The ongoing Muric analysis 10:03 - Nov 11 with 5315 views | bsw72 | The whole Muric debate is interesting, and a lot of it is about perception with people seeing and interpreting based on previous experience. With goalkeepers, people generally *only* remember mistakes especially if the mistakes lead to goals and the team are not winning games. There are anomolies such as Gordon Banks, but in the day of 24x7 coverage and micro analysis, this is now as rare as unicorn crap. Muric made some very obvious mistakes which led to goals in his early Town career, and these are what people are remembering, so whenever he does something slightly wrong now, the error is magnified, especially as we are now at a higher level where the opportunities to "offset" any errors by the forwards are limited. I remember Walton making a number of mistakes in the League One season and Hladcky doing the same last year - but it mattered less as we generally came away with the points as we were able to outscore opponents, therefore the memory of those errors is significantly softened. The other interesting one is whether he is "commanding" his area. My thought again is possibly not as well as he could, but again I think there are mitigations. Not only is the Goalkeeper new this season, but also at times half or even 75% of the defence is new. For a goalkeeper it is essential to understand how the defenders all play and work together and subsequently build the relationship. Worth noting that he has claimed more high balls in the PL this season than any other keeper . . . You can only do so much in training, as player behaviour differs significantly in match situations, therefore while Muric behaviours gets a significant focus when the ball is ion the area, there is without doubt an element of the other defenders not taking control and doing the same. The one thing we have in Muric that is becoming clearer and clearer is an excellent shot stopper, especially in 1-1 situations, and that for me is the biggest positive and the primary role for a keeper, as it tends to be instinctive, vs things like passing and ability on the ball which can be taught. I personally think that the benefits of Muric far outweigh the areas he needs to develop, and as we play more games with the defenders getting used to each other, he will become an integral cog in the ITFC machine. Remember McKenna rarely buys players for the immediate, he uses loans for that, he buys players bevcause he knows they are good, but can see potential to develop and grow them. The less the fans react negatively or apprehensively to Muric the better he will become.
The ongoing Muric analysis on 10:13 - Nov 11 with 4434 views | Jon_456 | He is a huge upgrade on what we’ve had previously in terms of goalkeeping. As you say, his shot stopping and 1v1s is very good. I would disagree about commanding his area though. Maybe it’s because it was a weakness of Hladky but IMO Muric has been excellent at this and there’s been many examples of him easing the pressure by claiming corners / crosses. One that caught my eye was the cross in the 2nd half yesterday where Son (I think) would have had the entire box to himself and Muric read it and must have been out about 15 yards to claim it. Only question mark for me is with his feet. Hopefully that improves.
The ongoing Muric analysis on 10:26 - Nov 11 with 4298 views | BrentwoodBlagger2 | I have been a major critic of Muric in the past, but I thought he was excellent yesterday. His shot stopping, handling and most of his kicking was decent. Long may it continue. Spurs fans seated around me were commenting how good he was!
The ongoing Muric analysis on 10:28 - Nov 11 with 4279 views | Basuco | The understanding of keeper and 2/3 CB's is vital to a strong defence, in the same way the partnership of Szmodics and Delap is coming together nicely. Muric is getting stronger with every game and looks a very good keeper, you also have to remember he is up against significantly higher quality players this season than he would have faced in the Championship. He is a huge upgrade IMO.
The ongoing Muric analysis on 10:28 - Nov 11 with 4280 views | _clive_baker_ | He has all the ingredients, as you say he really is a very good shot stopper and he's shown at times he can be really commanding of his 6 yard box, plucking those crosses out of the air and relieving the pressure. I think where he lets himself down so far is some of his decision making, the bit between his ears, I'm hoping that'll come but there's a part of me that thinks we probably have to accept that bit of rough with the smooth as its seemingly been a characteristic of his game throughout his career and neither Man City or Burnley ironed it out. Ironically the mistake he's been most criticised for wasn't actually that, it was the winning goal at Brentford which he really should've saved IMO but those things happen. Its the more avoidable bits that I find frustrating, the decision making, just being a bit street wise at times and knowing when to play out or go long (and not throw it). Incidents like the 2nd goal at Man City, we're likely losing that game whether he does that or not, but that was really silly. My heart was in my mouth when dropped that ball yesterday with a player behind him, he didn't seem to check over his shoulder. Things like that which feel so avoidable and the difference, as he clearly has the technical ability. That might come with age, he wouldn't be the first rough diamond who needs a bit of polishing. He reminds me a bit of David James at a similar age. [Post edited 11 Nov 2024 10:37]

I was going to post similar. His catching is better than Hladky's was. A valuable attribute in a division where especially fast, agile and cunning attackers will be arriving in the box or getting into unmarked positions to take advantage of every cross and corner.

