He has to hit the ground running otherwise the press and social media are going to absolutely slaughter him. I can give them a headline to start: "Kraut Of Order!" (are you allowed to say that anymore? I'm sure it wouldn't bother The Sun anyway).

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Surely it mattered in the 1940s?

My late father certainly didn't like the Germans, but bearing in mind he was a Londoner who would have been bombed & then fought against Germany in WWII, that isn't hard to understand.
Understandably, the younger generations see it very differently, but the dreaded tabloids love dragging up Basil Fawlty-like anti-German nonsense.

Think that was the newspaper headline in either the Scottish Sun or the Daily Record. Brilliant

Yeah think it was. If memory serves me, John Barnes got the sack after that game too

Would love someone to make a real argument for patriotism these days. I get why in years gone by it's a thing but can't for the life of me fathom how relevant it is to the modern world.

The argument is that you cheer for a bloke from the UK in the 100m final. What if we have two finalists and one is from England and Scotland? What if they are both from England but one is from Suffolk? What if they are both from Suffolk but one is from the next road to where you live?

I find it quite bizarre to worry about how many medals Team GB has as opposed to other countries rather than just wanting to see the best, most dramatic or most exciting race or event.

What if the English sprinter is supposedly a nasty piece of work but the Jamaican or USA or Cuban sprinter next to them is supposedly a lovely person who does loads of good work for charitable causes?

Yes there was a war. The last of which was so long ago everyone who lived through it is pretty much now dead. Thomas Tuchel has no more to do with 1940's Germany than I have direct involvement with a war that ended a decade before my parents were born.

Always found patriotism a weird old thing. Especially in a multi-cultural world where the English could emigrate to Spain or Australia or wherever they wanted to be, whilst begrudging people fleeing wars or poverty who wanted to set up a life in a country where they could speak a little of the language.

I find it bizarre anyone is judged on anything other than their character, but as some people are still racist, sexist and homophobic then I can see why Xenophobia should equally, depressingly, live on.

Of course certain newspapers will revel in if if it goes wrong. Because for a country that enters every tournament as one of the favorites, we've done so well under English managers for the last 58 years!

I wanted an English manager because I think the manager should be from the Country he is taking charge of. The players need to be, so why not the manager?
As for the rest of your post, please do not belittle the World Wars. Millions of people died and gave their lives so that you can sit in your home and post freely on an internet forum. Estimated 20 million military personnel and 40 million civilians in WW2 and an estimated 22 million people died in WW1, including 11 million military personnel and 13 million civilians. I am old and remember the aftermath of the Second World War and I can tell you it wasn't a very nice experience and a long, long way from the life YOU live now.
Like I say, not the reason I didn't want a foreign manager in charge of England, but just because you weren't born then, please remember some of us are still here who did lose family during those horrific times.

I really don't see what WW2 has to do with selecting England's football manager. War is evil but football should bring everyone together, regardless of nationality. I was born in Ireland but grew up in England. Which nation should I be allowed to manage?

You are allowed to manage any country you so wish, just don't be surprised if not all are happy about it.

Yes. I am very, very proud to be English. I have no idea of your age, nor do I wish to know it, but the majority of my generation are still proud of our country and not afraid to say it. The War link was a reaction to another post, not as part of our choice of manager. I thought I made that very clear in that post.
I haven't had a pop at anyone who thinks it is a good appointment, so don't get your pop at me for being against it. Just my personal preference, not trying to sway anybody either way.

I also think that the England team should have an English head coach, but that's purely my opinion. The FA are in a bit of a bind because they have the money, we have a decent crop of players & the consensus (with which I agree) is that Southgate hasn't been getting the best out of them. Hence the appointment of an experienced coach with a good record at the top level of football.

That's fine, as long as you have a good reason why the England manager should be English.
By the way, You're British, not English.

To be fair I can see why some wouldn’t be happy with having a foreign manager in post. And I can understand the German element adding to their unhappiness.

But I struggle to understand how having a German manager will dampen the national teams achievements if England were to win the WC or Euros. Just seems a bit childish to me.

I have this forum on Football only. That's because I don't wish to talk about politics, religion or news on an internet forum. You can of course chose to talk to others about it, that is your right in this free country that I live in, but I chose not to.
It isn't a cop out, just not something I am interested in debating on an internet forum.
I only qualified to play for England, so that makes me English. I am proud of that, but please, feel free to feel however you like about any country you chose.

Just for clarity, I think the England manager should be English. I also think that Spain should have a Spanish manager. France a French, Germany a German, Italy an Italian, America an American, Scotland a Scottish, Kenya a Kenyan etc. I hope that has helped.

Nothing wrong with having national pride.

It only starts to be an issue when people consider their nationality to be superior to others. Or use it as an excuse to act like a bell end - football hooliganism being a good example for a football site.

Do the Germans consider England to be a footballing rival? Or is it almost one sided?

Actually it's very one sided. Germans view the Dutch as their greatest footballing rivals in Europe.
