Snowdon this time of year 14:06 - Oct 24 with 2258 viewsunbelievablue

Thinking of tackling it next Saturday. Weather wise it looks okay - no snow/rain and above freezing at the top (before wind chill). That seems feasible to me. Any advice/local knowledge much appreciated.

Pyg track up, miners' track down is the idea.

We did it a couple of years ago in the summer (I know, not exactly comparable). Despite being relatively fit, it was a challenge, and in the peak of summer, was already incredibly (more than you'd even expect) steep, and despite being bone dry, was slippery near the top on the steeper parts. The final stretch after the train stop is the worst part for slippery/steepness, so make sure you plan and prep with suitable shoes and possibly even walking poles for more grip.

Shoes ? You need walking boots, even for the well worn trails up Yr Wyddfa. OP should be fine as long as they leave soon after sun up and keep a weather eye out.

Yeah would ideally start at 8am, well provisioned/kitted out. Have done high enough stuff in Lakes in Nov/Feb so used to cold, just don't want anything worse than that.

If you walk the Lakeland fells then all you have to worry about is the day being a little longer due to the height...and the overload of tourists, which, hopefully will be a little lighter at this time of the year.

by suitable shoes, I did mean hiking boots! Wouldn't dare try it in trainers, even in the summer

Take the train :)

We went in August on holiday once, it was reasonably sunny & fine in Llanberis, took the train up, got to the top, stuck in a cloud, couldn't see more than 5m in front of you. Took the train down, box ticked, I've been up Snowdon.

Remember you've only got 10hrs of daylight this time of year and the clocks go back this weekend.

Spent some time in the lakes this week. Did a classic fell running route of about 15 miles and the weather was relatively shocking. Only went up to 830m. I've spent many years in the hills in the UK. I would suggest:

- tried and tested footwear is key. Trusted hiking boots or deep lug trail runners are optimal.
- poles make a massive difference on the way up
- take a map and compass. Batteries run out on phones and they can be relatively useless on high peaks. If you have a gpx watch I would stick the route in on that too
- take a head torch. If you don't have one, get one. Petzl would be my recommendation
- Expect terrible weather. Last year I spent a month in the hills and probably got 3/4 clear sunny days

People massively underestimate the hills in the UK and this creates tremendous pressure on local mountain rescue services. Which are essentially all volunteer and donation funded/run.

Let me know how you get on. I'm doing the Snowdon marathon next year but haven't been up personally.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I've taken groups to the Snowdon viewpoint around 12-15 times this year (that's not actually on Snowdon and I've driven them there) and seen the peak maybe three times.

Expect cloud at the top at the very least, if you don't get it then bonus.

I probably ought to add, I've been twice in the last month and have seen it both times, the first time was after a miserable morning though.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

I did it in trainers about three or gourd years ago. Was a bit dicey near the top and in hindsight, was a stupid thing to do really.

Was a nice challenge though and glad I did it. Albeit weather near the top wasn’t great. Sleet and hail for about 20 mins was a particular lowlight

Yo Eddy!

I did Snowdon when I was 15.

Piece of piss!

Couldn't even get to the starting point now though.

Just get the train up next time and enjoy a nice rouge en route.

I am looking forward to it - done more technical ones before and this should be fine if the weather is alright. I've also sorted myself out and dropped loads of weight since I last saw you (much like your boy!) so it will be easier than it could have.

Cheers. All of the above is a given for us. Been doing the Lakes since I was a lad. I think just cos it is an unknown range I am less confident.

It’s a motorway, so you should be fine if you’re used to the Lakes. If the weather’s rough avoid Crib Goch, as someone seems to get blown off it every year. Depending on which way you go, the main thing to be wary of is the drop on the right as you descend from the summit. You’ll see it if it’s clear and it’s not hard to miss then. The path’s wide, so it’s no issue. But if the weather’s clagged in, just make sure you don’t turn right too early looking for the Pyg Track back down to Pen-y-Pass (if you’re going that way).

The classic horseshoe is a great walk if you’ve got the fitness for it and are happy on sharp ridges, or you can do an alternative less scary version by missing out Crib Goch if it’s too windy. Or just an up and down if you’re just looking to tick it off. Lots of options. It should be a bit quieter than normal this time of year, so enjoy.

Did this very route in October half term a few years back - beautiful sunny day at the bottom, but snowing at the top. Not loads, but worth packing for. Despite the height, it's a really easy walk.

Saw one kid (i'd say about 7/8) crying his eyes out in the snow as his parents were walking him up there and all he had on was shorts and t-shirts - his parents said he was just 'emotional'.

We had torrential rain and 60mph winds in August...so.......

Brilliant place though. Have the enormous pasty in the café at the top

Literally every time I see this post I see 'Swindon' rather than 'Snowdon'.

And the last few times, as a consequence, what passes for my mind has been conjuring up images of Melinda Messenger - does Snowdon have just one majestic peak, or a pair?
