Is he still one to consider an approach or has he found his club / level?

He's playing a league below his level and may step up further than that in the long run

I would suspect the fee Brum paid for him will put any would be suitors off him including ourselves

We need a player who is ready to play PL level immediately, whoever that is

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

It’s not that he’s found his level for me but more that we are not in the position to chance whether he’s good enough for the Premier League right now. Because that’s where we’re at now. We need players who can come in and make an impact immediately.

If we'd signed him last season as was rumoured briefly, I wonder if he would've made the step up to Prem level

Birmingham paid £15m for him in the summer, the same as we paid for Liam Delap.

So regardless of if we think he could step up [and he is obviously one we liked and could well have been in for] he’s not going to be for sale

He also isn’t in the mould of what we really need now in the Prem. Delap and Hirst are very different propositions as are other players we’ve been linked to like Ioannidis.

He’s not good enough for what we will need. He’s Birmingham’s project now and in a few years we’ll see what he becomes.

I agree and disagree but mostly agree haha. Here me out. Stansfield can play 9 but he's also really versatile which would be useful. He can play any of the 3 .ost prominent roles in attack for us which also makes any price paid better value then say a pure centre forward. You could make the argument that with only one role in our system as main striker this is actually really useful.

The flip side is if both Hirst and Delap out (or one) it limits us not having a specialist 9. (Where is agree).

On balance I think he'd be a good signing and one that we could keep if we dropped (unlike Delap). But it won't happen. £15 million paid by Birmingham who are am itious and going up. They won't risk that for anything approaching sensible money.

Evan Ferguson would be most logical signing on loan. Issue is would he come with Delaps form....

We will never know what the plan was had we have signed Ionidis, would Delap have just played on the wing instead, would we have rotated them more etc etc

I think we would certainly have loaned Al-Hamadi out to the Championship

I always thought we were signing Delap as an alternative to Burns but that never really transpired

I presume Birmingham got around FFP by giving Stansfield a 7 year contract, enabling them to amortise the fee over that period.

Delap running at a full back for 90mins with his power would (I think) have brought us more success as a team than his individual goals have.
Hes an upgrade (by a few levels) on Burns in every aspect of his game.

He certainly has that element of his game which full backs would struggle with

I often think some of the positions where we have with Delap are down the wings, even though he is playing as a number 9

I'd like to see it tried and see if there's any benefit for it. We haven't been as potent down the flanks, particularly the right as you would like and it's fairly important to the way McKenna wants us to play

Interestingly we almost got Reiss Nelson before Fulham stole in there in the last minute so the wing is an area McKenna was looking to strengthen in also

Similar to J Clarke, Stansfield would struggle against the colossus defenders in the Prem. Too lightweight as a forward especially if we play 1 up. We need a more physical presence up top

I’m not sure FFP would be much of an issue in League 1 because from recollection the cap is a percentage of turnover, which includes capital injections. The Birmingham owners are minted and can just pump cash into the Club…a bit like we did (albeit to a much lower level)

Yeah they're following a similar strategy but not very intelligently. Their revenue will be a lot higher than ours, but once they're in the Championship, FFP will calculate their three year rolling loss period, including this season.

So essentially they've spent £15m on a player to add to a team that would have been promoted anyway, which will damage their ability to make transfers once they're up next year. They need to get promoted twice for the Stansfield transfer to be considered good value.
