Fried Bread 10:24 - Nov 17 with 4753 viewsChurchman

Mrs C was watching Strictly last night (zzz) and it was in Blackpool. Now Blackpool is just about the biggest sh£thole I’ve ever been to. Makes Yarmouth look like Venice. But when I went with my cricket chums last year there was a consolation.

We had a full English in a cafe and it was monster. Good quality bacon, sausages, beans, mushrooms, hash browns, black pudding (yuck), tomato, eggs, toast, tea and to make it even better …..a pile of fried bread.

I hadn’t had it in many years and there it sat, golden and glistening in the morning light. Perfectly fried, it was stonkingly good.

Now I know it’s a heart attack in bread form. In fact all of that breakfast was created by Satan, but dear me it wasn’t half good.

What is the forum’s view on the good old FB? The proper original version of thick sliced white bread fried in oil or lard until golden brown.

When I lived at home with my folks God Bless em,my father would do us all a fry up for breakfast and fry a bread roll cut into slices. That was most pleasant.

Does anyone know whether Blackpool is actually seen as the most prestigious ballroom venue or is it just the bbc overhyping it?

Apparently so:

"Dating back to 1894, The Blackpool Tower Ballroom is world-famous for its unique sprung dance floor and spectacular architecture and remains to this day, a destination for dance fans from across the globe."

"The ballroom regularly hosts World and all-England dance championships, and the Blackpool Junior Dance Festival has been held each year in the ballroom since 1964"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/63599101.amp

On the subject of fried bread,, mostly I have just toast, but occasionally I crave the heart attack in waiting that comes with fried bread. Generally, though, I prefer my fat to come in the form of chips rather than fried bread.

Upvoted, as baked beans are the best way to stick together the shards of fried bread when it shatters and make for a good texture combination

I'm a fan, but not something I'd make at home because:
a) you need a deep fat fryer to do it properly, and we don't have one
b) too much mess and clearing up for one element of a fry up if you don't have a deep fat fryer
c) best saved for when you go out for breakfast (which isn't that often, so I don't end up fat as a house)

You can make high quality fb in a frying pan - trust me on this.

1. Fry your smoked back bacon first.
2. Add sunflower oil (not too much but sufficient to soak in to a side)
3. Whop in the the thick sliced white and let it cook to golden brown.
4. Flip, add more oil as necessary, and repeat.

You will have happiness on a plate before you know it.

Remember to turn the hob off, leave the extractor fan off and open the door if weather allows. Just one pan to wash up, job done!

No white pudding! That's criminal.
Also don't like the look of the sausages and looks like I'd have to supply my own boxty

I love white pudding.

Overrated nonsense.

You think that is controversial? Wait until you hear that i'm not just talking about fried bread. I mean the whole damn fry up.

Give me a couple of slices of toast and a strong cup of tea any day over the shockingly overrated fry up you classless heathens,

I think you need to take a break from this denial gig. You know it makes sense. Just look at the happy faces in the picture in this thread. You would not see that if a plate of tofu and wilted salad was staring back at them or a measly couple of slices of toast - presumably wholemeal with imitation chemical low fat butter substitute and a smear of avocado. You would just see watery smiles and somebody on their phone searching for the nearest greasy spoon. 😀

Strong tea is a very good thing though!

Tried it at school and it was horrific. Mind you most catering was. I obviously know what it is and have avoided it since. Given I’ll try virtually anything (and have) I really ought to give it another go.

One thing I’ll avoid like the plague is Bavarian White Sausage. See attached. Truly appalling in every way and as guests we were obliged to eat them on more than one occasion.

Horrible, horrible, horrible!!!! Almost lets Bavaria down but luckily, with 365 breweries and Schnitzel ubiquitous, it is still safe to go there.

You have to eat the Bavarian horror before midday or it goes of. It’s literally boiled pork with a few herbs. The only way I could get through it was to escort it with a few glasses of beer. Because it’s a Bavarian tradition we had to oblige.

When they saw we’d ordered up the beer they thought it was a British tradition and felt obliged to whistle up beer too, even though they didn’t want it at 8am.

When they came over to the U.K. we introduced them to the full English - they absolutely loved it!

I like Bavaria a lot. Stunning part of the world and the people are great too (as is the beer). Had a lot of fun there.

You’re wrong about black pudding though. It’s delicious

Often had fried mash at breakfast as a child. Or previously boiled potatoes sliced and fried.

Still do both those things myself.

Fried mash with a fried egg on top - bacon/sausage with beans are optional but work well

I had a late lunch in Morrisons, Boroughbridge last Thursday and found a menu item I had not noticed before ~ a build your own all day Vegetarian breakfast of eight items for seven quid. So I built a plate full that contained sliced avocado and fried bread (plus veggie sausage, poached egg, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast and baked beans.) All good, especially the doorstep thick fried bread, and concentrating the egg and baked beans on separate pieces of toast meant I could leave the fried bread in its dignified and wonderful isolation. But ate it all too quickly.

Haha. I can see how bacon + croissant might work. I’m not a huge fan of the latter tbh. A proper C, still warm and fresh with butter is ok, but if they’re being served in hotels etc, by and large I’ll choose something else. Pain au chocolat are good, again if fresh. Not something I have generally being health conscious….

Talking of croissant and unusual pairings, back in the day when the Far Post Bar opened for lunch on weekdays, they used to serve the 'Bam-Bam' melt. A Tuna/mayo/cheese combo served on a croissant. It was absolutely delightful. TWTD.

I believe when Americans talk about a "grilled cheese" they often basically make a fried bread cheese sandwich (they put butter or mayonnaise on the outside of the sandwich as they grill it, which has the same effect as frying in fat more or less).

That's almost there, just missing black and white pudding, fried bread, boxty, a couple more sausages, and possibly a hash brown or 2.
But it's a fair attempt

I had proper, pan fried hash brown the first time I visited the USA in 1983. The modern, dehydrated version sold in triangles here are an absolute disgrace - pure, dull stodge.
