Just wondering if the club will introduce digital season tickets that you scan on your phone.

I asked Mark Ashton about this last season and he said not this year but hopefully will be in place to introduce next season

Makes my blood boil this.

People should have a choice, but basically you can't have a life without a smartphone.

Leicester give season ticket holders a choice but you have to pay a £25 fee to get a physical season ticket card!

Wednesday offer a choice but to have a physical card there is an additional charge, which I think is fair to cover cost and also to try and discourage in interests of production costs and sustainability

So it's fair to charge more for something we already get as part of a season ticket for free. More corporate bullshine.

I think Leicester give the ‘sustainability’ bullshît reason as well tbh.

All a load of rubbish that people keep falling for.

I wonder if our turnstiles support RFID. That should be the way forward - far more efficient than scanning a code (paper or screen). Just walk through the turnstile with your RFID key on your person.

Works from either a smartphone, or a smart card that would only ever need to be issued once (or a tag for that matter). Single games or season tickets could be loaded onto it. The membership card could also go this route, as another option for storing your membership and tickets on. Many ways to offer RFID enabled ‘access’ keys, sustainable and low to zero cost to provide.

About time, for away games there's a £2 postage premium which seems totally unnecessary.

How is it rubbish though? the cost of manufacturing a plastic card when you don't need to is obviously less sustainable

youve seen the start of our home games with the propane flames and the fireworks right ?

I presume that happens at every Premiership ground for every game ?

how much propane and fireworks per season do you think that adds up to ?

or how about having the floodlights on in the daylight, just because of tv, with the 90 odd camera positions that all require power too, even though the same 4-5 camera angles only ever seem to be shown.

yes lets talk about the sustainibility shall we.

so you dont produce a new one every season for ticket holders who renew, lets say you just pay £5 the first time it gets printed, you lose it or it breaks you pay £5 to replace it.

see its quite easy to come up with more sustainable practices without resorting to insisting every has a 300-400 quid mobile phone whose raw materials include gold, cobalt, lithium, and other heavy metals that require energy-intensive mining which is environmentally polluting.

that get built in mega factories where over 85% of a phones carbon footprint in its lifetime is in the production process.

which then operate only via access to global datacentres that constitute 1% of the global demand for electricity.

oh and theyve got built in obsolescence after 4 years average use because the batteries fail, and the manufacturer stops supporting them for critical software upgrades, because they want you to keep buying new phones, leaving you with a technological brick that ends up in landfill, where the lithium batteries catch fire and the heavy metals in the phone pollute the environment.

Whilst I don’t disagree that other areas deserve reviewing, and the carbon footprint / ESG considered, any argument that tries to discourage a green initiate just because other areas aren’t immediately being addressed is illogical. Every little helps move the dial in a better direction.

pretty sure there would be tolerances for people who physically cannot have a digital card. But let's be honest, pretty much everyone has a phone, and a smart one at that, so that has already been produced so adding a digital card makes no difference.

But completely agree that mobile phones need to be made in a way that they are not obsolete after a few years, but likewise people need to realise they don't need to have the best and newest version out there. God knows how old my phone is, it's a hand me down. Its an apple smart phone but isn't the latest or best - but it manages to send a watsapp, surf the net and make a call.

I think the Club needs to tread quite carefully with this because it’s easy to assume that everyone has a smart phone. Given the age demographic of some of our ST holders I’d query that and if I were the Club I’d be running some surveys beforehand just to check because raising an additional charge that impacts potentially largely on the elderly feels like age discrimination to me

I'll add to that, the plastic bottles of beer shipped in for every game, let's ban that. Nope let's ban a piece of plastic that's reused for every game. It's total BS, going with a digital only season ticket and claiming it's better for the environment.

With the amount of energy the Internet uses and thus smart phones, if the PL was really committed to sustainability they would ban all smart phones from football grounds.

You're point about the propane flames/fireworks is another good example

It's all BS, if it's all about making money then they will always ignore the environment / sustainability

Well said.

I'm 52 so probably don't fall into the age discrimination category, but I'd still prefer a physical card. I don't want the hassle of ensuring my phone is charged. I leave quite for home games but don't bother with a power bank. If my phone runs out of juice so be it.

I have to have a digital season ticket at Man U (yes I know but I live nearby and my son’s a supporter - we go together).
It works well and no real problems at the turnstiles.
One of the key reasons for introducing them is that it makes it easier for the club to control resales/touting. If I’m not using it I can transfer it to a United member or resell it to the club. It was introduced this season and appears to have reduced the touting that went on around the ground.
On the other hand for my returned ticket I get a face value credit ( pensioner concession therefore £20) but the club might turn around and sell it for a much higher single ticket price.

Edit: They also make it easier for the club to monitor no shows, resulting in empty seats and reduced sales at the bars and club shop. At United if you no show too many times in a season you lose the right to renew.
