Buying a vehicle long distance 10:37 - May 19 with 925 viewsDorchesterBlue

Anybody had experience of buying a vehicle from a garage long distance?
I have paid a deposit on credit card and due to meet the seller halfway with the vehicle tomorrow, however he wants a full bank transfer today so it’s all cleared ready for tomorrow. If I don’t like he said would transfer money back (hmmmm)
Obviously as a novice on this I’m a little hesitant as only seen it in video and pictures.
Seems a big reliable garage and good reviews in their area but don’t want to be scammed
Any thoughts?

We once bought a vehicle from a garage in Scotland because a local garage that was sourcing a vehicle for us sent the details of it to us.

Unfortunately as my wife fell in love with it she then traced it online to the garage in Scotland.

Unfortunately it turned out to be a badly repaired accident car and coming from Scotland was used to shiity weather and was not the best purchase I have ever made.

Needless to say I am now responsible for buying crap cars.

In respect of your question it can only take 2 hours to transfer funds so I personally would not do the full amount.

You *should* have the distance selling regulations on your side, but double-check that they apply to these precise circumstances.

We bought a Volvo a couple of years back. Test-drove locally but couldn't find the spec we wanted, so ended up buying from a garage down south somewhere without having seen the vehicle, and had it delivered to us.

All was fine, but because we didn't set foot on the premises and concluded the contract at distance, we had two weeks grace to test the vehicle, with the upshot that we could reject it for any or no reason whatsoever, in return for a full refund.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

My advice, do not pay anything in advance beyond a deposit - any reputable garage would not expect payment in advance of seeing the vehicle.

I bought a Volvo from York (I live in Nottingham) right at the end of lockdown and had a similar experience. I bought the car over the phone/email but went to collect it. I was pleased I did because I spotted a nick on the bonnet which they were able to touch up before I took it away. Unless it was a new car, I think I'd always invest the time in going to the dealer.
It worked out well - although I have always regretted not spotting that it didn't have a reversing camera which I would have realised if I'd test driven it.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I can't think of one reason why you should need to pay in full, and I hope you only paid a minimal deposit to cover the sellers time/efforts in meeting with you./ This doesn't sound right/normal in any way. You only pay once you have seen and agreed to make the purchase. (I have a family member who lost £15K in a similar long distance sale - the car never materialised) If it doesn't seem right, it probably isn't right. Good Luck.

I can see both sides here. With the example I mentioned above, I transferred the money to the dealer the day before delivery. Similarly, I would imagine that the big home delivery dealers such as Cinch and Kazoo would also demand payment before delivery.

The only slightly weird element here is the meeting in the middle bit - I'd have expected them to do home delivery if they can take the vehicle half way.

Is it an independent or main dealer? I suspect the former. Personally, unless it was brand new, I’d want to see the car and drive it before handing over more than a holding fee. Videos and pic will tell you a lot but not everything.

After buying a house, car buying is probably the next biggest purchase you’ll make so be careful. If it cost me public transport costs, a Premier Inn to do that, I’d write it off as part of the cost.

Back in the 70's I bought Len Fairclough's old Mk1 Escort, which had 102,000 miles on the clock. I was lucky, it gave me 10 years of repair-free reliable motoring.

A bank transfer will go through immediately. He's talking bollox if he's saying it takes a day or so for the cash to go through.

I wouldn't have even paid a deposit for a motor I'd never laid eyes on. Do not pay a penny more until you've seen the car and are happy with it.

Most bank transfers take minutes to send and at most, 2 hours.

I'd be reluctant to pay anymore until i've seen the car etc. in person.

I'm presuming its a not readily available car anywhere else? I'm naturally cautious so i'd not be paying him anymore.

Opinion based on a purchase I made by bank transfer in 2017

Under £10,000 goes thru instantaneously, over £10,000 there can be a delay. I bought a car for @£12,000 and did it 2 transfers of £9,000 and £3,000, trader had his lap top, we both looked at screen as his logged in, could see payments received.

40 years in Trading Standards says never hand over money before you see the car.
This applies to buying from a garage or even more to a private sale.

Sorry.

I’ve bought long distance a few times, but always go to them and finalise the deal there once I’ve seen the car. Depends what you’re paying. If it’s expensive for you and not just an d banger, I would want to see it before agreeing to pay. Paying up front rings alarm bells for me.
