Fuel tax and road tax is quick, cheap and easy to collect, there is no way to avoid paying it, road pricing will be much more complex and expensive to install and collect, let alone police it to ensure the system is not disabled. It could end up being so expensive to administer with cars being bought and sold that it does not actually raise any revenue. |  | | |

I mean I'm not sure they or their successors will be able to resist the temptation to push it up a bit. But it does decouple the revenue stream from the need for people to buy motor fuel at a time of increasing electric vehicle useage. Which may make it a bit better for those of us not yet in a place to transition. |
In the long run extra costs are inevitable. Create a new tax then increase it at will. Look at Insurance Premium Tax, when introduced it was 2.5%. | |

They could raise tax by £300bn and it would still be frittered down the drain on inefficiency. Under the Tories this went to their mates under labour it will go to unions and a broken NHS.

22bn was the "black hole" (the difference between the stated position and the audit findings), the extra 18bn was more of a regular uplift, what would have had to be spent anyway "to avoid real-term cuts (inflation, rising costs etc)" | |
