This assassination in New York 12:26 - Dec 8 with 3014 views | Zx1988 | Don't think I've seen it mentioned/discussed on here yet, but apologies if I'm going over old ground. Reaction of the authorities has been rather eye-opening, albeit saddeningly unsurprising. If only they'd put in this sort of effort when the victim is just an ordinary Joe such as you and I, or any one of the other countless murders that happen in the US on a daily basis. No different to Matthew Perry, I suppose. I've never seen manslaughter prosecutions as a result of 'normal' drug-related deaths. Then again, I suppose the other insurance CEOs need to be reassured that he won't be coming after them next... [Post edited 8 Dec 2024 12:29]

This assassination in New York on 13:07 - Dec 8 with 2882 views | chicoazul | Interesting to see an (presumably) American making a political assassination. I guess gun violence is ok sometimes especially since Trump was shot too. Tens of thousands of unsolved murders in New York City alone in the last decades. Don’t imagine this one will remain unsolved for long. You can’t come for the elites.

I'll be interested to see how it all pans out. Bits and pieces (the silencer in particular) point towards the assassin at least knowing what he was doing and, potentially, being a professional. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he never gets caught.

...and that told me. Chap arrested in Pennsylvania this evening in relation to the shooting. I wonder if he'll make it to trial, and be given his moment in the spotlight?

Police previously said they didn't believe it was a professional hit. One of the things was that the bullets had slogans carved on to the casing. It has touched a nerve with a lot of Americans. Lots of Mick taking and not much sympathy for the victim. People even making banners about it, seemingly in support.

There's lots of reasons why some Americans don't shed a tear over a medical insurance CEO having a post existing condition

It's basically the slogan from the bullets: "deny, defend, depose" next to a picture of a gun, being hung from an overpass.

There was a good article on the BBC last week about the medical insurance industry in the US. Sounds like a nightmare if you're a patient and need treatment. Imagine having a serious illness like cancer and besides the worry about that, you have to haggle to get your medical bills paid. Made me feel even more thankful for our NHS [Post edited 9 Dec 2024 20:56]

I have family there, some of whom joined the armed forces just for the family medical cover. It's insane

Ive probably related this before, so apologies if I have. I was in America skiing just before Covid and got chatting to an American. He was clearly very wealthy (the gear, watch etc) and it turned out he had a very good career, been successful etc etc. he asked me what I did and I told him I’d just retired. Politely asking how old I was, it turned out he was just a year or so older than me. He was amazed I was able to pack it in. I said to him that surely he could if he wished. He said that he’d have to work to 65 because of medical insurance. His work provided cover but the retirement policy would not kick in to 65 and costs being as they were (utterly crippling) he just couldn’t take the risk of a ‘gap’ for him or his family. I was asked about U.K. provision so I explained and he was amazed and expressed how lucky we were to have the NHS. He was right. We are and the principles of the Welfare State/NHS are sound. I know that the wealthy in this country was it privatised/scrapped and use every excuse in the book to do it. But when it really comes down to it they don’t want to pay towards it and couldn’t give a stuff about the majority that need it. It needs supporting. It’s the ultimate mark of a civilised country. That the Trumps, Sunaks and Reece Mogg of this world are not interested just tells you how uncivilised they are.

He wanted to be caught. He had a YouTube countdown video that went live the day before yesterday called “the truth” with his name, been taken down now. He’s a Batman villain.

As to whether he is a 'classic' villain, let's wait and see how the court case goes.

This assassination in New York on 11:09 - Dec 10 with 1981 views | redrickstuhaart | Presumably you have access to, and have reviewed in detail how all the murders and manslaughter cases are dealt with so you can compare the treatment of ones involving well known people, with the thousands of others. Or could it be that its only high profile ones you know about and have no basis fir comparison other than 'what you reckon'? You say ypuve never seen manslaughter charges in non celebrity drug deaths. How many have you reviewd?

This assassination in New York on 19:56 - Dec 10 with 1560 views | Xatticus | I've personally always been dumbfounded that this sort of thing doesn't happen frequently. There are many disaffected individuals with access to firearms in this country, but they always shoot one another instead of the architects of their misery. Interesting that he was captured on the same day that the charges against Daniel Penny were dismissed. You almost have to get caught in the act of killing a homeless person to end up getting arrested as there just isn't much interest in an investigation otherwise. I greatly envy your NHS. Don't give an inch of ground to anyone that suggests privatizing your healthcare system.

What do ‘deny,’ ‘defend’ and ‘depose’ Mean? The three words echo a common phrase—“delay, deny, defend”—describing allegations leveled at insurers who avoid paying claims, the Associated Press reported Thursday. The phrase, adopted by critics of the healthcare industry, refers to the ways insurance companies “delay paying claims, deny valid claims in whole or part, and defend their actions by forcing claimants to enter litigation,” according to “Delay Deny Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It,” a book on the topic published in 2010. The book claims to be “an expose of insurance injustice and a plan for consumers and lawmakers to fight back.” It was written by Jay Feinman, an expert in insurance law and professor emeritus at Rutgers University who set out to show companies denying valid claims was “the result of an increasing and systematic focus on maximizing profits by major companies such as Allstate and State Farm.”

I cant speak for American stuff. Their medical insurance system is probably awful. Generally, though, insurance companies save money by doing commercial deals to end claims as soon as possible rather than dragging them through legal processes and getting clobbered with costs. Most actively expect, of their advisers and lawyers, an agressively commercial approach based on swift resolution.

The other thing those richest people don't realise is that an effective NHS actually benefits them as well. If those they know and care about, those who work for them and provide services for them, and everyone else get looked after, their own life benefits too. It is crazy that people accept the idea that we cannot afford the NHS. We cannot afford to lose it!

Correct- the Tories don’t even understand capitalism, they are more interested in Russian style cronyism. As you say, improperly funding the NHS has led us to become the ‘sick man of Europe’ now with countless economically inactive people on long term sickness, or awaiting operations. I suspect funding an effective mental health system could get many back to work. And before we get to gloaty about our friends over the pond, such is the backlog and waiting lists for some of the NHS, I know a few people who’ve delayed retirement, or stayed on ‘consulting’ so as not to lose private health cover through work. We even fair badly at cancer survival rates compared to some of our European peers. Yes the NHS is a fantastic thing, but as it stands is worse than what many Europeans have (that’s not a slight on the staff, I have family working for the NHS). Starmer has one hell of a job on his hands.
