But our wage bill was the lowest in the premier league by a substantial margin. That is why we were missing the quality to stay up.

It's not impossible to overachieve whilst keeping the wages down, Brentford, Bournemouth and Wolves (in the end) managed it this year, but by and large the bigger the wages the better your chances.

We were 7 million behind the next lowest wage payers and 70 million behind Spurs in the much desired 17th spot.

We would have the lowest wage bill but those numbers are speculative drivel.

The data comes from capology who are well respected with regard to the accuracy of their information. Some of it will be estimated but it won't be far off.

Yes, thee will be some (educated) speculation ofc. Previous year's accounts will give a basis to build on. Although not precise, the order of magnitude and relative position for each will likely be in the right ball park.

This also helps with our PSR vs Southampton and Leicester next season. Both are likely to need to fund a fundamentally higher wage structure through player sales.

If their data is anywhere near accurate it just goes to show how much Brentford are spectacularly over achieving. Credit to them.

And thus begins the murky descent into what exactly is a "wage" defined as ?

Is it just standard pay packet ? Is it including bonuses? Is it including seniority extras like for being a foundation ambassador, being captain. Does it include extras like pension, health insurance, free merchandise, free tickets for family, image rights the club pay for, additional personal sponsors from boot makers, or even just the good old sponsor a player ? Win bonuses ? Goal bonuses, clean sheet bonuses

HR companies talk alot thesedays in terms of an overall package as being the wage, because it means you can pay less salary, but claim renumeration is higher

Football clubs are incentivised to present numbers that reflect the best financial setup for financial fair play reasons. Man City being the prime example. Not necessarily the reality so I don't doubt any club in that list would claim it's wildly inaccurate and then never bother to correct the record.

It might be 99.9% accurate and clubs would still deny it

I think this is the thing people forget when they talk about our spending. Yes our net spend was high but we had the lowest value squad in the league even after spending that money and the lowest wage bill too. We had so much catching up to do, with hindsight too much to do in one summer window much as we were hopeful we might pull it off.

Yes they did a poor job of the real Championship order last season and in previous years. I would place very little faith in their accuracy for teams like us.*

*In terms of ballpark numbers. I'm sure we're mostly predicting our wage bill to have been the lowest in the league. I very much hope it was!

KM said that after the last game - effectively we were underdogs in every game we played last season on this basis, and therefore the base case is that we should not have got a point (OK, the last bit I added)

I saw that, and its a relevant point. You need a good big quLity squad.

20 premiership players.

We had 5.

Erm - isn't that our wage bill from last season's accounts ... in the Championship?

Actually, looking at the figures in the Annual Report, it's lower than the number given there. I doubt our wages have gone down since last season.

They’re not directly comparable. One is the estimated player wages, the other is for all 300 company employees. There is also £15M in the accounts for promotion bonuses, which won’t be in the next accounts.

This would put player wages before bonuses for 23/24 around £20m
