Weird similarities to Burley’s relegation season on 09:58 - Mar 17 by Dubtractor

I mentioned stubbornness of managers in another post, but Burley's decision to stick with Marshall, a truly crap keeper, was mad.

Muric has made some decent saves, but he will be remembered as the keeper that gave balls away leading to goals. If we'd had palmer in since day one would we be where we are now??

a Matt Holland this season would have made a massive difference

Thinking of that, what players from that squad would you wish we could have had this time round.....

Stewart...
Holland....

Losing Stewart was a big part of why we went down.

Another similarity is bringing in lots of new expensive signings that never gelled into a team. It is important we develop a team from what we have quickly into next season.

Statistically the team and the defence have done worse with Palmer in. Which does seem odd because he looks a more assured keeper who makes fewer mistakes.

The irony is, we’ve started making hideous errors in all other areas of the pitch since we signed Palmer.

Muric’s errors stood out because, overall, we were functioning quite well as a defensive unit up to Christmas and it was generally only his mistakes that were costing us points in the marginal games.

We’ve been woeful since the Fulham game. I’ve lost count of the number of dreadfully basic feck ups we’ve allowed to become the norm in the last 10 or so games.

This is a good shout. We have sucked defensively since the Chelsea game, really.

Tuanzebe the only remotely capable RB, and he has either been suspended, or injured. The remaining candidates have either been quite bad or Ben Godfrey.

Leif cannot defend, which didn't matter too much in the Champ, but very much matters in the Prem; I really like Greaves, but he's fallen off a bit of a cliff recently, and Woolf has had some proper brainfarts recently. O'Shea is doing quite well but can't do it all himself, and Burgess is 4th choice, perhaps a little unfairly.

Yeah, it's all quite hard work innit.

There are some similarities with Burnley's relegation season too.

Muric is the new Muric
O'Shea is the new O'Shea
McKenna is the new Kompany

I think part of the problem is that the way we set up (when we play 4-2-3-1) leaves our right-back and/or left centre-back defending one-on-one vs an international quality winger every time we lose the ball high up the pitch. Somehow Axel manages to cope with this but nobody else has consistently managed to.

That's possibly a bit harsh on KM but its true that like Kompany he hasn't adapted his approach in the way that, for example, Thomas Frank did when Brentford were promoted. There's some really good TF stuff online about how he changed their approach for the premier league which is well worth a read/watch.

Sereni was a fantastic goalkeeper but was also a big problem.

I thought he was bang average, hopeless on crosses, great shot stopper. Not the ideal combination in the premier league 24 years ago.

The only Muff in Town.

The comparisons are very weak.

If you mean Darren Bent, he barely played in the Premier League. If you mean marcus, then no too haha

Muric is a lot worse than Sereni ever was.

Ogbene i'm sure will come back at some point

Even the games, at least around Christmas I think we won 7 out of 8 or 9 games and gave ourselves a chance.

All in all, not many similarities other than it'll end in relegation

I thought Sereni was decent.

We were also massively distracted by the Uefa cup in the first half of the season, where we mostly actually played well.

We then looked hungover every league game until a massive run from Christmas through and January. We then fell of a cliff after we got battered by one of the big boys and never recovered/ran out of daylight.

It was a perfect storm of bad transfers, too many games, stadium distraction and truth be told a bit of hubris.

I know that was then, but it could be again..
