Restaurant/pub restaurant recommendations 15:54 - May 22 with 2597 viewsthebooks

Thinking of eating out tonight.

Know the regulars: Greyhound, Fountain, Swan etc. Would like to try somewhere new in or just outside the town. Don’t mind what type of food, as long as it’s good.

Any recommendations? Ta!

Not sure if it meets the definition of 'just outside town' but the Maybush at Waldringfield must be in the top 20 pubs in England.

Venue 16, reliably excellent. On Tuddenham Road just on the outskirts of Ipswich.

Yes, but it is good, not to hard to get to and has a car park! I should know given it’s my ‘local’ 15 mins walk away when staying in Suffolk and having been going there since the late 80s.

You could try The Bewildered Kestral - a fine eating establishment in Burgh, run by Eileen Derbyshire and Amanda Barrie

Tbf, I think deben inns get a lot right. Decent pub food, in well presented lovely pubs in great locations.

They’re a very good operator to be fair. And the location of the Maybush is beautiful.

I can’t claim to have been to every pub in the country but for me top 20 isn’t a wild shout.

The George, Norton St Philip, Somerset is a top 5 without doubt. Absolutely unreal place and the views out the back are ridiculous. London has a few corkers to be fair.

I like a view.

Certainly can't claim to have visited every pub in the country or even in the Good Beer Guide, though I know people who have.

I wouldn't put it in my top 20 pubs, and I like Deben Inns, like the food, like the Maybush, used to spend many Friday/Saturday nights down there in summers of years gone by, and the beer is usually fine too.

It's just I think there's loads more pubs that rank higher.

Even only if you judge Suffolk.

No, Doris Speed and Arthur Leslie sold it back in 79. Geoffrey Hughes and Bernard Youens were very dismayed.

Bit late now but the Shannon at Bucklesham won't ever let you down and for a bonus point it isn't a Deben Inn!

Not sure what the food is like but it really is a fantastic setting isn't it.

The landlord back in the early 2000's was a customer of ours, he was the spit of Joe Bugner.

I have no idea. I still don't understand how or why Ed Sheeran is famous.

Thought so, a couple of years ago, an ex randomly put that on one night and there it was, the river Deben! Which felt rather bizarre at the time as I had no idea the film was ever made. So much Suffolk.
