If O’Shea is injured … 21:00 - Nov 1 with 5044 viewsAVJones

Play Woolfenden then !

Find that bit of the press conference a bit odd.

It does seem a pretty obvious question to ask - if he's been injured, why has he been getting the nod, and what does that mean for Woolfenden?

Obviously there are more diplomatic ways of asking it. But I imagine this is something that most Town fans would be interested in knowing the answer to, and it's a pretty difficult direct question to dodge.

Into the vacuum of information unfortunately floods speculation, when it might well be that there is really nothing untoward in it.

KM is data driven. He wants some speed at the heart of defence. I suspect its as simple as that.

Ongoing defeats with an injured centre half suggest otherwise …

No idea what you agreed to. But agreeing with Frimley would, statistically, be likely to put you on the wrong side of the argument!

Ho ho ho. Not.

I agreed that being injured makes you run slower.

No need to have a dig at another poster.

If I was Wolf I’d find it insulting that an injured player is picked instead of me. Hence I find it very odd that our manager would insinuate that. Not good for team morale.

Maybe KM finds him a bit leaky in defence.

One of O'Shea and Woolfenden is probably going to have to play at right back.

I dunno. I reckon KM will go for Johnson. Guy needs to play and if he's fit he'll slot in there i think.

A lot of difference between various problems - muscle sprain or strain, herniated disc, spinal stenosis. The last can be very severe but only intermittent in its pain & other effects, so in-between bouts it's poss to run at your max speed. During bouts you might be struggling to get to the bathroom though, speaking from personal experience!

You may very well be right. I just find it odd that that question wasn't asked. First, the answer would be interesting. Secondly, it may help to put silly rumours to bed, that aren't at all constructive.

I'm not sure O'Shea has been terrific in the last few games, which is eminently forgivable if he's not fit.

Players often play through injuries. Al-Hamadi had an injury all the time he was with us last season.

Whilst that's true, O'Shea has started all of the last six games, and played 90 mins in 5 of those games. In the Premier League. Al-Hamadi has only ever started once for us in the league unless I'm mistaken. At any level.

I think playing full games in the heart of defence whilst carrying an injury is different from coming off the bench for a few minutes up front.

I'm not for a moment saying that Kieran has made the wrong decision. I can't possibly know that, and he's more than earned the right to be assumed right. But I don't think this is a situation that crops up frequently, and it would be interesting to know his thinking on this one.

Not only that but he's made it public. McKenna had already made it clear to the squad he rates a crocked O'Shea higher than Woolfenden. Now he's telling everyone else that as well.

As you say, he's earned the right to be assumed right. But it seems an odd way to manage a player who was a key part of a successful XI last season.

I do find it odd McKenna wasn't pressed about this at the press conference too.

"I do find it odd McKenna wasn't pressed about this at the press conference too".

As far as Phil's concerned, maybe it's to do with having enough respect for KM & the players to not press in a way that's unhelpful. Don't forget he's a fan, as well as being a top journo.

As for other journos*, the depth of their knowledge re Town evidenced so far this season suggests that they don't know enough about us to actually ask searching questions! (*Edit: with the honourable exception of those from The Gruniad, obviously :) ).

Very simplistic view, but probably that McKenna just rates him a lot more than Woolfenden. You’re not spending the best part of £12m to have O’Shea sat on the bench, and given the likes of Wolves - a pretty established Prem club and Brentford - a data driven club, probably one we’re aspiring to - goes to show he’s a half decent centre half.

Whether Woolfenden deserved to be dropped/replaced is a debate for another day, but I suspect it’s as simple as the above.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

Genuine question, but if it's a severe injury, do the club not have a duty of care to protect the player? Severe implies that playing is going to exacerbate the injury.

There's never really been any pressing since Ashton came in. We know that's changed. Keep everyone in check etc. There's been plenty of opportunities despite the success to be able press on certain things and it just doesn't happen now.

Probably a good thing yes. But also its not normal for local journos not to be able to ask certain questions in fear they upset the head master.

You see some of the other questions put to managers across various clubs and our local journo questions are no where near as intrusive.
