Things that players get away with that they shouldnt 15:41 - Dec 18 with 1750 viewsGeoffSentence

Defenders bear hugging attackers. All defenders do it and it happens all the time in every game, but unless they do something blatant like pick them up and flip them over their heads they always get away with it. No-one even argues the point not even the attackers who have ben grappled which seems bizaare to me as this is evidently foul play.

Obstruction is another one that is never blown up for either. Ben Johnson got away with a really blatant one recently, against Bournemouth I think. He and an attacker both racing after a through ball, neither of them in control of the ball, BJ jut looked over his shoulder to see where the attacker was going and stepped across to block him. He wasnt shielding the ball , neither player was near it, just made sure the other player could not run after it.

At the risk of sounding like Will from Inbetweeners, if they aren't enforced the rules are redundant.

They certainly might as well get rid of obstruction, ive never seen it enforced.

It's worse on corners and free-kicks. An attacker is not allowed to run through a defender and a defender is not allowed to pretend he is the Angel of the North with his arms out to block a run, but they do. A quick fix would be to allow referees to award free-kicks or penalties or at least cards against offenders even if the ball isn't yet in play. Thank god Wolves forgot to do it on Saturday. Our worst offender btw is Leif Davis.

Obstruction used to be given quite often way back when I was playing and watching as a lad/teenager. Including indirect free kicks in the box. Agreed, I can’t remember the last time I saw it given.

What annoys me about the defenders at set pieces is how inconsistent decisions in the box are. You can manhandled at set pieces no problem, but breath on a player in a one-on-one in open play and it’s often a pen.

Blatant assaults in the penalty area.

Seems to me that players are allowed to use 2 hands and just push a player out of the way in the penalty area.

Foul on Chaplin v Leicester, Davis saturday, the wolves attacker v West Ham last week…
All blatant fouls

Blatant two-handed push in the back of an opposing player when they are lining up for a header or to receive the ball.
Surely that can't be acceptable, but it either goes unnoticed or unpunished consitently.

I noticed this very much last Sat, every single time a Wolves player was near enough, they would give a 2 handed push

I can't begin to understand how you can control or play the ball when your balance is being ruined every single time and the ref ignored it

I'm so glad Wolves lost.....

1) Obstruction is bang on. Needs to be enforced or removed.
2) Calling linesman C**ts, etc and general swearing at officials which seems to go unpunished in the pro game but clamped down on heavily at grass roots level.
3) Time wasting. It is a stain on the game and too many dark arts that players get away with

Gk rolling the ball to a cb who then kicks it to the gk who then kicks it back.

It's just daft.

Go back to the old rule of no players in the box allowed.

a niche perspective

I can see myself taking this down the path of "what grinds my gears in modern football" lol:

- Cheating is accepted nowadays as "gamesmanship" or "game management". I especially hate it when our players do it, which I know is my false piety, that it's not "the Ipswich way" when there is no such thing in reality.

Quick example: I was in the Forest home end. In the first half, Delap dances into the box before his run fizzles out, and he goes down half-heartedly, appealing for a penalty by holding his shin. Nothing doing. He sees Forest breaking, so all of a sudden, he starts holding the back of his head. The referee spots it and stops play. Liam pops up fine and dandy. It's just cheap.

- My other one which isn't illegal but damn should be is players goading opposition fans. Stupid and dangerous. I always cite the idiot who punched Grealish in the Brum derby years ago, and he hadn't done anything to provoke it. I felt Szmodics was quite bad for this last season but doesn't seem to do it this year, which I am sure even he will admit has not impacted the enjoyment of celebrating.

Hold my hands up that I am sure I am wrong, don't get modern football, have "John Inverdale" glasses for a time that never existed, and am just a grumpy old man. But I don't like it I tells ya!

My understanding is that all the hugging, shirt pulling, stepping on toes etc. has to cease when the Ref blows his whistle to commence play.
If it's still going on when the ball is 'in play' then it's a foul.
The Six of one and half a dozen of the other rule means the Ref usually ignores it.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?
