Watching James Collins on Peter Crouch's podcast 16:46 - Feb 10 with 2454 viewssjg

Brilliant laugh, next to nothing about Ipswich but made me think of his game against Rotherham, arguably one of the best centre back performances I've seen for us and completely unexpected - I actually bumped into him at Thetford Go Ape and he finished my sentence when I said how good he was against them, lovely bloke.

Made me wonder what are your favourite Ipswich performances which came out of absolutely nowhere? Thinking Nsiala vs Leeds 18-19 when he could have stopped an 18 wheeler with his bare hands when we were already relegated, Barry Cotter debut (Barnsley maybe? Mick's last game I think) and the like

Pollitt vs Norwich will always be my top one in this regard.

Gavin Ward's hat-trick debut turned into a complete one off.

Not sure it was unexpected and came out of nowhere (largely because I can’t recall where his career with us was at before this game) but Dalian’s hat trick against promotion chasing Middlesbrough was simply stunning. Raw power, electrifying pace. Incredible display and a shining light albeit too briefly in an otherwise mediocre few seasons. RIP Dalian.

Going to throw another Nsiala performance in the hat, Swansea away 2-3. He was a calamity most the time but he gave his all defensively.

Hutchinson at Hull. In fact most of his performances in the run-in last season. A player just full of confidence and far too good for the level.

Also, Gio Dos Santos, home debut vs Burnley. Again, just far too good for the level.

Jonny Williams vs Derby, incredible, shame injuries ruined what should have been a great career for him.

It was against us but Ross Barkley when he was on loan at Wednesday was special, I think Chris Hutchins was in charge of us that day.

Career effectively ruined by a deliberate and cynical assault in our home match v. Watford as I recall.

You are right about Dalian. Went away in the May with a physique like Michael Jackson came back in the August with a physique like Frank Bruno. Always remember it. Totally different player. And what a player, still one of my favourites. Duncan just didn’t seem to know how to man manage him.

Sone Aluko seemed like a squad filler when he signed. Never again after the Cambridge game in 2021-22 when he scored twice.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

Or what about Hladky against Sunderland last year, the opening day, and the following games too as it became apparent that even when Walton was back, he might not make the team.

Hate to be that guy but that game sums up his time with us. Always looked exciting, promising, perhaps too good for the level...but actually produced next to nothing.

Popular member of the squad though, which obviously went a long way.
