SPOTY 19:43 - Dec 17 with 4439 views | Woolfenthen | Used to quite enjoy this but it really is now as dull as dishwasher probably down to the lack of real "personalities" as much as the now woke element. Gone much the same way as Football Focus where the old tried and tested format worked and didn't need fixing. BBC really has gone down the pan and needs a rethink.

I'd argue a true sportsman gives everything he needs to win. If you watched him at paris he failed twice and then pulled it out of the bag on his third attempt

Are you saying she didn't deserve to win because you're not entirely sure who she is? Or just telling us all that your knowledge of sports in general isn't great?

Anyone who watched the Olympics should know who Alex Yee is too. Sarah Storey is a bit of a legend, but para sport doesn’t get the same coverage. It’s a really good shortlist, plus a darts player

That is 100% the correct answer - that crew was awesome and that is the blue ribbon event in the whole Olympics (forget the 100m etc) In fact the team award was made to the Wigan Rugby League team

its always bugged me more in Olympic years, that the athletics medal winners were always near guaranteed to win it, largely because the BBC has always treated athletics, literally the first ever SPOTY award was limited only to athletics, & the Olympics very differently to other sports. and its daft to think if she'd finished 2nd in just one race, she likely wouldnt have been on the shortlist at all and a teenager playing a pub game, who isnt even the world champion, because they left that guy off the shortlist for some crazy reason, would have won. followed by a cricketer who didnt even score the most runs ever in his career this year, he just passed the most runs total scored by an England cricketer this year, and we didnt win any significant test series with it, ooh but he played in the Hundred didnt he...but so what happens next year when he extends the record again? like every game of test cricket he extends the record, so is he back on the short list again every year till he retires because he keeps breaking that record ? so are they really the best British sporting excellence achievements that turned up this year ? because that seems a pretty bare cupboard doesnt it a whole year of sport, across the whole breadth of sport and that was it. certainly of the 6 their "esteemed" panel picked, Keely was the most deserving winner for sure, shes probably the top 800m runner in the world currently. but I think it would have been better to have 5 others on the list with her that made it more about whose was the best sporting excellence achievement this year, and feel like a real competition between them. plus I really hope the Beeb didnt fly out 3 trophies to New Zealand just in case...cough...fix...cough...

I do agree to an extent. The award needs to go to people who are the best in the world at a sport with global coverage - which is why Keely was a great choice. But it is important to appreciate that for many of these athletes it is a four year cycle to the Olympics (in fact I have heard that for some athletes they are looking 8 years out) - everything that goes before relates to that one event in this one year - and that goes for all those that they are competing against as well - so it makes sense that they are more prevalent in the final list in this particular year. The luke Llittler one annoys me more than most - and as for the young SPOTY final three - really? That is the best we have?

agree, it's cynical, but it doesn't mean that he's not a fantastic sportsman. like arguing that usain bolt was a "conman" because he slowed down at the end to showboat!

I’d forgotten that! How true! I hadn’t seen the programme for a few years and tbh I enjoyed it. I thought the winner Keely deserved it. Her or Alex Yee. I hadn’t heard of the darts player and was roundly mocked by Mrs C who had, but I obviously knew the others. I thought the team thing might go to the rowers, as suggested, but then Rugby League isn’t my thing. The foreign award. I thought that French swimmer Marchand was a cert, but there it is. Cavendish? Can’t argue with that. Overall, it was quite entertaining and well presented. Disappointed ITFC didn’t get something. Oh well. Didn’t it used to be on a Sunday night?

It sounds like Wigan had a ridiculously good year, so that’s probably a reasonable award. Thevrowers were rather good though, agreed.
