Happy 60th birthday to David Linighan on 08:49 - Jan 9 with 3292 views | Churchman | David according to Pride of Anglia made 325 appearances for us, was club Captain and professionally played over 600 games with various clubs. Another non nonsense centre half. He was not as good as his brother but good enough to play in the first Premier League for three seasons for us, eight overall. He was a solid player. Good in the tackle and in the air. He didn’t fiddle about getting the ball away. Hoof! Not one to be messed with either. So much so that I remember him flooring somebody with one of the best punches I’ve seen in a football field. It might have been the game linked below against Man City which is an interesting read if only for Dozzell sending a player to hospital and scoring the winner! https://www.citytilidie.com/latest/ipswich-away-198889/ It was rumoured at the time that David enjoyed a beer before the game but I don’t know if that’s true. Didn’t stop him anyway. Oh how the game has changed. Linighan was Captain of the 92 2nd Division winning side and our team in the inaugural Premier League. He rarely gets a mention, but he’s one of the better Centre Halves we’ve had during my time watching them and never let anybody down. Happy birthday David.

David 'Donkey' Linighan May have been our captain but Brian Gayle was the cultured centre half Hoof! indeed

Hunter, Beattie, Butcher and Osman he wasn’t, but appearance totals under three different managers suggest he wasn’t the worst. I was lucky enough to see quite a number of his games - you knew what you were going to get with him. Edit: yes, Gayle was a good player. Only made 58 appearances 90-91. Middle name Wilbert. Bet he never uses it! [Post edited 9 Jan 9:12]

"Biff! Pow! Splat!" Summed him up perfectly. You did not mess with him. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Happy 60th birthday to David Linighan on 09:16 - Jan 9 with 3165 views | Blueschev | I was only thinking about Linighan the other day and how he doesn't get the recognition he deserves as captain of the 92 champions. I got a delightful coffee mug for Christmas with various player / manager names laid out on a London tube style map, he's not even there. It doesn't seem right, he achieved far more than Chambers or DeVos.

And yet with 112 appearances he has played in the PL for us more than any other player. [Post edited 9 Jan 10:35]

He was never fast but he lost a bit of sharpness after a serious injury (cruciate?) in Spring 1992. He wasn't really good enough for the Premier League as a result even in that early incarnation. Burley playing a back four of him, an ill Wark, Yallop and Thompson at Old Trafford was never going to go well though. Absolute pisshead too.

He wasn’t known as Alky for nothing. The Old Trafford game? No, not the best (ahem), but DL was in the team that beat them 3-2 earlier in the season! Realistically, no. He wasn’t as good as his brother or to be a good PL player. He was a really good Div 2/Championship level. I liked him. Always looked ready to batter somebody. [Post edited 9 Jan 12:02]

Happy 60th birthday to David Linighan on 10:33 - Jan 9 with 2992 views | TrumptonBlue | He wasn't always a fan favourite exactly. There were loud cheers from the stands when he was substituted against Hull at PR towards the end of 1989/90. He didn't play again that season and looked to be on his way out. Not many would have been too bothered had he departed. But then Duncan was sacked and he was quickly rehabilitated under Lyall.
Happy 60th birthday to David Linighan on 10:34 - Jan 9 with 2990 views | Asa | In terms of any Town players achievements versus recognition he must be the most criminally underrated we've ever had! Morsy and Holland are rightly revered. Linighan was captain of a team that went one better and won the title. He then played a load for us in the Premier League, some of that being when we were up and around the top 6. Not the finest player ever to play for us, a proper old school no nonsense centre half, but my goodness he's talked about fair less than he deserves.

It was a criticism of Burley's optimistic naivety rather than any of those who played at OT but good point on the 3-2.

Does anyone remember Chelsea captain John Terry became infamous for coming out with the team for the trophy celebrations post game wearing a full playing strip, even though he was out long term injured? Well David Linighan did it long before that in ‘92 when he collected the second division trophy (along with Jason Dozzell) wearing the full home kit at the Brighton game having also been out with a long term injury.

I remember him leading the team out for the presentation, although he missed the last 8 games of that season with a serious knee injury. Never thought anything of it, he was our captain and the right man to lift a division winners trophy. Still is the last to do that. He only missed a few games each season since he joined from Shrewsbury for a massive record fee of £300,000. Definitely one of John Duncan's better signings.
| I was there when McKenna's ITFC won in the Premier League at Home. Fewest home wins and equal most home defeats in a season in ITFC history. |

In terms of value for money, I would certainly put him and definitely Neil Thompson in that category.
