking your wellies. Have, in the past, paddled in St Marks Square and walked along boards in side streets to get to hotel . November is probably the worst month but can happen anytime between October - March.

Venice on 08:29 - Oct 3 with 2729 views | Churchman | It’s a fantastic place so enjoy. It’s living history. I haven’t been for many years so I’ll leave the advice to others. When I went, we had our own little old guide book and walked it. We didn’t have the money for a gondola and they looked a bit of a waste of time - especially when it hammered down with rain and they were huddled under the Rialto bridge with a lot of disgruntled faces. Lots to see.
Venice on 08:48 - Oct 3 with 2677 views | itfcjoe | Amazing place, just walk everywhere and stumble across things in the main as you'll see everything worth hunting out that way. There is a luxury shopping mall called Fondaco dei Tedeschi, which has an amazing view from the rooftop terrace - but you can only go on to the roof there if you book an appointment, it's free but need to book ahead. Right by the Rialto Bridge. Find hidden places, and eat beautiful food and drink Aperol Spritz there whilst watching the world go by

This. Also worth wandering around some of the less touristy areas of the city (e.g. the north coast).

Venice on 10:00 - Oct 3 with 2456 views | JakeITFC | Copied my thoughts from a previous thread on Venice: - Try and see St Mark's square by night (11pm onwards) when it is really empty. The cathedral, palace and towers are beautiful when lit up and it's very nice to be there when not boiling hot and crowded with people taking selfies. - There are loads of cafes around St Mark's square which are beautiful and have live classical music, but if you sit down and get waiter service it's probably as expensive as anywhere in the world (€18 or so for a bottle of beer). However, if you go inside to the bar in these cafes and order there it is a fraction of the price - you have to stand (can go outside) but is still a nice thing to do pre-dinner to enjoy the location and the music. - Suso for the best ice cream (loads of locations, usually a queue), Farini for the best takeaway pizza, Dal Moro for the best takeaway pasta. I think it's a great city for food on the go, but obviously there are tonnes of brilliant sit down restaurants too. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Venice on 10:12 - Oct 3 with 2422 views | Reus30 | Throw yourself into the culture. We did a moving opera and the Vivaldi concert and both were just awesome. Getyourguide and groupon is your friend. Take your time to find authentic places to eat. Quite a lot of eateries that have all the language boards etc - avoid! Drink aperol spritz all day long. Beautiful place, spent 3 days during carnival so it was rammed but just got stuck in with the walking guides etc. Such a fascinating place. Keep an eye on your pockets (not as bad as elsewhere in Italy mind).
Venice on 12:49 - Oct 3 with 2249 views | ElephantintheRoom | Birmingham has 4x as many canals as Venice. Better curries too. At this time of year I’d be tempted to go to the Venice of the north…. Bruges

Agree early morning or after dinner visit is best to avoid the crowds.

It is magical as soon as the daytrippers have left for the evening. To reiterate other advice, don't eat in a fancy place on a big public square. Just turn off that big square down an alleyway, then turn down another alleyway and you find somewhere better at a fraction of the price. It is a wonderful place. See if you dare find your way around without using your phone, the old-fashioned way - you'll get horribly lost but will find things you'd be glad you hadn't missed.

Much easier to not need to rely on GPS if hotel is near the Rialto Bridge as every sign points you back to where you need to go!

You've missed having your credit card rinsed. Some work colleagues paid about £90 for 4 or 5 drinks there. This was in about 1985.
