I’ve written about my frustration with Palmer in recent posts - not helping give us a threat.
Last game I saw the green-shoots of a different player, and today he was excellent with his feet, inviting the press and (mostly) comfortably with his feet (that one ball that went under his foot for a corner notwithstanding). At times he was also quick to release, be it a kick or a throw.
Very promising improvement.

I really don't get what people see in him. For me, he's a solid Championship keeper, no more, no less. His distribution errors today would've been jumped on if he was Muric. He's nowhere near as comfortable on the ball as Hladky is/was.
Morsy was visibly annoyed with him on multiple occasions and seemed to be coaching him through the game.

Aside from the one that went under his foot for the corner, there was another one where he seemed to be inviting the press then when it came he panicked and put it out for a throw. Muric would have got pelters if he'd done it.

I’ve been critical of Palmer on a number of occasions, as I don’t think he’s as good as Muric.
Credit where credit’s due though. Was he perfect / brilliant today. No, but it’s blinkered to say he hadn’t improved in the last couple of games. That is presumably coaching, and it is a promising sign for the future.

If Muric was in goal today and put in the same performance he'd have got dog's abuse from the crowd and there'd have been several threads on here during and after the game slagging him off.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
We have real problems if Palmer is the issue as he has the highest rating based on match ratings on this forum. If this is the case we will need to recruit 18 players in the Summer.

I could not agree with this more. Our fanbase completely astound me at times, as Muric was hammered for errors far less critical than many of those Palmer consistently makes in games. He is absolutely woeful at commanding his box (for his faults, Muric took a lot of pressure off us by how good he was at this) and with his feet he is absolutely diabolical - after his near howler against Wolves, he nearly did the same once again today. Not the answer for me.

He has been decent, but is iffy with the ball at his feet, and does not find players like Muric did when he goes long.

A keeper that goes for a few million in the January window is exactly that, a solid championship keeper. We had to save face a bit after Muric and weren’t going to be starting Walton all second half of the season, plus he had a knock.
We would obviously be back in the market if we go back up, should be ok for next season though.

"absolutely diabolical" is hyperbolic nonsense.

He inspires more confidence than Muric but he's made several errors with his feet and we've not been caught with a goal which is the difference. He's clearly transitioning into a ball player which must be hard at his age to be fair.
We have a bloated squads in terms of many positions and nothing in others this needs to be addressed in the summer.

Muric made errors when we felt we had a chance of staying up, especially against Southampton. Palmer then had a game where he saved everything against Villa. The team seemed happier with him, and obviously the fans responded too.
I think Muric is a better keeper, but I like Palmer’s vibes. After he made that ridiculous mistake against Wolves, he faced up to the North Stand at half time and applauded us. But he has made a few mistakes, and his distribution and concentration is nowhere near as good as Muric’s.
I think I’d rather Muric started next year. Possibly less pressure and hopefully he’ll gain some experience and presence. But I expect he’ll be moved on.

FFS the people on this forum can be complete d1cks at times.
This was not a thread about Muric, but still some feel the need to bash him.
It was not about Palmer being the next Messiah for us in goal.
It was me (having previously been critical of Palmer’s reluctance to build from the back, or initiate a quick release) saying that there were improvements in that area during yesterday’s game. Simple as that - not saying he’s excellent with his feet, not saying he doesn’t make mistakes, and certainly not saying he’s suddenly better than Muric in this respect - just saying I welcome some improvements in this area, and hope the good coaching continues.

Despite these "critical" errors Palmer "consistently makes in games", none of them have led directly to us conceding goals nor dropping points in the 14 games he's played. Maybe there's some numerical measure by which nearly conceding a goal isn't as bad as conceding a goal.
Muric played 19 games and https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/error_lead_to_goal has him directly responsible for five conceded goals, the most of any individual player in the league. Quite funny that the Brentford game is the one you choose to highlight how good he supposedly is at commanding his box, when his inability to do so nor communicate with his defence was exactly what cost us the goal by which we lost the reverse fixture.

I really dont accept that errors led to five goals. Or that it is a fair stat when in a team that is doing so much defending. Or when it excludes how many situations his excellent command of the area prevented from becoming goals.

The intent of this thread was not (I repeat) to bash Palmer or Muric - why people are so quick to pile in on negativity I really don't understand.
But since you are talking stats that matter, we conceded significantly fewer goals per game with Muric in goal than either Walton or Palmer. Our fortunes have definitely been on a downward trajectory since Palmer came in. Is that down to Palmer? Impossible to say, but it is a valid observation for those who are so negative about Muric to consider. It's NOT all about high profile errors.

We do need to recruit a lot of players in the summer. A while new midfield. Strikers and probably a couple of players behind as well. Can see omari, broadhead, Delap and even possibly Clarke going. Chaplin not good enough which leaves us very short in front of defence.

It's debate, mate.
As always, stats can be made to do anything. But to generalise, it seems the prevailing opinion amongst those who favour Muric's performances is that the games he lost for us don't matter that much, because he saved us a point against Brighton and put in some decent performances in games that we still lost anyway. Amongst those who favour Palmer's performances, it's that the goals he nearly conceded (but didn't) don't matter that much, because he single-handedly kept us in games we drew against Villa, Chelsea and Everton, having come into the side at a point when we were all but doomed anyway.
Maybe there's truth to both, so you're then into looking into anecdotal points about both their performances, at which point Muric's high-profile errors, the defence's visible nervousness with him in goal, and instances such as Szmodics yelling out in frustration about his kicking can't really be ignored. For balance, neither can Morsy or Burgess getting pissed off with Palmer, but it seems like nostalgia about the first few months when the misery of the Premiership hadn't really kicked in might be clouding the memory of some as to just how sketchy Muric was.
It's all moot of course, because with Muric's unfathomably-high ceiling, young age and heroic performances this season, I can't see how we're going to keep the top clubs' hands off him this summer. We'll see

Debate is good, but its better to try and keep the debate about the subject in hand, rather than agendas always taking them off course onto some crusade. I suspect most have even lost sight of the fact that the original post was to recognise improvements in parts of Palmer's game.
There are plenty of other threads debating the merits of Palmer vs Muric for that to continue, or start another. Muric wasn't even part of my OP.

I entirely agree with your OP. But unfortunately you don't get to gatekeep what happens on your thread on a public forum, any more than those of us who'd prefer to see fewer unnecessary "if Muric had done that he'd have got pelters" threads week-in-week-out get their wish.

Nothing to do with Palmer here but Muric is an infuriating player, he is incredibly talented and also massive so you can see a high shelf there, if he can ever develop some consistency
He isn't particularly old by keeper standards either so he could end up being a very good keeper, he was and probably always be the wrong keeper for us though sadly
Hladky was ridiculously good with his feet and in all honesty, we are very unlikely to find another keeper as good there
What we will find and probably already found are keepers who are actually better than him at the pure keeping stuff
There's no evidence he would have been any good in the PL, much as I liked him. That's the call McKenna made and the big mistake was signing Muric.
He was then fairly stubborn about backing him which is entirely on him. I'm not convinced he has ever learned that Davis isn't a particularly good defender and pushing him miles up the field has caused a lot more problems than it has solved (sadly). I appreciate he has money in the bank and we probably did need two perfect windows to stay up but McKenna is not without blame this season, it has been a learning curve for everybody.
