Already getting nervous about the Southampton game 07:48 - Jan 23 with 3844 viewsDubtractor

It's such a huge and important game for our season.

I don't usually like to overstate the importance of individual games, or use phrases like 'must win', but that one is pretty close to it.

Conversely I'm not remotely bothered by Liverpool, nor was I by man city. Those games are pretty much pointless as they are such a mismatch - I'm sure lots on here would take a 3-0 defeat if offered it now. Just get it out of the way and then focus on the important games.

Same

And I have this really awful feeling.

Like a 0-2 Everton performance or an injury time robbery like Leicester.

Let's worry about Liverpool. We could get a result against them, we tonked Chelsea after all.

Writing games off is way more damaging than building expectations up for a future one.

Every game this season has felt like a cup final. I’m as nervous for how many we’ll ship at Anfield as I will be needing the 3pts against Southampton.

I could have worded it better, and we might get an unlikely result at Liverpool but.......

The expectation is that we'll lose, the likelihood is that we'll lose, and no one will be surprised by it. There is almost no jeopardy involved, and so I can't get too stressed by it.

Fwiw I think Liverpool and man city are much better teams than Chelsea, albeit man city have had a weird season.

I'm hoping we get another Sarmiento moment. I think we will beat Southampton it won't be comfortable though you can guarantee that I'm sure.

Sorry to be pessimistic but we're not getting a result at Anfield. I do worry that another 6-0 or similar would put a massive dampener on Southampton. Perhaps more so on the fan base and we really need them for 90 minutes as 3 points are crucial. We don't have a great record against teams around the bottom and the atmosphere will be vital. No nervousness.

I'm hoping we set up as we did at Arsenal, barely try to attack but just throttle the game.

The Southampton game is important, because it’s a game we should win. Most other teams are beating them so in theory it should be our easiest game.

However, it’s nowhere near as important as our games against Leicester, Everton and Wolves. Southampton are gone, whereas the other three games are all six pointers.

We could beat Liverpool (unlikely) and lose against Saints and still have the same points from those two games that you are expecting.

Agree it’s not as important as those you mention but it could be massive from a belief point of view, going into it off the back of 2 big defeats we will be pretty low.

Yeah. Losing against the worst team in the league wouldn’t be great for our confidence.

Even if we beat Southampton it won't mean we survive, conversely if we don't win it doesn't mean guaranteed relegation.
It will be tough, but I'm hopeful of a Broadhead moment. We were going nowhere in that game and heading for a defeat until a bit of Broady magic and he scored from a nothing position and it turned the game on its head.

Southampton is potentially the biggest game of the season up to that point - Kieran will have us prepared and ready.

Portman Road will be full to the rafters and the atmosphere will be off the chart.

I can only see a win for us

Yes, very true. It has Town fans turning up expecting an easy win and getting frustrated written all over it.

Too early to worry about it though, plenty of time next week.

regarding Liverpool, crazier things have happened.
while crazy things don't happen very often, if we admit defeat before the game we may as well just go back down.

either way we just need to keep positive and back the lads!

I'll probably be nervous on the day of the match.

TBF, worrying or not wont really impact the result.

The fans at Anfield will get behind the lads, even if they dont expect us to win.

I can see the atmosphere at the ground being the same as Brighton. Tense, nervous, quiet. Almost expecting the players to lift the crowd rather than the other way round. From the supporters point of view we need to try and treat each game like we did Manchester City - go down there and make some noise whatever. But that's not how it's played out this season.

Yes it's big. Further injuries permitting, our squad should look in good shape by then. The crowd need to be up for it and not expecting to be three goals up by the half-hour mark. While Saints have been bad this season, people should look at their away results – they've not been battered by anyone. It may end up being a reversion to a knife-edge Championship game and everyone needs to be ready.

It’s arguably the only home game of the season - now - in which failure to win it will justify strong criticism.

I feel the same. I think leading at Man Utd for half the game, then scoring 2 against Forest is niggling me. Plus the pressure will all be on us.

On the flip side Saints have drawn at Fulham and Brighton, lost by a goal at Man City, gone ahead at Arsenal, been five minutes from winning at Man United, been half a centimetre from drawing at Forest. It's a game we need to win but people need to be arriving at PR understanding how tough it will probably be.

Without doubt our key, must win games are
Saints
Leicester
Wolves
Everton
And to some degree
WHU
Palace.

The rest in the division would be a bonus if we got anything. It was always going to be thus too.

Win those games (definitely don't lose), and i think we'll survive this season.

But none of those sides have been in our position. In Ipswich terms, we have to look at Southampton in the same light as Stoke in 84/85 (beaten 5-1 at PR) and West Brom in 85/86 (beaten 1-0 at PR)

On the upside, 5 of our points this season came from our matches with Saints, Wolves, Leicester and Everton in the first half of the season. If we make that into 9-10 points from the return fixtures, it could be very helpful.

We have to see it as a game to win if we're to stay up, absolutely. I just don't want people in there pursing their lips grimly when we haven't scored after five minutes because it may well go right to the wire like last time.
