Rachel reeves driving up prices with tax and spend budget warns Bank of England 09:01 - Nov 8 with 8142 viewsZapers

The Bank of England last night warned Britain is facing a fresh spike in inflation as rachel reeves tax and spend budget piles extra pressure onto households and businesses.

Lenders have been raising mortgage costs in recent days despite the Bank's highly anticipated interest rate cut to 4.75pc on Thursday, with financial markets betting it will be the only cut this year.

Governor Andrew Bailey said a "Substantial" increase in public spending and tax changes that "clearly raise the cost of employment " will drive prices higher over the next three years.

I presume this still wont affect the working person.

Isn't the best thing just to ignore, and not respond to, posts or threads which appear to me to be deliberately provocative, often misinformed and not really designed to further proper debate?

If that was done, they would soon die a death, or just become echo chambers for a few like-minded posters.

If you think having an opinion about the performance of the current government is provocative, it tells me you are so entrenched in the labour party, you can' share an honest criticism.

it's an interesting discussion but when someone's continuously lying, being corrected and then lying again, it's best to call them out.

facts are important, and if the liars are unchallenged, have more chance of being believed by the gullible or those who don't have time to research everything and look behind the bluster

It's entirely up to others but if no one had responded to the original post it would have died a death.

I resigned from the Labour Party over a year ago, having been disillusioned with it for a number of years.

I'm not absolving the last government of any blame, they are now history, and rightly so.

Covid added to a huge amount of debt.

Which is why it was outright wrong and dishonest to impose an ideological tax cut as a bribe when then funding was not there to achieve it without doing further damage to already decimated services.

There is very little evidence (either on TWTD or elsewhere) that people's views can be successfully challenged.
[Post edited 8 Nov 2024 9:57]

Its not about the person being challenged, so much as others who are observing and who would otherwise potentially pick up nonsense as fact.

I'm not sure you are correct, but we will never know.

I think even the most blinkered tory would have known at that point, that government was toast, and very burnt toast;)

That's probably only marginally more reliable than Twitter as a source of reliable, sane, serious and unbiased information nowadays.

I'm not sure it's even that, speaking as a former Telegraph reader.

Its worth noting that half of the budget tax increase is just replacing the cut that the previous government made, when it was plainly innappropriate to do so.

It's not even that. The burden has been transferred from workers (who saw their rate cut) to employers (whose rose). The whole process has worked out beneficially for ordinary people.

And he might well have been right.

Just for your information, I am not the rabid right winger that you think I am. I'm pretty center ground, but just as i thought the tories made a hash of things, i'm pretty sure we will all be saying the same thing about this government sooner or later.

Governments have an impossible task. There is not enough money in tax receipts in order to pay for everything.

They will just keep borrowing, and costs will keep going up.

he wasn't right, it caused massive amounts of misery to the ordinary people that nige lies about caring about.

if you are as "center"(might want to recalibrate your algorithms to your uk audience!) as you claim, why does everything you post come straight from right-wing tropes or criticisms?

i do agree that we need to tax higher, that's my biggest criticism of the labour pre-election promises.

however, had they done so then right-wing edgelords pushing a similar agenda to your posts would have been spreading disinformation to stop them getting elected in the first place

This isn't consistent with what you've said before though. You said that if you were living in the UK you would have voted Reform.

That's not compatible with saying your viewers are centrist.

Totally agree. But Labour saying they wouldn't raise taxes for the working man/woman they backed themselves into a corner. What they should have done if they wanted to keep both industry and working people happy, if that's the right word when you are increasing Government take, would have been to increase N.I. for industry by a half a percent and reversed the Tories second 2p cut of N.I. to employees.

My opinion is this. Without a massive cash injection into services at this time along with huge tax rises…..All would have collapsed.
The massive population rise and the sheer cost of illegal immigration has killed public services and everyone’s finances. 3000 illegal arrivals in the past 2 weeks alone.
I personally would take any direction of Ian Bailey with a pinch of salt.
The biggest financial cock up ever was created during his watch at the FCA.
So big it will make the PPI mess seem a tiny issue.
The recent decision by the court of appeal shut down the entire car finance industry and potentially to cost tens of billions in redress.

You are right, until you seek to blame it all on population rise (code for immigration) and illegal immigration.

And until you went on to complain about a recent court of appeal decision which basically reflects rules which have been in place for some years and therefore only has an impact on historic cases rather than the whole car finance industry.

No idea what "FCA cock up" you are referencing. You will need to be more specific.

I'm not sure if anyone has done the maths but perhaps there's a case for saying that the cut to employees' NI matches the amount workers might miss out on pay rises due to the increase in employers' NI.

In other words, it's all swings and roundabouts.

But the financial mess we are in is due in no small measure to two reckless Tory cuts to employees' NI.

He was CEO of the FCA 2016-20 and had the power to change the rules. Rules changed 2021.
I suggest you research undisclosed commissions.
New judgment made by the the court of appeal took it further, all commissions not just DCA.
Resulting in the complete shutdown of new car finance business and Banks running for the hills.
Potential now to include other markets outside of motor also.
That’s the short of it.
