38010 13:08 - Mar 7 with 2630 views | flykickingbybgunn | On 8th March 1975 (50 Years ago on Saturday) Town hosted Leeds in the FA Cup 6th round. The attendance was a record that still stands of 38010. I was sat on the grass leaning up against the wall. You could do them sort of things then. This was the first match that eventually went to a 3rd replay which we won 3-2. Which lead on to the Semifinal where the ref disallowed two perfectly good goals for us and we lost to West Ham 2-1. Ancient history I know, but interestin ...

I was told a while ago by some with some knowledge of these things the club reckoned there were more people in the ground that that they hadn't counted and the attendance was probably nearer 40k

I remember the kids sitting around the pitch and barely being able to move my arms in the crush. Funnily I don't remember too much about the game or the 2nd replay (first at Filbert Street). I went there on a bus from school. They wouldn't arrange another one for the final match a couple of days later!
38010 on 13:40 - Mar 7 with 1964 views | hammo56 | Was there. Was on the Cobbold terrace and even in there you couldn’t move. Good job it was not now as the bladder would never have held out for 90 minutes.
38010 on 13:43 - Mar 7 with 1956 views | sibrespace | I was there that day in the North Stand. I got there about 1 o’clock and stood near the back. The stand was heaving and I could hardly move by 2 o’clock. So many fans came in through the turnstiles who couldn’t get into the stands that stewards led them out to sit on the grass all around the touchline. Leeds were the reigning League champions and had a wonderful star studded team. We were on course for the double, but eventually fell just short. 3rd in the league and unjustly losing semi-finalists in the cup. The game itself was a tight goalless draw, although David Johnson came close to scoring. Then of course came the three replays which I listened to on my transistor radio in my bedroom. Had it been 3 points for a win that season we would have won the league on goal difference from Derby. And had we got through the semifinal against West Ham we would have met second tier Fulham in the final. In the UEFA Cup we were knocked out without losing - on away goals to FC Twente. Very much a what-if season.
38010 on 13:59 - Mar 7 with 1927 views | Churchman | I was there! Standing near the middle in the Portman Stand (Cobbold) near the wooden hut. The executive boxes are there now. I wasn’t that old and not that big. I saw very little, but it was absolutely jammed. We didn’t care. Went to a few games where the terraces were jammed packed, but that was one of the tightest, looking back. I don’t think we were in the ground any later than 1pm. But in those days any big game where you were standing you needed to be in so early if you wanted a decent spot. We did the two Filbert Street replays, but not the Elland Road one.
38010 on 14:00 - Mar 7 with 1921 views | Meadowlark | I was in the North Stand. Went to both replays at Filbert Street (Tuesday and Thursday) A load of us in the back of someone's Ford Transit. Also went to both semi-finals, the first at Villa Park and the replay at Stamford Bridge. Our coach driver got lost in Birmingham and someone had to hail a taxi and get the bus to follow it to the ground!! After the semi-final replay at Stamford Bridge our coach was delayed and we were attacked by West Ham fans who smashed a bottle over my pal's head! I never like matches in London to this day......Palace tomorrow!

My hazy memory thinks Leeds had such a big following that day they had about three quarters of the Notth Stand*. •I’m expecting a Leeds fan to tell me they took more than that
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

38010 on 17:42 - Mar 7 with 1628 views | DJR | I played an away rugby rugby game in the morning some distance away and it was touch and go whether our coach would get us back to Ipswich in time for the game. The North Stand certainly was packed and I remember the barriers being broken. In the second half, I took the opportunity to go to Churchmans where there was less of a crush. I went to the first Filbert Street replay and the first semi-final. As our train for the semi entered Birmingham. it stopped under a railway line that crossed the line. There was a stationary West Ham train on that line, and a hail of bottles and other objects rained down on our train.

38010 on 22:23 - Mar 7 with 1332 views | TexacoCup | Like many others i was in the North, halfway down, it was a squeeze - it was a big, big match but I remember next to nothing about it. I was at both Leicester replays and I have a slight soft spot for Leicester as their fans supported us at both. Wonderful goal by Woodsy! I got to Villa Park for the SF but not to the replay

38010 on 08:14 - Mar 8 with 1124 views | shady | Wonderful memories: Was living in Leeds at the time and this was the seminal moment when we overtook them as the nation's best football team. Actually didn't make it to the home game but did make the next 2 but missed the 4th match. Just couldn't handle another train trip with all the Leeds supporters. For example on arrival at Leicester railway station they all descended whilst train still pulling in, double scarves on each wrist absolutely screaming their chants. As for the Elland Road replay : 2 observations: even though we drew I feel this was our best performance we really stood up to them and they were really good but couldn't get past us (until near the end) Secondly the power of the cup on attendances. I doubt we had more than 50 supporters at the game at Elland Road despite a record crowd at Portman Road. (I also noted this a few years later when we played a semi final at Villa Park with 18,000? fans but then 3 days later just 700max? for a top of the table clash.)
38010 on 08:23 - Mar 8 with 1102 views | hammo56 | Went to the home game and the 2nd replay at Filbert Street. From the home game remember when Johnson hit the bar and walking out after the 2nd replay at Filbert Street convinced that it was the year that our name was on the trophy especially as we had already beaten Liverpool earlier on in the competition. However, a certain referee had different ideas in the semi-final. Attended both the semi-final games and remember coming out of Stamford Bridge feeling the most gutted that I’ve ever felt in my 53 years of following the Town.
