Your Top 3, plausible, signings for this Summer 11:09 - May 12 with 6858 viewsLen_Brennan

It's going to be tricky window, as this season has shown the gap between Premier League & Championship level players. We have to work on the basis that we will be pushing to go straight back up & try to sign players that will be capable of stepping up with us.
If we found it difficult to get PL level players to join us last summer, it should be even harder now that we have gone back down. The foreign markets are a must, but who do you think we might have a reasonable chance of bringing in from the domestic market?
Our 3 main areas to look at are centre forward (x2), centre midfield (x2), and probably right back.
I have liked the look of Ivanovic at Millwall any time I saw him, he's young, has undoubted quality & will only get better.
Wouter Burger from Stoke would be a decent shout for our midfield & looks like he wants to get out. He has played at a high level in Europe before, so may well be suited to a PL style.
If Sheffield United don't go up, & if they are under pressure to reduce their budget further, de Souza Costa is a smashing player, but who will undoubtedly have interest from the PL.
As for right back, Jimmy Dunne at QPR made the Championship team of the year, despite being in a poor side; maybe a relatively affordable option to test out during the year?

Absolutely no idea. I’m pretty sure that the club will know who they have in mind and have probably tested the water behind the scenes with both players and clubs. I can see a very busy summer but with clear targets in mind with little messing about.

Sorry, didn’t answer your question.

The question I would have is given if say as we hope Axel and Burgess sign on and assuming Mass and Baggot don’t we’ll have next season 27 over 21 players.

To get 10 in 12 have to be shipped out. There’s some obvious names in Slicker who needs a loan, Ali who’s not good enough and Delap who’s barring a miracle certain to be sold, but that still leaves a lot of exits that aren’t obvious and certain.

Hard to see where you fit 10+ bodies. Removing the loanees that go back to their clubs, we have 25 on the books. I don't think any are under 21 next season. We then have to potentially add back in some coming back from loan (Clarke, Humphries, ...)

I'd say 10+ is never going to happen, and would be a potential disaster. IMO a maximum of 5 incoming, to tweak the squad (excluding fringe/development acquisitions).

Impossible to say who right now, until we know who definitely leaves, and what positions we need to replace.

If we're well placed come January, I see that as being a critical Window.

Cant think of targets but for me - LB if Leif leaves. Couple of CMs to replace Phillips (lol) and Cajuste, Striker to replace Delap will be bare minimum needed.

I think we need:

1xST (battling Hirst to start, with Al-Hamadi third choice)
2xCM (ideally both for the starting 11 but battling Morsy for those spots)
1xRW (possibly on loan, wouldn't mind someone like Jackson as something of a backup in case Burns and Ogbene struggle for fitness)

plus replacements for O'Shea, Burgess, Tuanzebe, Davis and Hutchinson if they are to leave.

Ideally, I think our squad is:

2 GKs: one will leave out of Muric, Walton, Palmer. I would guess that is Walton.
4 CBs: Woolfenden and Greaves, ideally Burgess and O'Shea but 2 new players if not.
3 RBs: Johnson, Clarke and ideally Tuanzebe but a new signing if not. Johnson may even be able to be the starting right-back if Tuanzebe leaves.
2 LBs: Townsend as backup, Davis to start, new signing if Davis leaves.
5 CMs: Morsy and two new players battling to start, Taylor fourth choice, Humphreys fifth choice. I would prefer Luongo over Taylor but I don't think that will happen.
3 RWs: Burns or Ogbene ideal starters but someone new as a backup due to their injuries.
3 CAMs: Chaplin, Szmodics and Hutchinson. If Hutchinson leaves, maybe the new signing could be someone who can play CAM or RW.
3 LWs: Clarke, Philogene and Broadhead. I fear that Broadhead might be sold and a replacement signed, but I hope not. I would expect Harness to be released.
3 STs: Hirst and a new player battling to start, Al-Hamadi as third choice. No chance Delap stays.

That is a 28-man squad, if anything too large.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

At least one and probs two GKs will go
Phillips Godfrey Enciso and Cajuste will go
Delap gone
Omari gone
Morsy almost certainly heading east
Burgess going to Spain
Luongo will go
Taylor proven not good enough
Al Hamadi same
Axel gone
Plenty of interest in Johnson and O’Shea and probs Hirst
Don’t see Humph and Baggott being good enough

A lot of speculation in there until any have moved on. Some are near certainties, sure, but many are still very much unknowns.

We still have to work within a squad of 25, so the likes of Clark, Ali, Humphries, Baggott, etc aren't in the currently numbers. Of those you list as gone (ignoring our loanees - but I already removed those from our squad size), I suspect only half that will actually be gone come September.

Nobody knows who is off I would imagine if Delap gets offered north of a hundred thousand a week he will def leave I think more movement than 5 in at least 7 or 8 with loans which is normal now.

This imo is a good summary.

Harness may end up at Derby for a fee. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ali go to Stoke. I see these as fringe, so not part of the squad next season. Clark to go back out on loan IF Axel signed a new contract.

I'm not sure of the players, but I'd imagine we use the loan market extensively this summer, as with the money we have it is basically a 'cheat code' for the Championship.

We need permanent signings too, but I'd be astonished if we don't get 3 or 4 very very good quality loan signings.

And 21 left - they were in financial distress on relegation, with a 65M debt to service. A very different situation to what we are in right now.

The club needs to go into this window with the mindset who can cope with the PL are who couldnt, some weve loved just couldnt, think we focus too much on the 25 man squad with sales/loans we will be under 25, but we have also looking at delap omari jayden done well going to PL acadamies to improve and they wont feature in a 25 man squad, knowing we have 5 loan spots for loan to buys meaning there will be little outlay this season either win/win

I agree, I think this is the summer we need to throw a few darts at the international market in the hope that one or two stick.

Domestically, I'd go for these three:

Hayden Hackney – CM, 22. Really durable and a bit of a do-it-all midfielder in the mould of Jens. The big question is around Porto’s interest and whether we'd be willing to do a deal in the £10–15m range.

Will Osula – ST, 21. Played 12 times this season. Pace, power, and in the mould of Delap and Hirst. The question is whether we’d look to loan or buy. You’d think, with Callum Wilson now 33 and frequently injured, they'll need to bring in another elite forward with the Champions League looming. Will Osula be happy as third-choice again?

Tom Fellows – RW, 21. Another really durable, powerful wide option in the mould of Burns or Ogbene. Chieo will be 29 when the season starts, Wes will be 31 in November. Will either be fit to start the season? Will their injuries impact their pace and power? Will KMc be happy rotating Philogene, Omari and Johnson?

I think all three would cost in the region of £10–15m, so not cheap, but they would improve us next season and potentially benefit us in future years.

I do think a key tool for us next year may be the use of loan to buy depending on promotion. As much as it has hindered us slightly with Jens it helps us build for the future attracting a better quality of player whilst in the Champ.

Possibly for Osula given they signed him for 10 rising to 15 but for the other two that would be steep.

Porto bid 10M for Hackney in Jan and in an era of constant comms/ information clubs very rarely publicly underbid without having some kind of prior knowledge of thee fee a club is looking for.

I'm not sure Fellowes would fetch the same as Jack Clarke/ Hutchinson would he? He's still just got 8 goals to his name in two years staring in the championship. Clarke had 24 in 10 games more and went for 15 rising to 20.

It will be what they want but is it reality? probably not
