Smoking in SBR Lower toilets 12:16 - Oct 7 with 5207 viewsmickymills

Has anybody else noticed that this has gone from being a nuisance ie people queuing up to smoke in the cubicle; to being rife.
At the Villa game, many fans simply stood in the middle of the mens toilet area openly smoking.
I consider myself to be fairly tolerant of most things, but I don't want to breathe in others' smoke and the ceilings are very low in there.
I've spoken to stewards, but they don't seem to be interested in what would obviously be a confrontation.

Given the constrained access to those toilets as well, it's increasingly difficult to use at half-time. Just more entitled, dickish behaviour from some fans.

Not sure they’re going in the cubicle to smoke, or piss for that matter…

It’s also illegal, a compromise to fan safety and down right disrespectful especially to our younger fans who have to breathe in other people’s smoke or vape cloud.
I’d by pass the stewards to be honest and inform the club directly.

….I saw 2 Ipswich lads in our queue get stopped in the way in, but at half time there was still more people queuing up for a dump than was queuing for a piss.

Must be a bug going round I guess.

Always said it and never understood why it’s not been done but don’t know why the doors can’t be opened and have a cordoned off area outside for people to smoke/drink outside in plenty of space which would relieve the concourse area as well.

It happens at loads of grounds up and down the country.

You should write to the club, they may genuinely be unaware.

Won't be a popular opinion, but if you treat people unreasonably, then they'll behave unreasonably. Smokers just need a little corner set aside in an outdoor area - no more problem.

If Norwich don't go up this season, then they'll probably let you have a smoke under that old stand....

I'd second this.

Your belief that the stewards don't want to deal with the confrontation/aggro is also a little concerning. Their primary job is to deal with challenging behaviour and, as a result, risk ending up in confrontational situations. If they are too worried about confrontation to do their job, surely there's an argument that they're not cut out to be stewards?

Would you want to confront a load of Boozed/Coked up fans for having a smoke for a tenner an hour?

I agree with you on that point as well.

It's an utterly thankless task, and woefully underpaid for what it entails if/when the proverbial hits the fan.

You need the right sort of people doing the job but, at the same time, you need to pay the right wages if you're not attracting the right people.

If that's their primary job, then the security company that recruit them as temps probably need to stop offering the role to 18 year olds on minimum wage.

Always wondered why they don’t have an outdoor bit, even install a small beer stand to relieve the pressure in the concourse. Like you say most away grounds have this.

I thought the stewards inside the stadium were..in the main…employed directly by the club and not an agency..

My guess is security. The last ground went to personally that allowed fans out for a puff was Derby several years ago. If you have an outside area, how big would it be? Would it be 1 in 1 out? Or would you get the queue like for the bogs as someone is outside chaining all half time. The extra security needed on each point would be an added headache as they’ve got to stop people getting in as much. As a ex smoker who enjoyed a half time ciggy before it was banned, I understand why people want one, but also wish they’d consider others.

Or just give your lungs a rest for an hour or two. It is hardly an imposition or a breach of basic human rights.

Years back I had my season ticket in the Cobbold upper and they used to open the gate at half time so people could use the burger van. Oddly they stopped doing it just after the smoking ban was introduced.

No its certainly not about basic human rights! More just a live and let live tolerance. Afterall, a lot of folk like a beer with a game - others find alcohol smelly and drunks obnoxious - how would you feel about a booze ban in stadiums? That wouldn't be a human rights thing either, but would be pretty unkind. I can't see the problem with setting aside some outdoor space for smokers - it would negatively affect no one.

It’s not difficult, you open one set of doors and have a good sized pen made out with barriers and a steward on each corner, Heras fencing the best bet.
