Rachel reeves driving up prices with tax and spend budget warns Bank of England 09:01 - Nov 8 with 8135 views | Zapers | The Bank of England last night warned Britain is facing a fresh spike in inflation as rachel reeves tax and spend budget piles extra pressure onto households and businesses. Lenders have been raising mortgage costs in recent days despite the Bank's highly anticipated interest rate cut to 4.75pc on Thursday, with financial markets betting it will be the only cut this year. Governor Andrew Bailey said a "Substantial" increase in public spending and tax changes that "clearly raise the cost of employment " will drive prices higher over the next three years. I presume this still wont affect the working person.

Rachel reeves driving up prices with tax and spend budget warns Bank of England on 21:40 - Nov 8 with 1169 views | Swansea_Blue | Why do you ignore anything positive they're doing and only concentrate on the simplistic headline costs (whilst ignoring the potential benefits)? We've had 14 years of decline and disinvestment leading to a massive increase in NHS waiting lists, itself leading to record numbers of people unable to work. Crumbling school buildings that can't be used. Large increases in family and child poverty, with some kids turning up at school every day hungry because their families can't afford breakfast. A housing crisis, including one of the worse rental sectors in europe. A justice and prison crisis. People struggling to make ends meet as they are messed around in the gig economy where they had no rights to any form of normal employee benefits. A broken higher education system. A backward looking energy approach that was reverting to granting licences for coal mining and more oil and gas drilling. Rivers and beaches plagued by raw sewage. Underperforming public transport links with rubbish private bus operators closing routes left, right and centre and one of the worse rail networks in Europe. That's all been getting worse for the last 14 years and longer. Yet on all the above there have already been policies announced and/or laws passed that improve matters in every single case. We could argue that they're not doing enough quickly enough, but there's been positive movement in pretty much every area that desperately needs fixing. I don't even like them, but it's clear to see they doing much to try and fix things and are an improvement so far on the last 14 years. Even your complaint is based on something minimal. Lenders have in the last week increased rates by between 0.1% and 0.25%. After Liz Truss' disastrous mini budget rated jumped from about 2.5% to over 6%. It's chalk and cheese.

Such a shame that the conservatives failed to actually maintain essential services properly, necessitating this action now. |
Of course, there is something in that point of view. But it’s astonishing to me how little Covid is mentioned in this whole discussion. Estimated cost of £310-410bn!!! That’s massive!!!

Hopefully the Covid commission can claw some of that back from some Tories and others who fraudulently profited from PPE and other such contracts or provided unusable items. SB

It would be a mere spit in the ocean in the amount of money wasted on dealing with Covid, most of which was wasted by ineptitude rather than dishonesty. Where and who would it be recovered from? The money had been spent, and is gone, and is an enormous part of the reason why the economy is in such a mess. Not currently being helped by Labour’s economic ineptitude

That's not really the point though is it? Even if the money has been spent there is recourse to recover money or hand out sentences to the likes of Mone and many others as well as looking at the role of those handing out the contracts and dealing with those handed out to friends without proper tender. You seem to be saying that people can get away with dishonesty and fraud if they spend the money quickly and it's not a large proportion of any total spend. SB | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That’s really not what I said. I said it would make little to no difference to the amount of money wasted, as you seemed to imply that it would by saying that some money could be clawed back. Retribution on those who profited from Covid dishonestly is another matter entirely. [Post edited 9 Nov 2024 10:58]

No, I take them on board like I take on food. The only difference is, food doesn't start out as sh1t. I get the impression, you're still upset because you said stuff about Omari and aired you political views close together and when I noticed, you got defensive as you realised you'd aired your truth a little too openly. Again, you jump to entirely incorrect assumptions, misinterpret messaging, attack somebody and come across as an enormously intolerant person. Your student union political views are utterly irrelevant to the majority of the population. You, and people like you, are the reason that people like Trump and Farage continue to appeal to such a large segment of the population in the U.K. and the US (not me I must add, despite how you have attempted to pigeon hole me and anyone else who doesn’t have exactly the same views as you do) The issue is that you’re not bright enough to see this.

Which is why you have abused me twice, completely unprovoked, and not answered anything I've said? Not agreeing with your views if they're wrong makes me intolerant but you some wronged party? It was you, and people just like you, that elected Jeremy Corbyn on us as the sole opposition to the Tories in 2015. You inflicted Brexit, Johnson, Truss and 8 years of ever deepening right wing Tory policies on us because of an inability to see anything from anyone else’ point of view. It was obvious at the time Corbyn was elected as LOTO that he would be too weak to hold the government to power, and that is exactly what happened. This is what has just happened in the IS. It’s a doom loop, and the far left is too stupid and/or too ideological to see it

I hated Corbyn. You’re just pulling anything out now, going on about voting patterns and popularity like it’s in some way connected to you being abusive, hypocritical and intolerant. The fact you think being popular and needing people to agree with you, seems to be your character defect, not mine. You’ve done it out of the blue to others on here today too. Perhaps you need some time to reflect on why that is. Then you can maybe engage with what is said like most of us, instead of looking to settle scores only you’re keeping in your head. I hope you feel better soon.

This is absolute nonsense and pretty rude. Why should people see things from a viewpoint if that viewpoint is not supported by facts? It's a false equivalence fallacy and quite insulting and to be honest I'm absolutely bored of the narrative that one must consider other viewpoints even if they are provably nonsense. That narrative has got us where we are, not the viewpoint of left-leaning people like you are trying to claim. The fallacy that all views are equal is one of the biggest problems we face in current times. SB [Post edited 9 Nov 2024 11:46]

I rest my case. “Viewpoint not supported by facts”. Americans rated the economy and illegal immigration as their biggest concerns. Those are the facts, and they weren’t addressed by Harris. I can barely remember Harris mentioning them. It was constant idealism, don’t go back, don’t vote for darkness etc. Abstract principles when they should have been listening to real concerns. If you want to refer to rudeness, then I’d suggest the previous poster’s insinuations of racism are much ruder than anything I have posted.

Why are you focusing on the US when we were discussing Labour, Covid in the UK and Brexit? "Americans rated the economy and illegal immigration as their biggest concerns. Those are the facts, and they weren’t addressed by Harris." This isn't true, those are viewpoints not facts. They aren't really supported by evidence, they are a narrative spun by the Republicans to allow them to point a finger at someone that can be blamed. You've essentially proven my point that opinions without evidence supporting them should be given equal weighting in many peoples eyes and that shouldn't be the case. SB

They are facts. You seem to have misunderstood what I meant. The facts are that they were the main concerns of the American public, and as such needed to be addressed directly. Whether they were right to be concerned about those issues is an opinion. Get it?

Cheers dubs. Things they’re doing might not work, and it seems there will be some losers (including some cold pensioners, which is far from ideal). And I know many of us would like them to go after the mega rich. But at least they’re trying to do something rather than wanging on about immigrants.
