Same. Leicester want a love in for Vardy that's their business (and am sure would have done the same in their shoes) - but to have a guard of honour mid game? Could have done it as he came on instead without actually stopping a game ffs. That said - the post traffic was a breeze- some contrast to last season when it was a right old bunfight getting out of town.

Fans who clapped Vardy’s goal & clapped him off on 23:59 - May 18 by tractorshark | Yep I noticed the Everton fans applauding Enciso’s goal the other week. I think it’s probably a generational thing, it was quite a common occurrence in days gone by. Each to their own, I suppose. As a young fan, I probably would have got the hump about it. Now I’m older, I’m a bit more chilled out. Ipswich fans do have a fairly likeable and respectful reputation among most opposition fanbases so I’m not overly surprised some clapped. Vardy divides opinion but his career is remarkable. He probably wouldn’t have celebrated in front of us had we not given him stick but who knows. And it wouldn’t have happened had the match held more importance. I’d argue a far worse show of support was people leaving after the second goal as the group in front of me did today. And the guy at the top of the stairs giving the finger to the team and telling them to eff off as they came over after the final whistle. But, like I say, each to their own and it’s up to them what they do. It’s an emotional game, it’s been a frustrating season and people react in different ways. |
I saw that too, but think it may have been more in recognition of what an incredible goal it was, not because we scored it.
Fans who clapped Vardy’s goal & clapped him off on 08:44 - May 19 with 749 views | baxterbasics | I can just about give a reluctant pass to clapping him off at the end given it's the close of a remarkable career with Leicester. But there was nothing about the goal worthy of applause. Opposition goals need to be something special to deserve that, a rare gem you feel lucky to have witnessed regardless of who hit it.

I did Bobby Robson when he returned as manager of Newcastle in 2001 and Brian Clough when he walked out for his last game (god, he looked ill), but they’re the exceptions for obvious reasons.

Fans who clapped Vardy’s goal & clapped him off on 21:21 - May 18 by DJR | What was more embarrassing from my point of view was the loud chanting early in the game aimed at Vardy's wife. It seemed distasteful to me on a day when the entire Leicester crowd had been given flags with Vardy's name on it, and even mores so when aimed at his wife. I said to my mates that we would regret it, and indeed we did. Vardy clearly heard the chanting and showed his contempt when he celebrated in front of our fans. [Post edited 18 May 21:51]

You do realise EVERY fanbase has chanted that to Vardy in every game he's played since all that stuff happened, right? Ipswich fans didn't just turn up and make that up yesterday. He is a player that thrives off that sort of stuff though so it probably would've been better just to ignore him completely

It was his last home game for Leicester, and all the Leicester fans were given a flag to commemorate it, so I thought it lacked class to do it in such a game. And another point is that it appeared to fire him up, which was counter-productive. You can see that from the photo of his goal celebration on the TWTD homepage where the anger shines through. Indeed, he said after the game "Obviously getting the dogs' abuse from the away fans, there was only one place where I was going." As the saying goes, he had the last laugh. [Post edited 19 May 9:01]

I would’ve been surprised had they not done it, it’s happened a few times before. RE: Clapping him, at the end of the day we’re football fans as well as ITFC fans and I’ve enjoyed watching Vardy over the years especially in their title winning season, FA Cup win and Champions League participation so did join in with the applause as he came off albeit sparingly, as were a few others, no one was proper going for it with the clapping.

Fans who clapped Vardy’s goal & clapped him off on 07:14 - May 19 by DJR | One thing that was noticeable yesterday was that many of our fans had left before the McKenna and the players came over. That hadn't been the case at any previous away game I've attended this season, and I've only missed two. [Post edited 19 May 7:14]

Because our away performances haven’t been that bad really, yesterday was probably one of the worst and really the only thing wrong was we couldn’t score. Loads left early at West Ham though.

Each to their own and I respect everyone's opinion on this. I was as disappointed in the performance/outcome as anyone yesterday but in any other sport but football you'd likely clap those achievements. He has had a remarkable career at Leicester and I really rate his arrogance and gobby chav nature - its a dying breed of footballer and it adds to the game. I said to my mate when I clapped along with a minority of others 'we'll be tarnished as the woke brigade for this' but I didn't want to let that affect my personal view on the matter. Each to their own but I try not to get too embroiled in the depth of feeling and anger in football if I can help it. My family were also sat a row in front of his last summer on a flight to Bodrum and him and Rebekah couldn't have been nicer and more engaging with my 6 month old son when they could have just ignored us and put their headphones in. So I have personal reason to rate him is a bloke too. Down votes incoming.

