Haaland new contract 18:37 - Jan 17 with 2520 views | Cheltenham_Blue | Assuming Man City still pay via PAYE as they did with Carlos Tevez then Haarland will be paying around £1m a month in tax and NI and taking home around £1.15m

More than likely. But when Tevez's payslip was published, they were paying tax via PAYE. Sure it's moved on now to benefit footballers. Else they'd all still be playing for Monaco.

Haaland new contract on 18:48 - Jan 17 with 2394 views | MK1 | Back in my days, the club paid your tax. We're not talking the stupid amounts we are today though. According to some, the club have taken all the selling clauses out of his contract. One said that they have done this, so that WHEN THEY ARE RELEGATED, they can still demand a massive fee. They thought the selling clause was around the £100M mark, but now they will still be able to demand about double that. I don't see Man City getting much of a punishment, but it would be nice if true.

Not really. No club can afford £200m plus £500k per week. They are confident they won't go down.

I agree with them not going down, but at least 2 clubs can afford him.

Nah. No ones in the market at that level now. Real Madrid are spent up after Mbappe, and prefer to get players out of contract. PSG dont buy galacticos anymore. [Post edited 17 Jan 18:55]

Whilst this is probably true, can you imagine spending £1.15M every month? There is a point at which you have to ask why bother with avoiding paying it? What else are you going to do with the extra £500K or whatever you can avoid every month?

Real are going to sell off a lot of their more expensive fringe players. Their fees and wages would cover Haaland. PSG will follow suit. They still have an abundance of £30-40M players they can get rid of. Bayern are also planning quite a big clear out. Not saying he will move in the summer, but if the PL grow a pair and relegate them, they would have a few willing to pay silly money for him.

Interesting footnote to see that he has ordered 2 planes to the value of over 2 million quid.
Haaland new contract on 20:55 - Jan 17 with 1923 views | Swansea_Blue | And that’s just the tip of the ice berg. On his old contract it was thought he could more than double is base salary with performance bonuses and he’s got sponsorship deals eorth many tens of millions (over several years). I’m sure grass roots will feel some of that trickling down any time soon.

No. IR35 is the specific legislation against this. Personal service companies are becoming rarer. Virtually all footballers are employees with employment contracts and will pay paye and ni.

and yet I dont doubt for a minute someone being paid 1million quid per week, by a company backed by a nation state, can afford a much better tax lawyer than HMRC, and absolutely be paying the least amount of tax & ni on their earnings they can get away with. the Daily Mirror ran a story early last year that over 300 premier league players were under investigation for tax avoidance, often using image rights owned by holding companies as the means to manage their big money deals, I suspect Haalands image rights are very expensive to get. https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/premier-league-players-investigated

I'm assuming he owns a company that handles his sponsorships, endorsments and image rights That is where a bit of creative accounting could help to boost his monthly income and get him a tiny bit futher away from the breadline

They won’t. Literally no way of achieving that nowadays for footballers and those in the PL are taxed and pay national insurance as normal.

I don't disagree. However, HMRC if proven correct by their own legislation will be entitled to fines, penalties and interest. It's high stakes stuff and the advisors know the walls have already closed in. Loads of high paid BBC talent have been taken to court on this. HMRC will view this as slam dunk so any flouting would be mercilessly pursued. https://www.boblethaby.co.uk/2022/04/you-wont-see-the-taxman-getting-angry-at-fo [Post edited 18 Jan 14:01]