Yes if by "commanding his area" you mean claiming crosses, that's not Muric' problem. It's that his risk management isn't quite all there yet. I don't think he has the full confidence of our centre backs yet. Was an incident yesterday when Johnson made a tackle on the edge of the box, just about got enough of the ball for it not to be a foul, and O'Shea was shielding it back towards just right of our post. He had to scream at Muric to come get the ball lest he'd have struggled to see it out for a goal kick. Muric' distribution isn't as good as Hladky's. Eg that outside of foot pass yesterday that we just avoided conceding from, the accuracy of his long passing generally. The throws late on in games when defending leads that only just reach the half way line, where most coaches would say: aim for a touchline as deep into the opposition's half as possible (in other words, kick, don't throw). But there are very few keepers in world football as good feet as Hladky's, so was always going to be a stretch to replace. But having said that, Muric' shot stopping is better than Hladky's. His crossing-claiming is undoubtedly better. He occasionally misjudges the flight and gets caught in no-mans-land, eg at West Ham, but overall cross-management is still better than Hladky. 25 is young for a keeper. Just as Woolfenden's decision-making improved as he matured, we have to hope that Muric' does too. I think we'll only start seeing the best of him next season onwards, and then only if we're patient and give him experience for the whole of this season. But our patience shouldn't be infinite.

"But there are very few keepers in world football as good feet as Hladky's, so was always going to be a stretch to replace". I think you do a serious disservice to the difference in the level/quality of opponent's pressing between the Championship and PL. It's like comparing apples and oranges to be honest. Burnley fans will tell you Muric absolutely took the p!ss with the ball at his feet in the Championship. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I said from the moment we signed him, he's either the sublime or the ridiculous with not much in between. You just have to price that in to your thinking, really.

The ongoing Muric analysis on 11:06 - Nov 11 with 3946 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | I think he's had a good start overall and harshly criticised at times. He's made a lot of excellent saves at key moments which I think people sometimes forget about. The 4th goal at Brentford splits opinions, but he made 2 crucial saves at 3-2 which would have killed us out of the game had 1 of those hit the net. Compared to Vicario yesterday, who didn't catch anything and didn't want to command his box, Muric is very strong and positive in this play, something that is a centre backs dream.

The ongoing Muric analysis on 11:35 - Nov 11 with 3792 views | DJR | He seems to have more of an issue with distribution when he tries to play it out centrally, as in the case of the build up to the second goal. Perhaps he just shouldn't be doing this because his distribution out wide to the full backs is generally good. As it is, we've moved on from playing out from the back as the default option not least because that is more difficult in the Premier League, so my view is, if in doubt, "hoof it", not least because Morsy, who tends to be the recipient, isn't as imperious getting the ball in such positions as he has been in the last two or three seasons. Agree with that. The one he made low to his right against Brentford was an excellent save at 3-2 and kept us in the game. Another smart one with his leg from Solanke yesterday at 2-1. In the 5 games we've drawn he's also made some good stops in most of them.
The ongoing Muric analysis on 13:26 - Nov 11 with 3407 views | Steve_M | To add to the thoughtful discussion on this thread: I like him, having first seen him at Man City and had enormous doubts I think he's got better as the season has gone on. He's definitely got a rick in him nearly every match though, some of that is communication, others more like brain-fades when he just seems to switch off. I wonder if some if it is just the price tag and the move to a new club. There's a definite improvement from Hladky in terms of actual goalkeeping basics, coming for crosses and making saves. There are times he looks very secure, including the first half at West Ham right until the cross he didn't go for, and yesterday's second half he was excellent. I'm still not sure if we've spent our money wisely there but, as with Ben Johnson, definite signs of two players settling in and making key contributions to the side. Actually, add O'Shea to that, good at Brighton but then a bix mixed until the last two matches.

"...coming for crosses and making saves" - do you think Hladky was better than Walton in this respect? I don't. If you agree then it begs the question, is Muric better and is Muric better with his feet? Like you, i don't think it's been that good an investment to date and out of all the investments, which naturally don't live up to expectations, this is one position that comes under the microscope far more.

Muric is a beast but not great with his feet. That last goal at Brentford has done him no favours. HOWEVER if he keeps the mistakes minimal I am a fan.

We've never really been good at stopping crosses under KM. We invite them. With Burgess and wolfy we managed most of them well. We have again this season Oshea near top of headers won. Burgess too. Greaves also before injury along with muric top claims. As long as you win them its all good. He does still leave the obvious claims tho at times which is always nerving to watch and seems a bit hesitant off his Line to claim the simplest of balls coming through bit hopefully time and confidence will help.

The ongoing Muric analysis on 18:31 - Nov 11 with 2543 views | Matt_Netherlands | As brilliant as he was yesterday, I’ll be honest and say I’m still not sold. His shot stopping has been really good and his one on one blocking / defending is incredible. But his errors have largely been self inflicted which does raise a a question mark for me. Trying to skin a man on the edge of the box against City, rolling the ball to a spurs player 30 yards out yesterday…. They seem like lapses of concentration as much as anything and that worries me. He makes some brilliant saves, but we need our back line to trust him and yesterday was the first time you really saw that be the case. Hopefully long may that continue, and he keeps improving, but we need everyone at the top of their game for 100+ minutes per week. For what it’s worth, I don’t think we’d be any points better off with Hladky overall.

We were understandably going long more often yesterday & then Muric doesn't have the ball at his feet so often. One trademark throw to the halfway line though. I still think this is a legitimate tactic given that the alternatives are trying to play out from the back or kicking it long, whereby we have a smaller chance of successfully contesting possession.
