We get to reset our relationship with the EU to something more sensible and Gary Lineker leaves the BBC - something for everyone, left and right.

A day of love and peace for all Twtdrs :-)

And I get to go to a neighbour’s funeral. Funny old day.

On the upside, I’ve always detested Lineker and glad to see the back of him. The EU? I hope it’s a sensible arrangement. I don’t see how it can be worse than the current situation.

Richard Tice was on this morning saying we must not give away any of the hard won benefits of Brexit.

Yesterday saw Romania choose the liberal candidate over the far-right candidate for President as well.

Perhaps Tice would like to explain the benefits of Brexit if he can stop his eyes swivelling long enough. Shouldn't take long.

Actually, just one benefit would do. Anything. Something. Just a crumb.

Looks like we have made concessions on Fishing but no agreement, apart from agreeing to continue talks, on youth mobility which is a shame,

Can only see Reform gaining from this, just gives them more ammunition and they'll say Labour caving into the EU. Right wing press will go into a frenzy.

Poll: How long will we be in League One/League Two from next season?

A few observations.

1. Virtually half of Alicante airport has been separated off for flights to the UK, and there are a vast number of e-gates for non-EU nationals (overwhelmingly British), with only one for the relatively small number of EU nationals flying to the UK. Great queues form frequently, with the EU nationals getting much quicker access. If what is reported is correct, EU nationals will be delayed a lot, and will only add to the queues the Brits are in. Not sure that is a win-win.

2. Peter Foster of the FT said he envisaged a youth mobility scheme (if it ever emerges) being very miserly in terms of numbers. But given even that will be jumped on politically, he asked why not just go for something much more ambitious?

3. There appears to be a case of the tail wagging the dog because the latest polling suggest only 30% of people now think it was right to leave the EU.

Looks like Labour are no different to the Tories when it comes to the devolved regions.

Scottish government complains about not being consulted over deal with EU on fishing

Angus Robertson, cabinet secretary for constitution, external affairs and culture in the SNP Scottish government, has posted this on social media about the fishing aspect of the EU-UK deal

"UK Govt has agreed a fisheries (devolved) deal with EU in principle, without any recourse, involvement or approval of Devolved Admins. Scottish Government received no documentation or draft proposals in advance. I asked UK minister last week for this. Nothing received. Reset?"

Meet the new control freaks, same as the old control freaks?

Alternatively ever since 2016 the two main parties have been scared of Reform and trying to play them at their own game.

Now it’s time for Labour to say that currently Brexit isn’t working and we need a much better working relationship with the biggest market on the planet.

Come out fighting and tell everyone why it’s a great deal and challenge Reform and the Reform Lite Tories what they would do.

from what I can see, we have signed away our fishing rights for 12 years. As usual we have been out-negotiated as the original area we were looking to concede was 1-3 years up to a max of 5. What we are getting is a closer working relationship (it wasn't particularly close when we were in the E.U so how will that work will be interesting). And talks about co-operation in a lot of the areas covering security, defence, health and food security, youth mobility; stuff which is mutually beneficient to both parties anyway. The only solid gain is use of e-gates when travelling which is okay if you are a frequent traveller. It will certainly help at pinch points like the Channel tunnel. Not much is fleshed out in detail. As it benefits the French fishermen massively , Macron will be trumpeting it loudly.

tbf, you mentioned the tail wagging the dog in a previous post, which would feel like an apt description for Scottish fishing concerns kiboshing a wider deal. No wonder they weren't consulted - the SNP would have sounded off safe in the knowledge that they didn't have to look at the wider picture (even as it applies to them in non-fishing respects).

Anyway, the Telegraph is fun today - fury & outrage all over

I think that's a bit unfair on the SNP who never wanted Brexit in the first place.

As regards the Telegraph, it's been like that since Labour (far from radical leftists) came to power.

EDIT: I came across this recent statement from the SNP.

The party’s Europe spokesman Stephen Gethins said: “Returning to the EU and returning to the single market and customs union should have been at the very top of the agenda at this EU-UK summit.

“After almost a decade of damage and decline in broken Brexit Britain – there are no ifs, buts or maybes about this – there will never be a better deal than being back in the EU.

“It is the biggest and the best growth strategy available and yet it is the only option the Labour Party have turned their face against – all because they are running scared of Nigel Farage.”

Yeah, maybe I'm being unfair, but with the SNP, I can't help but be a little suspect. Maybe that just goes for all politicians.

I've seen similar quotes from them today to yours, but if being back in the EU is the best and only sensible option, that would have almost certainly have had a similar or worse impact on Scottish fishing in any case.

But I wonder if it would, given all the seafood sent to places like Spain, something that has been made much more difficult.

As it is, our own waters don't in the main produce the sort of seafood (eg cod) that the British eat.

Fair point - I'd read before today that exporting Seafood might be easier in this deal, but I can't see any mention of whether that actually happened, so I assume not.

Is this deal with the EU likely a 'first step' towards something further amounting to 'freedom of movement' in the short term (next few years)?

I wouldn’t be surprised - I do think that ‘freedom of movement’ will be the next step if Labour or a more moderate Conservative administration win power at the next election.

And I think over time instead of being ‘half out’ within the EU the UK will be ‘half in’ outside of the EU. In the single market and in free movement but not actually in the EU.

I do think that the overwhelming majority of people will accept that.

When you think about it, it’s ludicrous that that didn’t happen in the first place but instead wasted billions with a ‘blue, white and red’ Brexit.
