LGBTQ+ Player Recruitment 12:17 - Dec 3 with 3311 views | withyblue | Given recent events, I’m concerned about the club’s ability to recruit LGBTQ+ players for both the first team and youth teams. If ITFC is approaching gay players for our first team or academy, they might question whether the club captain will be welcoming, as his decision not to wear the armband doesn’t reflect a supportive attitude toward the LGBTQ+ community. If he chooses not to wear it, as is his personal right, he should take steps to show that, as our on-field leader and representative of the first team, he is genuinely welcoming and supportive of LGBTQ+ players. Otherwise our ability to attract gay players in the transfer market might be hindered, and any LGBTQ+ youth players coming through the academy might be tempted to look elsewhere.

LGBTQ+ Player Recruitment on 12:25 - Dec 3 with 2693 views | iamipswich | I don't want to seem ignorant and happy to be told otherwise but my initial thought would be that the pool of LGBTQ+ footballers (for the men's team) will be so small that it will not have an impact on our recruitment even if players did view us as unwelcoming. I do think it is a different narrative and slightly more pertinent point with regard to the women's team where there is a vastly higher percentage of players who fall under the LGBTQ+ bracket. But ultimately I don't think it would be an issue for either side. It's not as big a deal as some like to portray (not saying you). [Post edited 3 Dec 2024 12:27]

Considering that nearly 4% of UK men identify as LGB, it’s likely that a significant number of footballers are LGBTQ+. Sadly, many don’t feel able to come out publicly. Just because there aren’t a significant number of professional footballers who are openly LGBTQ+ doesn’t mean there isn’t a considerable number who remain in the closet and may be deterred from coming out. His refusal to wear the rainbow armband is a clue. We can only speculate the strength of his views, but at the very least we can conclude that he does not want to be seen to be supporting the rainbow flag and what it stands for. Personally I applaud him for standing up to his beliefs despite the backlash that he will know it will always get back from some people.
LGBTQ+ Player Recruitment on 12:43 - Dec 3 with 2432 views | bsw72 | I'm not concerned as I have nothing to base concerns on without making assumptions on topics we do not know enough about. Why are we looking to make so much out of someone not wearing some coloured fabric. As and when someone makes clear statements confirming without doubt Morsy is a homophone or the club does not welcome players from the LGBTQ community, then I'll worry. Personally more concerned about the gap left with Tuanzebe out . . . but let's not let football get in the way.

So if you're taking that as he is anti LGBTQ+ and saying that his views might help to recruit players with similar views, is that really the type of player you want at PR?

I don't think Morsy being a homophone need concern us. More see a potential problem elsewhere.

i don't doubt your logic, but i'm always surprised therefore that is seems really pretty rare for players to come out after they've left the game. peer pressure etc might stop them while they're playing, but why do very few seem to come out later?

Yeah that's an interesting question. I would speculate that although footballers might retire from playing professionally they often stay as part of the whole football eco-system, whether that's as a professional coach, coaching in the amateur game, punditry etc. So retiring from playing professionally doesn't often allow a true escape from the environment that made it so difficult to come out. On top of that, the older someone gets, the more complicated it can be to come out. They might have built up a family or social circle that’s always seen them as straight, so breaking that image can feel even harder than it would for someone younger. [Post edited 3 Dec 2024 13:24]

Do I want Morsy at the club - absolutely. One of the best captains we’ve ever had, and we’ve had plenty of good ones. Think you’d struggle to find a single town fan who doesn’t want him at our club.
LGBTQ+ Player Recruitment on 13:53 - Dec 3 with 1773 views | soupytwist | Matt Bloomfied, is a strong advocate of the LGBT community as this article from 2013 makes clear https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/24212072 If anyone's got him down as a possible successor to Kieran McKenna when the time comes, assuming a continued upwards trajectory then maybe this could be a factor. Anyone know whether Joey Barton's attitude on the rainbow laces campaign has changed from his stance described in the article?
