You couldn't make this up. The planning for the recent bombing of the Houtis in Yemen by the USA was given to a journalist as it happened. Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of the Atlantic Magazine was included in a Group Text discussion by top Trump Officials - Hegseth, Miller, Vance. Waltz etc. It was a mistake to do so and Goldberg thought it was a spoof or a trap by an organization that was trying to embarass the Atlantic. It wasn't and he realised it was real when the bombs started dropping. The incompetence of the Trump administration is now beyond a joke. There are many videos covering it - Times Radio but this is a good one

Trump talking about this currently in one of his rambling downloads to journos.
The guy invited into the call who performed the ‘attack’ is a sleazeball working for a failing publication. The attack is because he’s had the greatest first two months of any president ever.
Relentless rambling BS. He’s had three months of this term. There’s 45 to go.
He’s giving me a migraine.
I'm not so sure it's only going to be another 45 months...either he stays on, because it's what the people want (without actually holding an election) or the potentially even worse Vance takes over.

Is there a possibility that this leak is all staged as a means for the administration to “accidentally” emphasise to the Europeans just how frustrated they are with Europes’s level of military expenditure. Just one more way to up the pressure on Europe and their allies.
I wouldn’t put it past them, though perhaps such planning might be beyond their competence.
I hope so but who knows.
It would be right out of The Donalds playbook.
“Hello, I'm your MP. Actually I'm not. I'm your candidate. Gosh.”
Boris Johnson canvassing in Henley, 2005.

“We are cutting back on our tanks,” Ellwood told the PM at the Liaison Committee on 17 November 2021. “What is amassing on the Ukrainian border? It’s tanks. But that’s besides the point. I’m saying step back, look at the wider security picture, look at our defence posture, and see what needs to be done.”
He added that in general “capabilities have been reduced”, pointing to cuts to tanks, aircraft and the removal of 10,000 troops.
Johnson dismissed his concerns and responded: “We have to recognise that the old concepts of fighting big tank battles on European land mass are over, and there are other, better things we should be investing in, in FCAS, in the future combat air system, in cyber, this is how warfare in the future is going to be.”
No, you probably didn’t, you were probably charmed by his hair and wiff waff.
What has that rant got to do with anything? Of course our armed forces have been cut cut and more cuts, don’t hold your breath on the upcoming SDR either there are some concerning rumours coming out about that! Johnson whatever his faults was the first western leader to back Ukraine and as far as I know he didn’t threaten Canada or Greenland either!

It’s not a rant, it’s a couple of quotes.
It demonstrates the incompetence of Johnson, and the Tories.

What the tories did and didn’t do along with their predecessors was mostly appalling. Head in the sand stuff. But that was then. The Russian war has been going 11 years now and Starmer has had nearly 9 months to see the threat and start doing something about it. What’s he done? Watched the army shrink and kept the scrap yards busy while another hostile threat in the US has emerged.
I agree with your concerns regarding yet another SDR. That means more cuts, a bit of playing with the figures to make it look like we are serious, but when it comes to it, I doubt they are.
Eat them first and beg for Trumps crumbs while thanking him for another kick up the rear end will be the policy for the foreseeable. I just don’t think they want to face the new reality and the threat that poses.
I hope I’m wrong and they’re quietly get on with things.
Edit: this is an interesting summary from BBC which summarises the threat
There are a few on here who’ve bemoaned US hegemony and foreign policy. Unfortunately we are going to find out (as I’ve always said) the alternative is far worse. The power vacuum as America pulls back its global reach is going to be filled by various bad actors. The world is going to become a more unpredictable and dangerous place.

You are correct already China is taking advantage in Kenya with the withdrawal of US aid and apparently there are now 12 Russian channels targeting Africa in general now with the cut to the American service!

You're quite right. The USA invested in these countries making them semi-dependent on the USA. The replacement benefactor only has to match the grants to gain the benefit that the USA worked years to achieve. Trump has shown with his acquaintances (they are never real friends) that he'll shun them when he no longer has a use for them eg Rudy Giuliani. That's why he doesn't see the worth in USAID/soft power. Friends are hard to make, and can easily be lost with a wrong word or deed and are very hard to get back. That's a lesson the USA is gonna learn when the Trump era is over. Trump thinks he can run the Government as he ran his businesses. He fails to understand that his business affected a few thousand people whereas the USA government affects half the worlds population directly or indirectly. Trump - deliberately or not - is turning the USA into a failed state. He's a worse human being than Chris Sutton.
