Interesting thought about Chris Wood 16:41 - Mar 15 with 2444 viewsNthsuffolkblue

He is exactly the sort of player we need. I wonder how he was viewed during his loan spell with us when he was 22/23. Would it be fair to say that Al Hamadi would be seen very similarly right now?

Note: this is not saying Al Hamadi will ever become as good as Wood, but it is to make the point that players progress.

I remember it well. He should have scored away at Wolves in the run in!

He slightly divided opinion as a bit of an immobile target man and a clearly talented, do it all striker.

AAH is a bit of a meme. Nowhere near good enough in reality.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Wood had been out injured when he signed for us. I still thought at the time he would have been a good signing.

I'm not sure how well he would work for us as we have been a pressing team when at our best under McKenna. He's clearly not that type. He's and effective striker who has found the ideal team because it's set up perfectly for him. Low block, conserve energy side with rapid wide players who counter and crops/pull back for him. It's perfect for him.

Nothing at all like AAH. Wood was already well rated and had pedigree. Was seen as a promising signing to get us over the line in 2014-5, although Evans should have pushed the boat out more. Showed some really good touches and was much more involved in build up play than showing signs of being the finisher he has been this season.

It seems very fashionable to write AAH off but his record in the Championship isn't bad at all. No idea why so many are so keen to criticise him.

Truly impaired.

He was terrible here and mainly because he was coming back from injury. Would have been difficult to identify how decent he has proven to be from his time with us.

I don't think he was any where near fit when we loaned him but he was definitely one who got away, particularly when we had lost Murphy?

Nothing like AHH.

He only came to us because he was crocked and needed games. He was clearly not that fit and his performances showed that.

Leeds bought him the summer after for about £2-3million, which in this time is probably about £10m

'Exactly the kind of player we need'?! Really? We've currently got the future England no.9 playing for us who will go on to have a much better career than Wood. Wood has decent players around him who aren't lightweight and play quickly, creating loads of chances for him. If we had signed him at the start of the season we wouldn't have any more points than we do now.

Someone like Elliott Anderson might have made a huge difference though.

He was terrible today to be fair. Portman Road must be some kind of kryptonite to him.

Delap's going to have to find a lot more to be the future England number nine. His slump has been concerning after a superb first half of the season. He looks a shadow of the player who basically bossed Manchester United off the park.

To be fair to him he wasn't near full fitness during his period with us but he was poor. Don't remember there being any chance of us signing him permanently though.

Do you think Stoke would pay £10m for Al Hamadi in the summer? I could see it if he continues to do well there.

The point I am trying to make is that Al Hamadi could become a decent Premier League striker in the future.

While he was playing for us this season, he was only just making a recovery from injury like Wood was when he was here.

Of course, this is not to say that Al Hamadi will make that progress. More a point that it is possible. Another exhibit I would give is Keiffer Moore who was 25 when here and universally written off until he went on loan to Rotherham. I actually think Al Hamadi's general approach is reminiscent of Moore's.

No chance. Stoke are skint, or rather , right on the FFP limit.

It’s not a slump. What the heck is he supposed to do with no support and less than zero service. He’s not feeding on scraps. He’s feeding on scraps of scraps. Nobody can do anything with that. Messi and Ronaldo in their prime would do nothing at our club with what’s behind.

Delap has done well. Physical, good attitude, no little skill, he’ll have an excellent career.

Chris Wood? I saw him play on loan. He was an absolute disgrace. He waddled on as fat as ‘Duke’ and Ebanks-Blake, disinterested and used the club as a training session to get fit for a stonking season with Leeds.

Well done mugging us off for wages while getting fit. He must have loved any minute, including the Zinger burgers, but for us there was zilch in return. He was a waste of space. That’s purely a reflection of the club we were at that time in my view.

He got fit, played well in the win at Watford and then got recalled just in time for the play-offs when we could really have done with him. Don’t think Leicester even played him after that.

Probably me Steve, but I just remember an oversize lump in straining shorts lumbering around slowly. Next season with Leeds, fat suit discarded and he was a total weapon. As I say, ten years on, probably my memory failing me.

He definitely started that way, so don’t think your memory is failing that much. Just he did improve.

The point I'm making is they're at told different stages of their career despite probably being a similar age.

I know AHH is only 23/24 and could improve, but I don't see it. I think he's probably at his peak in terms of playing. He probably won't be more than a bit part Premier league player, if he makes it to the PL again.

Stoke, nor any other team, are paying anywhere near £10m for AHH currently.
