One thing I've noticed in recent games is strategically placed vehicles and barriers, which I am not sure were there earlier in the season.

I did wonder if this were a response to the recent attack in Germany, or maybe it's just crowd control.

In addition, they appear to hold back much further the traffic on to way to the station but maybe this has been going on longer.

As regards, the queues, it's just people (like me) turning up too late, and behind SBR not helped by people going in two directions.

There's probably something in that.

Without wishing to appear glib, I would have imagined that there may have been an element of 'pah, it wouldn't happen in Magdeburg', in the same way that a minority decry the additional security as not being needed in somewhere like Ipswich.

You'd have a point if the security were actually searching people properly.

It is strange that all the additional obstructions first introduced earlier in the season at the entrance to SAR Way by the Club shop are not considered necessary for when the crowd leaves the ground. That short period there's more people about for a "Hostile Vehicle" to attack.

Yeah, ridiculous.

They spent the Chelsea game filming the crowd.

Ipswich v Brighton on a Thursday night is about as docile as it gets. All very odd.

I’d like to know what the hand held scanners actually detect, or when they (the stewards) act and apply a more in depth search.

I'd like to know whether all the security people, stewards, and traffic management people etc are scanned, frisked and body searched too to discount a terrorist or other evil doer infiltrating.

The Police vans parked in a sort of zig zag formation on Portman Road past the Sir Alf statue have been like that for a while but like you I did think there were a few more of them yesterday. Maybe because its January and they all put their hand up for time and a half.

Going by the email they sent out on Wednesday I assume it was a very small backpack, size less than A4.

Nope. standard size

It all seems very hit and miss.

On Sunday the scanner went off, and I was asked to empty my pockets in order to prove my assertions that it was my phone, wallet, and car key.

Last night the same happened and my description of the items was accepted at face value.

One has to wonder whether the security firm actually has the capacity to do a job of this size to the required standard. I can't imagine that most of the staff there will be carrying out security work on other days of the week, hence the general nonchalance towards doing their job properly.

Same happened to me. Scanner went off on my coat pocket. I said "I have nothing in there" and they just waved me through.

To properly check everyone thoroughly would be a complete nightmare and not practical. It is simply a box ticking process. If someone really wanted to commit a terrorist attack at PR, they certainly could. These 'checks' wouldn't stop that.

Providing a lot of work and money for the "security" company owners etc, overtime for the police. Not only the football people raking it in from the PL.

The extra checks appeared after the Everton game I think. Evening kick offs always seem to have longer queues probably due to supporters work times mean more people turn up within a smaller time frame than for a afternoon game. A 7:30 kick off just makes this even worse, but broadcasters do not care about the supporters attending games, like the Man Utd game, Wednesday night 20:00 means a 22:00 match finish and the last train is 20:15, so it is a 4 1/2 hour drive home and hope there are no overnight roadworks.

The Man U game was always scheduled to be midweek, not because of TV.

And the word on the street is it's moving to Thursday night.

Security staff know it's over the top and pointless, I'd be too embarrassed to do it, but some people need to earn an income somehow.

Perhaps the most bizarre thing is the security guards on the edge of the penalty box at half time facing the crowd, although this doesn't happen at every game.

They are presumably deployed there because they have nothing else to do.

Someone picked up on it elsewhere as well. My best guess is that they're protecting the goals, lest anyone decide that they fancy padlocking themselves to the equipment in order to make a point.

Slightly separate point maybe, but also amazes me people are allowed to take vapes into the ground. If one of those was thrown with a bit of pace and it hit you, you would know about it. Seen morons throw vapes at players 3 times this season. Twice last night (O'Shea had a proper go at the lower Cobbold) and once against Man Utd when Rashford scored.

I had the scanner go off once, the security guy said "Phone?", I said, "Yep", and he waved me through without actually having to prove it. Brilliant security!

Reminds me of the visa form you have to fill in to visit the States, where there's a tick box that basically says "Are you a terrorist?"

….new queuing system in Churchman’s last night.

It was total gridlock getting past the memorial garden and towards the turnstiles.

They really need to sort it out, it’s gonna cause issues with the away fans being held on that corner too.

Chaos.

That was there for the Bristol cup match too. Barricades funneling the crowd into a tiny space. Why did they suddenly decide that preventing people from getting in is a good solution? And there are not nearly enough turnstiles either.
We were selling out home matches most of last season and there was no problem. Now they have introduced one.

Not enough turnstiles for a full ground was an easily foreseeable consequence from the new "security" measures however the mentality of those responsible is to blame the customers for not arriving earlier.

People should arrive earlier, though.

I can't think of any other event held at a sold-out venue of the size of Portman Road where people expect to arrive en-masse about 15-20 minutes before the start of the event, and be able to be in their seat on time.

I can't imagine you'd rock up to Wembley Arena for a concert so close to the start of the performance.

I had a backpack and plastic bag (my son missed his train and had to come to the game with his gym kit and school bag) and I got waved through with no search at all. Ten minutes before kick off they give up. It's daft and inconsistent.
