This season’s PL, toughest ever? 08:10 - Jan 26 with 2062 viewsbsw72

Has the fact that this season, 17 of the PL sides (all apart from the promoted teams) have been in the PL since 2022 further widened the gap between the EPL and the Football League teams.

This effectively means that these 17 clubs have been able to maximise their PL revenue uninterrupted, without relegation/need to sell and parachute payments.

Is this is why the likes of Brighton, Fulham and Bournemouth are looking stronger than ever, and aside from probably Liverpool, seeing all sides capable of taking points off each other regularly.

I may be overthinking this, but not sure I am.

I think this is almost certainly the case.

Wolves have a team full of internationals, but if we can finish above them and stay up, then the promoted teams will be cannon fodder next season including Leeds IMO.

I think you’re right.

We know how good we were before this season. We’re even better now. But we’re getting blown away by teams in this league.

It’s so important we stay up and “establish” ourselves. It would also trump anything KM has done to date.

Yes, but I'd say it's even worse than that. Leicester had 9 years continuously on the EPL before 1 year in the Championship (last year), and for Southampton it was 11 years. Both had parachute payments at the highest level for that 1 year.

Yes, absolutely.

The jump between the Champ and Prem is enormous now, bigger than it’s ever been which will make it an even bigger achievement than the double promotion if we stay up.
My biggest fear was doing a Southampton, but the fact we’re in there fighting with a genuine chance is all we could ask for.

As for how promoted clubs can stay up in the future, especially if they’ve not been in the Prem recently, it’s very difficult, unless you do what Forest did and ignore the spending regulations and accept the points deductions as a necessary evil.

There is a good case to argue that any side promoted, that hasn’t been in the top flight in the previous three seasons , receive a welcome bonus or be allowed to invest more in staying up.*

* sounds better than be allowed to make a bigger loss.

Just like last season and the one before that, if we stay up it will be a miracle.

Should add, we got relegated at the most difficult time and now we’ve got promoted at the most difficult time as well.

I'd be interested to know how Sheff Utd and Burnley fans are feeling about being promoted.

I can't imagine they are too excited about the prospect of being thrashed again every week.

I honestly think that we are very, very close to the PL shutting its doors on promotion and relegation.

A few years ago, if there was a vote, you could pretty much guarantee that the likes of Bournmouth, Brentford, Brighton, Fulham, Palace would vote it down. Now the only clubs that would are the 3 promoted ones.

It's coming, question is, will we still be in it when it happens?

That’s not true though, I only think that the top 17 sides have been the same for 2+ seasons on the trot only once before, and that was in 97-98 when the financial gap/rewards was not as big.

It's been like it for a few seasons now. Look at last season when the 3 promoted teams were relegated. I know I did, but lots of non Burnley fans laughed at Kompany, and how he had been found out as a manager now he was up against better mgrs in the PL. I don't think people really understood what a massive step-up it was between Champ & PL, we do now.

It certainly is, and had Wolves not regressed, the bottom three would be in serious trouble already.

But perversely that strength has killed Wolves and probably given the bottom four a very low points tally for one to escape.

Leeds aren't as strong as they were last year from a personnel point of view but can certainly strengthen if they do manage to go back up

The gap is growing and it's only going to widen further if no promoted clubs manage to stay up

very much so. Forest did basically what we have done in their first season up. Recruited a lot of saleable assets that also made them stronger. Forest stayed up by the skin of their teeth, but are now seeing the benefits. IF we stay up this season, then obviously, we will be in a much better starting position next season. As long as the club continue to invest in the playing side, then we could potentially be a Brighton or Fulham in a few seasons time. Staying up this season is critical to us becoming a stable PL club. If we go down, then I see a lot of what we have leaving and us starting all over again. We got to the PL a season or two earlier than planned, so we have had a much more difficult job on the player recruitment side of things. We would have liked to have had a stronger squad base in which to build on, but we did and we have to hope we stay up this season.

The thing with relegation now is you don't normally need to sell

We have more or less signed the Championship team of the season, who will be well set to bounce straight back
