Would you find another promotion race exciting? 15:01 - Mar 17 with 5744 viewsSaffronWaldenBlues

I will undoubtedly get a few pelters for this, but I don't know how enjoyable it will be, in the sense last season it was very much unexpected, long over due, us against the world, and who knows what's next. I don't know what could top that feeling in terms of a promotion. I don't know how excited I am going to feel about going back up next season, knowing what is coming, especially when the teams up there will be a year further ahead of us, that we will need another overhaul and even then we could still end up doing a Norwich and coming back down again.

I am sure I will get roped into it again in some way, but I can't be the only one who has had their fingers burned with this Premier League stuff. Maybe chasing an actual league title for the first time since 1992 will be what draws me in, if we are up there. As for Playoffs, I suppose we can finally play new Wembley but the stress of Playoffs is another thing altogether!

I guess had we had a little more to enjoy I may feel differently, but the idea of doing this Premier League stuff again isn't really inspiring me. Is it just me?

Depending on what happens during the summer as we say. No expectations and if we are in the mix during the year and defo near the end I am very much getting excited

I guess if we go back up, we should have 5-6 experienced Premier League players in the team to build from.

I would love to see us actually win a trophy for champions of the division for the first time in 34 years, an open top bus for Champions, not runners up and then say no thanks to promotion to participate as cannon fodder for the established 17 PL clubs, and stay where we can actually compete.

I was there when McKenna's ITFC won in the Premier League at Home. Our only home win in a year.

Nah, after this season I don't think I'll bother with Football anymore. What a daft question.

Hell, even the budgies got excited last year when they thought we were going to miss out.

Very well said.

It's why going to games in the midst of the Evans fallow years was still interesting and vital even though the football was dire and hope was non existent because it was the story of the club and a million other narratives running through it too.

There was something morbidly curious about the Evans era that kept drawing me in, despite the feeling that we were experiencing the same season over and over again. By the final few years I was interested to see how ugly and toxic it would get before something changed, rather than through any sense of hope.

Think you need to change your outlook on following a football team. IMHO.

I get it. That feeling of unfiltered joy when we got promoted back to back was intoxicating. The problem with chasing that high is that it fades, and when it does, you’re left searching for the next one. If you measure your enjoyment of football solely by the peaks, you’ll miss out on everything in between.

Football isn’t just about the destination, it’s about the journey - every season, every match, every moment of hope or despair that shapes what comes next. Some seasons are about expectation (that could apply to next season), others about survival (sadly our race appears run this season), some about rebuilding. Each carries its own story, its own moments of joy, frustration, and surprise.

Football is like life - you take the lows with the highs because they give everything meaning. If you only care about the big moments, you’ll spend most of your time waiting rather than living.

So, maybe this next promotion won’t feel exactly like 2024. Maybe it’ll be different. But different doesn’t mean worse or you won't get swept up in it - it means another chapter, another set of memories waiting to be written.

The beauty of football is that you never really know what’s coming but if you allow yourself to feel it all, you’ll never stop loving the ride.

I’d thumb you twice if I could

Yes, I will find another promotion race exciting.

But last season and the euphoria that followed will never be repeated unless we win a trophy. It was a one-off.

I enjoy winning, can even enjoy drawing and even games that we lose in some circumstances. It's a 46 game season so there's normally a lot of each. I enjoyed finishing second the last 2 seasons but there's nothing like being the champions of your division rather than second best. Only happened twice in 60+ years. I saw one of them, perhaps it's unreasonable to wish for another.

At this point, I find the prospect of simply winning a match exciting.

In all seriousness, yes I will find another promotion race to be exciting.

I find the blind optimism of building for another PL season to be exciting.

Bring it all on (again).

it is the hope that draws us back in year after year. Without hope there is only despair. Or something.

What will be nice is the summer clean slate for the players.

Players playing their level and not being compared to a prem alternative.

I'm looking forward to seeing Clarke. Philogene in the championship. Ogbene especially with his pace.
I think Wes might compete for a rb role which I think he'd be great at behind ogbene

Al hamadi can come back In and maybe make his name here too.

I’m not sure that giving the players a clean slate is necessary the way to move ahead. Some haven’t performed in the PL and they’ll need to improve if they want another stab at the PL.

But another year to develop away from the glare of the PL might well be good for them.

It’s arguably more ‘exciting’ as a supporter to yo-yo than be an Everton. Not saying we’re nailed on to yo-yo by any stretch, there will be a few clubs with something to say about that, but I think we’ll be towards the right end of the table.

Promotion and relegation up and down the pyramid as always been one of the great things about English football but every year the top division clubs get stronger and stronger, physically individually and in squad depth, making it virtually impossible for promoted teams to avoid relegation. PL rules don't allow the level of spending that would give a FL club a realistic chance. You would really need one of the established 17 to have a disastrous season or massive points deduction to change that. The PL will eventually scrap relegation/promotion and become the sort of league that the mostly US club owners are familiar with.

I often wonder how much Crystal Palace fans enjoy their existence. Safety every year in relative comfort, never seem to go on a cup run, never threaten euro places. Just kind of hum along doing not much other than existing. I’m sure their owners love the stability of 12th/15th every season - something our gamechangers would die for - but for the fans it’s got to be a bit dull, surely.

It was three years of being in that state that lead some Charlton fans to declare that Curbishley had taken them as far as he could.

Pretty much like our long run in the Championship after the playoffs season from 2006-c2017 and many others like PNE, Bristol City, Millwall, QPR et al, but at least in the Prem Palace can get the £££ you don't get treading water in the EFL

No relevance to your post whatsoever, as I can't be bothered to read even purportedly reasonable negativity, but I can never remember what colour the spice saffron is; it's one of those things I'm forever getting confused about - is it yellow or is it red? Presumably the town is named after the spice in some way?

To answer the question posed, what is the point if you wouldn't enjoy promotion?

Of course we want to make a far better fist of things if we do go up.

However, if you do not want to see the team promoted, what is the point in supporting them at all? I hope that is the sentiment of plenty as that will mean I can get tickets again.
