The Thai food was as good pub food as I have ever had. Maybe it was because the person who brought it out looked like he could be Thai, as did someone working in the kitchen. The draft Staropramen was also excellent. [Post edited 16 Feb 9:35]

What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 22:42 - Feb 15 by ArnoldMoorhen | When did you last go to Birmingham New Street? It's had a huge redevelopment. Birmingham is a great city to live in, with very friendly locals. Aston Villa's ground is in one of the most deprived areas. Birmingham City's ground is also in a deprived area, but with the added disadvantage of being in a post-industrial wasteland in a deprived area. City centre for pubs, then train out to the ground would have been the best bet. |
I remember going to St. Andrews when I was kid ( about 12, circa 1989 ) and i'd never seen anything quite like in regards to the surrounding area, a real eye-opener!

The centre’s not too bad at all, although it’s been a few years since I took that option rather than drive to Villa Park (but never use their car park lol). Plenty of decent places to eat and drink in the centre, and good shopping too if you live in a shopping wasteland like me.

What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 07:32 - Feb 16 by ITFC_Forever | Yes, the away end used to be the lower tier behind the goal opposite the Holte End. |
Were the away seats ever at the other end of the stand we were in yesterday? Or opposite where we were yesterday? In my mind I was sure I’d seen us at Villa in that location at some point, but my mind may be playing tricks.

What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 23:43 - Feb 15 by ArnoldMoorhen | Mick Mills was Birmingham City manager for a while, and is pretty straight talking. It was a long time ago, though, but the hardcore Villa v Bluenose hate is incredibly strong. The age of the person who said that to you puts him makes old enough to associate Mick Mills primarily with Ipswich, before he became Brum manager. |
How did that come about, that he was according to Wiki ‘joint caretaker manager’ at Brum. It was almost a decade after his previous management job, his brief spell at Colchester.

No, they’ve always either been where they are now, or the lower tier behind the goal.

I commented to my mates how magnificent the pub building was, and I came across this from a review. "A beautifully designed Victorian Pub, The Bartons Arms was established in the year 1901 by James and Lister Lea, celebrated pub architects duo. Now marked as a Grade II listed structure, The Bartons Arms is popular for its snob screens and Minton-Hollins wall tiles. These snob screens enabled the middle class patrons to view the working class guests in the next bar but they could not be seen by the middle class patrons. Today, The Bartons Arms serves delectable Thai cuisine and real ales. Some of its famous preparations include pad thai, thai burger, massaman beef curry and chicken satay skewers." I had the massaman beef curry. EDIT: I also came across this on Tripadvior which vouches for the authenticity of the Thai dishes. The Bartons Arms (BBS) is Birmingham's finest Victorian Public House & Restaurant. It offers you a wide selection of real ale, authentic Thai cuisine and hospitality that is second to none. One of the finest examples of Victorian pub architecture and one of the most beautiful pub interiors in the country, The Bartons Arms is well worth a visit. Oakham Ales lead the field in contemporary tastes of real ales, and the Bartons now boasts their award winning beers, alongside guest ales from across the country, probably the best range of imported bottled beers in Birmingham, and of course, one of the fastest growing cuisine styles, Thai food choose from an extensive menu prepared by real Thai chefs. Now, as Birmingham promotes itself as one of Europe's finest Cities, it is a 'must go' for the diner, drinker, pub-lover and 20 million plus business and tourist visitors to Birmingham. What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 22:08 - Feb 15 by SitfcB | Just so strange and archaic IMO. Mates tried to get in a pub called the Yew Tree after someone on twitter suggested it, weren’t allowed in even though it was empty inside, Villa fans on Twitter suggest it’s down to the police. Know some managed to get in one called the Barton Arms but that was a 30 min walk from where we parked and then 30mins back to the ground, not worth it for one pint |
I have heard a lot of pubs not allwing away fans in is down to insurance., and old bill.

The Vine? Fantastic food and beer choices in there. And the largest Greggs I’ve ever seen right next to the ground for those who like such things.

going waaaay back to 67/68 I travelled on the Blue Arrow and the Town fans were situated in the bottom of the Holte End…spent most of the game being pelted with various missiles being hurled from further up…proper random items as well…personally I got hit by a wax candle and a yo yo…different times…😆
What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 15:47 - Feb 16 with 1157 views | SuperBobbyPetta | I've been to a fair few league 1, championship and premier league grounds over the last couple of years and thought Villa was one of the worst. Surrounding area unwelcoming, unable to get a drink inside and the concourse was a narrow corridor. Thankfully the result and performance made it a good day still.

What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 15:51 - Feb 17 with 620 views | GreenEye | Rough part of town but the Villa fans on the train in & out of Witton from New Street were friendly enough. There were also a bunch of Walsall fans on the way there, also friendly. The worst part was a small kiosk on the upper level in the ground, £3.20 for a Bovril and no alcohol. That said, probably the best pies this season. Leaving afterwards, one Villa fan started a conversation - "you must be pleased"...... "Delap is your best player" Made a nice change from my last visit in April 1981 Villa 1 Town 2 when we had a brick chucked at us.

What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 16:07 - Feb 17 with 580 views | Bluespeed225 | 81 semi a mob of them came in the Holte end, fair play, their ground, they went out with their tails between their legs and a few thick ears. They came to the walkway top right as you looked at the old layout. Kingfisher boys doing the business. The following October I went on a coach, we won again, Osman scored. The Holte emptied about 10 minutes before the end, gates open at fill time and they steam in, the line held, but not without me getting a clump, down by what I reckon is where the lawnmowers were kept under the stand. It’s still there, always takes me back whenever I see it on tv! Coaches got a bricking on the way out, laughs all round once on the motorway, hid my bump from the folks on returning home and the next few days!

What is it with West Midlands clubs? on 22:32 - Feb 15 by ArnoldMoorhen | Coventry is in the East Midlands, so your point stands. |
You might like to take that up with the Mayor for the West Midlands, whose patch includes Coventry. Coventry is in the metropolitan and ceremonial county of West Midlands, and also within the West Midlands region (as established as one of the nine official administrative regions of England in the 1990s), as opposed to the East Midlands administrative region. I know we're post-truth now and all that, but...
