Sad, sad news about Whymark. (n/t) on 12:18 - Oct 31 by Papillon64 | 1977 my first away game was V Norwich when Trevor scored the only goal. I was 13 and my father got 2x tickets in the home end through Watneys Red barrel , wore my blue and white bar scarf and can remember dad getting loads of grief. After that I was always Whymark in the playground. Great servant to the club. massivly underated and all round good bloke. Thanks for the memories... |
My first away game too, at the age of 8. In the away end though with my Dad. Fabulous player Whymark. RIP Trev.
Sad, sad news about Whymark. (n/t) on 13:28 - Oct 31 with 1553 views | Whos_blue | Just before my time really, but part of Town's 70's folklore. All the clips show how important he was to Town and their style of play in that great era. Always enjoyed him on Life's a pitch etc. Came across as a lovely fella. Once a blue, always a blue. I'm sure the club will do him proud on Saturday in some way.

Sad, sad news about Whymark. (n/t) on 13:36 - Oct 31 with 1538 views | Heathlander | That is very sad news indeed. As a lad Trevor Whymark was my favourite player. I had one of those badges with his face on it. He was a sensational player.. Best header of the ball in football. His link up play with first David Johnson and then Paul Mariner was sublime. That WBA game that people have already mentioned was a day never to forget. Should have got more England caps. He was that good. Such a shame he missed out on the Cup Final. Although Mrs T gave him man of the match. RIP Trevor and thank you for the memories. My first hero.

We had a team that were great in the air at both ends of the pitch: Beattie, Hunter, Mariner & Whymark. Only Big Al left now.

I remember the “chant” obviously in an Ipswich accent “Goo on Wymark” back in the day from the old boys around me, another reminder of my age.
Sad, sad news about Whymark. (n/t) on 15:07 - Oct 31 with 1312 views | BloomBlue | Very sad news. In many ways he was an unsung hero. Often didn't get the credit he deserved. He was a consistent performer and created many goals for the Town. Strange now how the goals assist stat is highly regarded, whereas when Trev played it wasn't really mentioned. RIP TW

Yeah, just slightly before my time but recall seeing a picture of him in a Grimsby kit at Portman Road. I’ll have to ask my Dad regarding him memories of Whymark at the weekend. [Post edited 31 Oct 2024 17:53]

Sad, sad news about Whymark. (n/t) on 18:49 - Oct 31 with 988 views | Churchman | Trevor Whymark was a fabulous player. He was famous for his heading ability but was damn good on the ground too. He was a really good strike partner to whoever he played with; a proper team player. I was lucky enough to see TW play in his prime here and his England match too. Whymark was integral to Robson’s first two top four teams und unluckily missed out on the cup final team with injuries beginning take their toll. 335 appearances including sub, 104 goals so a 1 in 3 striker. Pretty good but Mr Whymark was so much more than that. Top, top footballer. RIP Trevor and thanks for the great memories.

Sad, sad news about Whymark. (n/t) on 11:08 - Oct 31 by GlasgowBlue | I was there that day. I rarely missed a home game between 1974 and 1982 but that is one of probably ten games that I can remember as if it was yesterday. |
Me too. North Stand. Brilliant. He was an exciting player in a great team at a brilliant time.

Very good summary. For some reason I always recall that 7-0 thrashing of WBA in 1976 on the old Match of the Week programme the following day! Wonder how many of you can immediately recite the scorers of goals 3,4 and 5? I still remember them (sadly I know being a fervent Yellow) but they were screamers. Answers on the proverbial 'back of a fag packet' please. A Darren Whymark owns a garage business on the industrial estate here in Long Stratton and I know him well. Quick look at his family Facebook page confirms Trevor was a relative. Might even have been Darren's father, I don't know. Will go and see him tomorrow to find out. Darren is one of the nicest and most genuine people you could ever meet. A trademark that sees to run in the family then.

Indeed and tributes also on that very peculiar message board 'Wrath of The Barclay' with a number of Yellows talking about the family connection and Trevor's very local roots.

Sad, sad news about Whymark. (n/t) on 10:56 - Oct 31 by hammo56 | Remember his 4 goals against West Brom when we beat them 7-0 at Portman Road. It was Mariner’s home debut that day as well. As has already been said,Trevor was a vastly underated player for Town. RIP Trevor. |
Also bagged x4 against Lazio in that UEFA Cup run that saw off Real Madrid as well. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a better aerial threat in an Ipswich shirt, but his ability with the ball at his feet was also superb. I’ve reached that age where those Ipswich heroes of my youth will inevitably leave us, but it’s still a shock when you see it in print. Thanks for the goals and the utter commitment you showed every time you pulled that No 10 shirt on. Let’s raise the fu**in’ roof in appreciation on Saturday.

You would know better than me but I remember that famous Paul Mariner headed goal in the 1-0 win v Liverpool. Now that was a textbook header. The famous 'hanging in the air' and powering in the header. Fantastic. Unfortunately, the art and skill of 'heading' is being frowned on. Some of this due to the medical links to dementia but some just simply due to the modern day preference for 'playing football on the ground'. I still love seeing the great headed goals, something magical about them. Will definitely tune in to Talk Sport Breakfast tomorrow as the old hero will be wallowing in nostalgia and tributes as so he should.

I saw the game, but I couldn’t remember the goal order so cheated. I won’t spoil other people’s fun. The memory is always Beattie nearly taking the keeper’s (John Osborne? Had no front teeth anyway) head off and Mariner’s top corner job. I seem to remember Trevor’s goals were a mix. I’ll have to re look at YouTube. I know he was born in Burston near Diss so a true East Anglian boy. I also know it’s a cliche, but I never heard anyone have a bad word to say about him - yes, something that appears to run in the family from your experience. Alzheimer’s/dementia is an awful disease. Anyone who has seen a loved one go through it knows it’s death by bacon slicer. It’s cruel. The person you knew just goes bit by bit. But nothing can take away the memories of a lovely player and by the sound of it even better man. [Post edited 31 Oct 2024 22:19]

Sad, sad news about Whymark. (n/t) on 21:29 - Oct 31 with 730 views | DJR | Very sad news. He struck up a partnership with first Rod Belfit and then David Johnson before we signed Paul Mariner. He was integral to the Robson team that went up a gear in the early 70s, and was good enough to earn an England cap in 1977. He also scored a goal at Carrow Road in the second leg of the 1973 Texaco Cup Final, a game I remember well for the post-match celebrations by fans on the pitch. [Post edited 31 Oct 2024 21:44]

Sad, sad news about Whymark. (n/t) on 21:32 - Oct 31 with 721 views | bluebudgie | I was at the game versus WBA what a day it was! Town had beaten West Brom and West Ham for the signing of Paul Mariner earlier in the week, and the crowd were buzzing. It was a brilliant performance and atmosphere capped by the four goals that Trevor scored along with Paul Mariner scoring on his debut.. The win put Town 2nd just behind Liverpool but Town was destined to finish the season 3rd behind Liverpool and Man City, such was the fantastic ability of Ipswich Town back then. We have now seen three players and a great manager die from that team Kevin Beattie, Paul Mariner and now Trevor, all amazing players and England internationals and of course Sir Bobby one of the greatest England managers.RIP to all of you Town legends.
