Yeah. He's definitely got something about the way he plays. Wonder if Szmodics preferred as a but more robust/physical for Prem demands

I think looking at it objectively, SS guarantees you goals (exactly how many remains to be been). JS was the definition of unpredictable, wasn't it Morsy that said his second touch was either a shot or a tackle?

Yes agree. Love Szmodics and he's been a brilliant signing. More of the finished article than Sarmiento.

He was miles behind Hutchinson, if we are honest. Its why, during his entire loan spell, he barely started any games. He was a good impact player, but wildly inconsistent with it. I hope he develops further but not sure hes a signing for a PL team right now as he wouldnt have enough impact. Feels like hes where he should be currently (admittedly Burnley not that inspiring)

Not from me you didn't. I bloody loved sarmiento. Was desperate we kept him. Do think we will look back in a few years and thing damn. But clarkes stats were impressive. Problem is we aren't playing him as he was so it'll take time for him to develop.

Does he fall into the brilliant category? It's probably just because he's done his best work away from home and not made any headlines at PR, and obviously I appreciate his goals especially the Spurs one, but I've often found myself wanting a bit more from him linking play and being creative. Always felt it would be an awkward signing in terms of finding his position.

His position is as a ten, playing off the front man. I understand injuries have caused issues with the left wing but, when he could play there, against Palace, he was benched.

The main negative of this season for me. We have some talent and yes I know KM knows best etc and no I'm not saying I know better. Etc etc But it really bugs me that we have An actual left winger. Being taught how to invert An actual town version of salah being used more centrally A 10 who likes to run behind the striker and score goals, being used as an inside forward A midfielder who can bang goals in from 30 yards. Never really being used in an advanced role to actually get into positions to do it A midfielder who I'd probably the best at spraying the ball around and pinging diags in Phillips, yet when played he's kept deep and restricted I probably wouldn't care if we weren't sitting with 1 win all season. But we've got a host of talent that I don't think we are using the right way. So it's not really a surprise we are being competitive as they are all solid players. But also not surprising we aren't winning as they aren't being played in their best positions. Its all about development. Which is fine next year.

It's good to remember the best bits, and there were 2 or 3 real highs but on the whole I thought he was all over the place. He seemed to lack a sense of position or a decent first touch. Omari was and is completely different class.

Worth remembering Omari started only 20 games last season, including the last 9 (in which he played every minute). His progression from when he first arrived and those sub appearances at Sunderland and QPR has been amazing.

And Szmodics is MUCH better too. For all his cult status, Sarmiento struggled to make his mark in the same way Hutch did. He’d have been a longer punt and I’m not sure we’re in a position to make those unless they’re cheap. [Post edited 7 Dec 2024 10:15]

Yep, phenomenal development but we saw what he could do in the autumn and then he had a spell out with KM developing the rest of his game and he came back firing. We didn’t really see that progression with Sarmiento.

Just shows how unpredictable football is . Clarke does not play in the position that he was successful in at Sunderland as this restrictions Davis .

What I would say about Sarmiento was that his anticipation was clearly on another level. He always seemed to get to the ball a fraction ahead of an opponent, but it happened so often that it was clearly down to ability and better reading of the game than others. The goal v Southampton is probably a high profile example of that too- he had fallen over got up, touched it and poked it towards goal before anyone else had reacted.

This is a good point and it's something I've seen Jack Clarke struggle with so far this season. Sometimes it looks obvious where a ball is likely to go from a toe-poked tackle or a flick on, but he always seems to be on his heels. An area for improvement for sure, but he's more than capable. Sarmiento is electric over the first yard or so, as you said.

Tend to agree with that, having never really considered it before, it feels like defenders are anticipating a step ahead of him.

Agree with all this. The other thing about JS was that he loved a tackle - and we really need our front players to support the defensive cause as well as the attacking side of the game. We saw this on Sunday when Johnson was asked to go it alone - it didn't end well. It is also worth noting that he was not here as long as Omari - I always thought that his trajectory could have been as strong as Omari's, but we will never know.