Fans who clapped Vardy’s goal & clapped him off on 07:08 - May 19 by bluesym | Sorry, but I really can't get on board with this type of thinking. Of course the season has been over for a while, but I've still been going in the hope I'll see Town show some fight and belief, maybe even a clean sheet! I Can't see that losing every game until the end the season does us any favours at all.I was there yesterday and the clapping of Vardy from a section of Town fans made my toes curl to be honest. |
I don't think there's been any suggestion Town weren't showing fight and belief, just that it's difficult to get as invested in games when there's nothing riding on them. I remember the 'relebrations' at Sheffield Wednesday on the final day we'd already been relegated in 1995.

Seemed like the referee wasn't taking the game seriously. One thing for fans not to see it as the most intense encounter but another for the referee to get involved.

West Ham was definitely the worst example. Loads in the bottom tier walked out at 4-1 and that was 20 minutes to go. It’s happened at every away game when we’ve been losing bar Newcastle (and I’ve only missed two) but yesterday was more noticeable again. One group behind me moaned about the Vardy applause but then they left 10 minutes early which probably grates on me more than something that was most likely meant as a small show of respect. Personally, I don’t leave early because football costs a fortune and I always feel you might miss something incredible like a 2-goal comeback in injury time. But as I’ve been told on here before, it’s up to the individual what they want to do. And that applies here. I do agree with the posters who questioned why we wound up Vardy in the first place. I doubt it inspired him any more but it was fairly unoriginal and he certainly had the last laugh. My mate is a Leicester season ticket holder and he said their fans were disappointed with our chanting but not surprised. I suppose we’d probably say the same if a legend like John Wark was leaving nowadays. [Post edited 19 May 9:59]

How Luke Thomas didn’t get a yellow card I don’t know. Multiple fouls. Second Premier League game for the ref, another hopeless one that’s been promoted.

I thought he was going to get sent off at some point, looked totally out of his depth against Omari and Axel just brushed him aside. I noted before the game that it was only the referee's second match at this level. Thought the game in general had a Championship feel to it.

Fully agree. Couldn't believe how unwilling he was to dish out any cards and you could see it meant Leicester players were taking more and more chances with their tackles. Could have been quite dangerous on another day. And even the timewasting their side didn't get any real management. I'm all for letting the game flow and keeping card volumes down but you've still got to keep players in check.

100% agree. Nobody wants to see cards being waved every 5 mins or soft yellows like Tuanzebe at Villa or Johnson at Newcastle. But yesterday was ridiculous. The 33 could have been off on another day. And that’s where the inconsistency of refs in the Premier League drives me up the wall. Next week those two challenges will most likely end up with a red card.

I wanted us to win yesterday as much as any game this season,so was invested in the game. Would have been great to win yesterday, and finish above them in the league (small victories i know!) I don't mind Leicester doing their thing and celebrating Vardys career, but I'd have liked nothing more than to be the party poopers. [Post edited 19 May 10:46]

I don't disagree with any of that, but I still feel I can't feel as invested or care as much about games which have nothing competitive riding on them as matches when the season is still in play, so to speak.

I thought his challenge on Omari in the first half that left him injured was a straightforward forward yellow, and would have been had that challenge been made by any of our players in previous matches. The fact that he then didn’t book him in the second half when Omari skinned him and he took him out heading towards the penalty area, making no attempt to play the ball, just beggars belief.

I clapped Chris Gayle when he scored his 10,000th run for the West Indies against England in a demolition. As did every others England cricket fan there that day. I appreciate there’s a slight difference in importance of a run vs a goal but I just don’t have any issues with recognising sporting achievements of others whilst still supporting my team. That's the thing isn't it. He has no allegiance to us at all. It would be slightly more bearable if he was retiring, but he isn't even doing that, just getting himself a nice pay day on a free transfer to someone else.

If it had anything significant riding on it from a competitive angle, I doubt anyone would have applauded. |
Disagree and disappointed with your view about not being invested in any game since relegation. Finishing above them is important from a pride (and financial) pov. It matters. We've been the better team and should really want the league table to reflect that. Yesterday felt like a new low and applauding that little gremlin only adds to that. [Post edited 19 May 10:52]
