MIDFIELD 06:56 - May 17 with 1887 viewsmuccletonjoe

The success of next season depends upon the recruitment to the centre of the team.
Maybe Morsy can continue as lynch pin , although at a lower level of influence than our last season in the championship. Humphreys will be returning and his improvement will need to be assessed. Taylor has convinced very few so far that he has the consistency to hold down a permanent place.
So that leaves us shopping in the midfield department for at least 2 excellent additions who would tip the promotion scales in our favour.

I know you know this-

The success of next season depends on all the recruitment (players get injured) and all the players and coaching clicking into place and relentlessly pursuing points week after week after week Aug to May. It’s a attritional squad game in the champ!

We’ve been here before.

We need two midfield beasts who have physical presence which is what will be needed if we get back to the corrupt league again.

As for comment about injuries, we need to make sure we are not signing more crocks, many of our recant signings seem to be injured a lot.

Yes having been saying this for weeks, possibly months. Whilst perhaps the need to have a midfield as dynamic as many in the Premier League may not be required we are nonetheless very short and weak in this area.
But I suppose is we have ambitions to be back in the Prem again after next season then the foundations need putting in place and a bit of a rethink as to what is required to not only get back up but to stay there.

If we start with morsy or Taylor we aren't doing much next season,
Only if we're waiting for a late premiership player il accept one of them starting,

Need to get Flynn back.

Feel we need either a midfielder that is going to contribute by scoring goals or assisting.

So either a box to box late arriving midfielder (Tommy Miller esque) or a playmaker style midfielder (Magilton esque).

Atm we have hard working good solid midfielders but they just lack that extra quality in the final third

Poll: Mick in or out? (not a dig at Mick just want to see the overall opinion on here)

But we don't really play with a box to box midfielder. If this season our playing style is the same as when we got promoted then we have an array of attacking midfielders/ Leif spending most of the game in the oppo half.

We need 2 sitting defensive midfielders for that role. It's why Taylor just never seems to fit our style of play.

That would require a complete change of formation. The current set up with 4 out and out attackers and a couple of bombing on full backs would get obliterated with one holding midfielder bombing on too. It was weak as a two this season, let alone having basically one in there.
Maybe we do need to mix it up a bit formation wise, but can't see McKenna straying too far from what's worked so far, not in huge steps anyway. Maybe a slightly more traditional shape defensively, if Lief goes, would allow for a bit more room and a tweak. We'll see.

I had a Quick Look at fotmob data to see teams with similar structure and teams with players in the double pivot typically don’t contribute a lot of goals, a few exceptions like Fernandez and a ManCity midfield. We do however need far more athleticism in that space to help cover more attacking players and ensure we are not easy to counter like early in the season where we were a bit more adventurous.

We need goals and lots of them from our Striker plus forward players. If defenders and midfield contribute that a bonus.

I'd get Tom Cairney, but it seems he may be off to Wrexham.

A 34 year old on a huge wage at the end of his career way is not the answer for us.

Guys like Downes, Burger, Morton, Hackney etc will be the type of player we’re are looking at I assume.

At one point it was rumoured that we were interested in Nemanja Matić, but I suppose that was when we thought we may be staying in the Premier League.

Agree re: Taylor, we need two physical beasts to break up the play, protect the back four and get the ball to an attacker. Chipping in with 7/8 goals would be a bonus too.

Nope, was related to this season just finishing. Was some months ago though. no doubt due to the McKenna link

And who can play forward, driving the ball forward ideally

I know McKenna likes his midfield two to sit deep and compact at times but we could do with someone able to break lines, Cajuste does it occasionally

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

The box to box midfielder no longer exists, kind of tells you all you need to know about that post tbf.
